AIMSweb Data system

• MiBLSi assignment from Day 3:

– Assess a single grade using AIMSweb measures

• Be ready to assess all students by Spring 2009

– Assessment team (training, integrity checks)

– Logistics (schedule, materials, data entry)

– Using the data

AIMSweb Data Collection

Goal: To collect valid and reliable benchmark data as efficiently and economically as possible, with minimal disruption

How is this working for you?

• Data collection methods

– Teacher

– Assessment teams

• Schedule posted in advance

• One person coordinating flow of students and managing assessment team needs

Page 8: Systems Review: Schoolwide Reading Support Cohort 5: Middle Schools Winter, 2009.

Are you collecting reliable data?

• Has your AIMSweb assessment team (or classroom teachers) been trained?

• Are you running fidelity checks as a team before you test the students?

Page 9: Systems Review: Schoolwide Reading Support Cohort 5: Middle Schools Winter, 2009.

AIMSweb Assessment Team Fidelity check

• AIMSweb data needs to be accurate!

• Check:– Standardized directions

– Timing (e.g. 1 minute)

– Prompting rules

– Scoring rules

– Correct student score entered

• Validate with classroom teacher

Page 10: Systems Review: Schoolwide Reading Support Cohort 5: Middle Schools Winter, 2009.

AIMSweb Fidelity Check Tool

Before every benchmark assessment, run an integrity check with your staff or assessment team

• Briefly review scoring rules and prompts

• Have someone be the student and run through scripts

• Have blank materials available to score

• Discuss your scoring together

• Periodically, have checks on scorers

Page 11: Systems Review: Schoolwide Reading Support Cohort 5: Middle Schools Winter, 2009.

AIMSweb Data entry

• Who is entering AIMSweb data into website?

• Does someone verify the accuracy of those entries?

Sharing AIMSweb data with staff

• Does your staff have ownership of the data?

• People doing the teaching need to be involved in collecting the AIMSweb measures, at some level

– Part of assessment team

– Collecting progress monitoring data

Sharing AIMSweb data with staff

• Which AIMSweb reports are given to your staff?

– Building level (Histograms, Box Plots)

– Grade level (Histograms, Class list reports)

– Individual student (Class list report)

• How is your staff acting on the data?

Planning & Evaluation Tool(Simmons & Kame’enui, 2003)

• The School-Wide Evaluation & Planning Tool (SWEPT) for Middle School Literacy is designed to help schools “take stock” of their strengths and areas of improvement in developing a schoolwide reading plan.

• The items and criteria in the SWEPT represent the “ideal” conditions and total to 100 points.

• Score reflects how you are currently doing as a school in your instructional practices. This tool is designed to assist in your planning and implementation.

Considerations for Implementation

Provide professional development and support to teachers in general education classrooms

to provide classwide interventions.

One Strategy:

REWARDSAnita Archer, Mary Gleason, Vicky Vachon

Page 35: Systems Review: Schoolwide Reading Support Cohort 5: Middle Schools Winter, 2009.

Wide Reading vs. Repeated ReadingWhich is More Effective?

More research is needed in the area of fluency instruction for older students.

Recommendation:Use a combination of repeated reading and wide reading.

Repeated reading provides opportunities for students to improve and automate their sight vocabulary.

Wide reading exposes students to new and different content, vocabulary, and text types.

Page 36: Systems Review: Schoolwide Reading Support Cohort 5: Middle Schools Winter, 2009.

Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies

(PALS) (Douglas and Lynn S. Fuchs)

• Partner Reading (Fluency and Decoding practice)

• Retelling (Comprehension – cognitive monitoring)

• Paragraph Shrinking (Comprehension – summarization)

• Predication Relay (Comprehension – prediction)

www.peerassistedlearningstrategies.net

Page 37: Systems Review: Schoolwide Reading Support Cohort 5: Middle Schools Winter, 2009.

Good News!

• MiBLSi will provide to schools who are interested, a copy of PALS

• However, even if you don’t use the program, the strategies are general strategies that can be used across the content areas to improve fluency and comprehension in all content areas

Page 38: Systems Review: Schoolwide Reading Support Cohort 5: Middle Schools Winter, 2009.

Instructional Routine for Vocabulary

1. Introduce the word

2. Present a student-friendly explanation

3. Illustrate the word with examples

4. Check students’ understanding
