The 80W PSU PSM80 that comes with the HCZ-5.1 generates a modest amount of heat and thus requires ventilation.

Do not place it on a rug or other soft surface into which it could sink.

Do not allow papers or cloth to obstruct the ventilation grille in the top cover.

The PSM80 should not be placed in a built-in installation such as a bookcase or rack unless proper ventilation is provided.

CAUTION: THIS APPARATUS MUST NOT BE EXPOSED TO DRIPPING OR SPLASHING. OBJECTS FILLED WITH LIQUIDS SUCH AS VASES MUST NOT BE PLACED ON THE APPARATUS. THIS APPARATUS IS OF CLASS I CONSTRUCTION AND MUST BE CONNECTED TO A MAINS SOCKET OUTLET WITH A PROTECTIVE EARTHING CONNECTION.

THE POWER CORD MUST BE DISCONNECTED FROM THE REAR OF THE APPARATUS, OR THE WALL SOCKET, TO PROVIDE TOTAL ISOLATION. ONE OR OTHER OF THESE CONNECTIONS MUST BE READILY ACCESSIBLE WHEN THE APPARATUS IS IN USE.

Introduction

Systemline Modular components can be configured to work as a 5.1 Multi-Channel Audio System, utilising the unbalanced analogue outputs of a suitably equipped DVD player.

The system can, therefore, be used to provide multi-channel audio in zone and can also provide a six point stereo experience, when switched to the System input common to all zones.

Overview

IMPORTANT NOTE: This configuration relies on the source equipment having 6 discrete phono 5.1 audio outputs and so a DVD player or AV Amplifier with this kind of output must be used. Systemline Modular is not equipped to decode Dolby Digital or any other system using a single data output socket.

Power is sent to the speakers along the Local CAT5 runs to save on cable but the 50m-length limit must still be obeyed. Two of the active speakers (the RIGHT fRONT and RIGHT SURROUND) are configured as stereo and are paired with a passive speaker and the other two (CENTRE and SUb) are in mono configuration - giving six channels in all.

Equipment Order List

In order to effect this configuration the following modules and associated equipment will be required:

Preparation

(Refer to figure 1). The configuration requires the pulling of only a few extra runs of CAT 5 to the various speaker positions.

Decide on the final positions of the multi-channel speakers. It is desirable to keep the layout broadly symmetrical as outlined in figure 1, but the actual positioning will depend more on the shape of the room and the desired listening/viewing position.

Decide on a position for the 5.1 Termination Plate. This should be close to, if not behind, the cabinet where the DVD player is located. The cabinet may also house the PSM130 power supply module.

The plate will need to be close enough for the window emitter to reach the source equipment. Of course, the source equipment and termination plate need not be in the same room as the speakers and viewing equipment. They could equally well be located remotely in the same place as the other source equipment connected to the hub.

Decide whether the installation requires a keypad or a handset or both for control.

NOTE: In any event it is advisable to have one IR enabled speaker in the set-up, as this will provide status information on the system. All other speakers in the set-up must be non-IR ones.

Systemline Modular 5.1 is best suited to secondary set-ups where convenience and small size are at a premium when compared to overall sound pressure level capabilities. Thus the system is most likely to be installed in smaller rooms in the house such as bedrooms or studies.

Routing the Cable

Once all the positions for the various pieces are known, the holes have been cut in the ceiling and a double gang back box has been provided for the termination plate, it will be necessary to route all of the cabling. During routing make sure that you leave long enough tails on the cables to enable ease of installation once it comes to making punch-down connections.

Route one run of UTP CAT5 cable from the termination plate point to the site of each of the active speakers. This will require just 4 long runs of CAT 5 and they should all be labelled LOCAL with some indication of the signal they carry such as SUb, fRONT L, fRONT R etc...

IMPORTANT NOTE: The maximum length for any one cable run is 50m.

Next it is necessary to run the NEXT ZONE daisy chain cables which will link each active speaker in the set-up. Decide where you want the IR enabled speaker to be located and start there, working around the system in a logical fashion until you reach the last active speaker position.

NOTE: In the diagram, the IR enabled and master speaker is the Centre channel speaker, but it is not essential to choose this one. Some customers may prefer not to see an LED whilst viewing movies, so may wish the IR enabled speaker to be one of the rear speakers. As long as the IR enabled speaker is first in the chain, then it could be any of the four active speakers. If a keypad is employed it must always be connected to this master speaker.

The daisy chain cables will link from NEXT ZONE on the first speaker to SYSTEM on the next and from NEXT ZONE on that speaker to SYSTEM on the following one and so on. The cables should be labelled accordingly.

finally route CAT5 cable from the RIGHT fRONT active speaker position to the LEfT fRONT passive speaker position and from the RIGHT SURROUND active speaker position to the LEfT SURROUND passive speaker position. Label the cables.

If a Keypad is to be included in the set-up then a further cable needs to be routed from the single gang back box in which it will be housed up to the first speaker in the chain which is also the IR enabled one. Label the cable KEYPAD INPUT.

finally, if desired, the 5.1 room can be linked as an ordinary zone to the rest of the Modular system by bringing in a cable from one of the Modular System Hub Zone Outputs. This should be routed to the first speaker in the chain, the one that will be IR enabled and the only one that

will have a spare SYSTEM input. Label the cable SYSTEM HUb.

Making the Connections

Start with the 5.1 Termination Plate. Take each of the 4 LOCAL cables and strip back the outer jacket by about 30mm and separate the coloured conductors. Do not strip back the individual conductors.

Identify the four CAT 5 cable locations from the labelling you have made and match them to the correct positions on the termination plate. The punch-down connectors are colour coded and labelled with the appropriate audio source name.

Offer up each connector one at a time and attach it using a 110-style punch down tool. Take care to route the wire so that it is trimmed on the trimming ledge side of the Katts connector by the action of the tool. Once all the connections have been made the termination plate can be screwed to the

Centre Speaker

Next, start connecting the speakers in the listening room. Start with the IR enabled speaker, which will normally be the CENTRE channel speaker (see note above). for this speaker because it is a mono centre channel an SLM/IR is used. Remove it from its box and make sure that the Mono/Stereo switch is switched to MONO.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Brown connection on the Local input is actually a power output terminal. In order to power up the speakers connect the brown conductor in the LOCAL CAT5 run to pin 4 Brown on the POWER SUPPLY connection on the speaker as shown in Figure 3. Do not connect this brown wire to the LOCAL input pin 8 or place a jumper cable in this position. Leave the Brown connection on the Local input of all speakers completely empty.

Take each of the pre-routed CAT5 cables which should be dangling from the ceiling cutout and terminate them using the punch down tool, referring to the colour coding on the speaker cover. These will include LOCAL CENTRE, and NEXT and may include KEYPAD and SYSTEM HUb. Take your time and refer to the diagram figure 4 below to ensure that you understand exactly where each cable goes. If the pre-routed cables have been correctly labelled this should be a simple task.

Remember to leave the brown conductor in the Local CAT 5 cable extra long, so that it will reach the POWER SUPPLY input pin 4 as shown in the diagram.

Tidy all the cables and then offer the speaker up to the cut-out and install it using the dogleg screws. Make sure that the IR receiver PCb is orientated so that it can be seen from the listening position. fit the grille with the black badge over the IR receiver.

Right Front Speaker

Move on to the next speaker in the chain. In this case it is the RIGHT fRONT speaker. for this we will use the active one out of an ALM2 pair. Make sure that the speaker is set to STEREO operation by flicking the switch on the back.

Take each of the pre-routed CAT5 cables which should be dangling from the ceiling cut-out and terminate them using the punch down tool referring to the colour coding on the speaker cover. These will include LOCAL RIGHT fRONT, SYSTEM, NEXT and LEfT SPEAKER. Take your time and refer to the diagram figure 5 to ensure that you understand exactly where each cable goes. If the pre-routed cables have been correctly labelled this should be a simple task.

Remember to leave the brown core in the LOCAL cable extra long so that it will reach, and refer to the important note above.

Move on to the next speaker in the chain. In this case it is the RIGHT SURROUND speaker. for this we will use the active one out of an ALM2 pair. Make sure that the speaker is set to STEREO operation by flicking the switch on the back.

Take each of the pre-routed CAT5 cables which should be dangling from the ceiling cut-out and terminate them using the punch down tool referring to the colour coding on the speaker cover. These will include LOCAL RIGHT SURR, SYSTEM, NEXT and LEfT SPEAKER. Take your time and refer to the diagram figure 6 to ensure that you understand exactly where each cable goes. If the pre-routed cables have been correctly labelled this should be a simple task.

Tidy all the cables and then offer the speaker up to the cut-out and install it using the dogleg screws. fit the grille with the white badge.

finally, move on to the last speaker in the chain. In this case it is the SUb speaker. for this we will use an SLM. Make sure that the speaker is set to MONO operation by flicking the switch on the back.

NOTE: It is desirable, although not essential, that the speaker to be used as the SUB has a little extra bass boost than normal. For this the speaker is best adjusted in isolation so as not to affect any of the other speakers in the set-up.

The speaker must first be powered up and for this the Zone output from a Hub may be used or it can be attached to a

spare PIM module and power supply. As the speaker is non-IR enabled it will be necessary to attach a keypad. Although the speaker can be adjusted without any audio input it is unwise to do so, as you will not be able to hear the changes that you have made.

Attach a music source via an SIM module to the local input of the SLM. Power up the speaker and start the music playing. Using an RM1 handset via the keypad receiver switch the speaker to local by pressing standby followed by the L button. The green LED will illuminate on the keypad. Press standby and L on the handset at the same time and the keypad’s green LED will flash twice.

The speaker is now in set-up mode and the first parameter will be “turn on volume”. DO NOT ADJUST TURN ON VOLUME; press mute immediately to step to bass adjustment. The green keypad LED will flash twice to confirm this. Now adjust the bass by pressing volume up on the handset twice. This will set the speaker to its highest bass setting. Press mute again and observe the green LED which will flash twice. The speaker is now in treble mode. If desired treble can be cut by pressing volume minus on the handset. Press mute again to step through to “max. volume”. DO NOT ADJUST MAX VOLUME press mute to leave set up mode, the LED will flash and turn red.

Tidy all the cables and then offer the speaker up to the cut-out and install it using the dogleg screws. fit the grille with the white badge.

Next install the two passive speakers. There should be only one CAT5 dangling from each cut-out this should be connected to the single punch-down on each passive speaker.

If a keypad is to be used in the installation it should be installed now.

Final Connections

Once all the CAT5 connections have been made the DVD player can be connected to the termination plate. The termination plate has connection designations that correspond to those on the DVD player and these should be connected using ordinary phono cables. Next attach the window emitter to the IR window on the DVD player and then plug it into the window emitter output on the Termination Plate. Lastly, plug in a PSM80 or PSM130 power supply, and switch it on.

Final Commissioning

back in the listening room the IR Enabled speaker and optional Keypad should have the red LED illuminated. Make sure that program material is playing on the DVD player. A good idea is to use the speaker test tones. Switch on the system using either the keypad or handset and select the Local input. The LED(s) should go Green.

All the speakers being of the same address and all interconnected will come on at once and the program material from the DVD will be heard coming from the speakers. It may be necessary to make fine volume level adjustments but these are best made using the DVD player menus and not by adjusting individual Modular Speaker levels.

Lastly make sure that program material is playing from the main Modular source equipment which is connected to the Hub. Switch the 5.1 system to System using either the handset or the keypad. The source material should play equally from all 6 speakers.

TroubleshootingIf all the equipment used in the installation is serviceable and the instructions above are followed correctly then the system should work without problems. However we have drawn up a few symptoms and their possible causes should you encounter any problems.

SYMPTOM POSSIBLE CAUSE ACTION

Nothing works and the IR Status LED on the Hub is permanently on

• There is a wrong connection somewhere in the system

•Recheck all of you wiring to make sure it conforms with the colour coding

• One or more of the speakers is not powered up

•Check wiring, especially the Local to Power jumper which should be present on all speak-ers

Keypad does not respond • Keypad wired up incorrectly •Check keypad wiring

Only some speakers respond to keypad or handset commands

• Keypad not connected to first link in daisy chain

• IR enabled speaker not first in chain

•Re check wiring and make IR speaker first in chain and attach keypad to this speaker only

One or more of the speak-ers has a red and blue led with the red one blinking continuously

• The power amplifier has gone into thermal overload either because of a short in the passive speaker cable or due to a very high input signal being applied. Sometimes this is caused when “hot plugging” modular compo-nents with the power switched on.

•Power down the entire system. Check for shorts or wrong con-nections. Power back up.

Most of the speakers work but one or more of them has no sound com-ing out

• “Next” to “System” daisy chain faulty

•Check that the wiring is correct Make sure you have wired from Next Zone to System and not Next Zone to Next Zone

• One or more speakers may be “out of sync” due to being pow-ered up when connections were still being made

•Try powering down the whole system and then turning back on after a few seconds

No sound from Sub woofer

• Is there any sub-audio in the program material?

• Some DVD players do not test tone the sub.

•Put the DVD into test tone mode to make sure

•Try an action sequence with plenty of boom

• Did the turn on volume get changed during set-up?

•Check by sending Centre channel audio to the sub channel on the termination plate

Sound is too quiet even on full volume

• The output level of the DVD player may be set very low

•Turn up the output level of the DVD player
