“On the eighth day Jesus came once again into the Upper Room and showed His wounds to Thomas, so that he could touch them as he had wished to, in order to believe and thus become himself a witness to the Resurrection.

To us also, on this Sunday which Saint John Paul II wished to dedicate to Divine Mercy, the Lord shows us, through the Gospel, His wounds. They are wounds of mercy. It is true: the wounds of Jesus are wounds of mercy. ‘With His stripes we are healed’ (Is 53:5).”

“Jesus’ gesture, which raises Lazarus, shows how far the power of God’s grace can go and how far our conversion can go, our change. But listen well ... There is no limit to Divine Mercy offered to all! There is no limit to Divine Mercy offered to all! Remember this well, and we can say it all together: ‘There is no limit to Divine Mercy offered to all!’ Let us say it together ... ‘There is no limit to Divine Mercy offered to all!’ The Lord is always ready to remove the stone from the tomb of our sins, which separate us from Him, from the light of the living.”(Pope Francis at his midday Angelus address, 6 April 2014)

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY (The Feast of Mercy)Saint Faustina’s Diary (Divine Mercy in My Soul), contains at least 14 passages in which Our Lord is quoted as requesting that a ‘Feast of Mercy’ be officially established in the Church. There is a very close link between the meaning of the Divine Mercy Image and the liturgy of the first Sunday after Easter (Divine Mercy Sunday). On that day, the Gospel reading throughout the Church is about the appearance of the Risen Christ in the Upper Room, and about the institution of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The rays of blood and water flowing from the Saviour’s pierced Heart and the wounds on His hands and feet recall the events of Good Friday. “I desire that the first Sunday after Easter be the Feast of Mercy.” (Diary 299) “I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day, the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day, all the divine floodgates through which grace flow are opened.” (Diary 699) “Souls perish in spite of My bitter Passion. I am giving them the last hope of salvation; that is, the Feast of My Mercy.” (Diary 965) The conditions required to receive such a great grace are: to place complete trust in God, to carry out acts of mercy, to be in a state of grace (having received the Sacrament of Confession), and to receive Holy Communion. The preparation for the Feast is to be a novena consisting of the recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet for 9 days, beginning on Good Friday. Jesus said, “By this novena, I will grant every possible grace to souls.” (Diary 796) On Sunday, 30 April 2000, (the canonisation of Saint Faustina and Feast of Divine Mercy), St. John Paul II announced to the world, “It is important that we accept the whole message that comes to us from the word of God on this Second Sunday of Easter (first Sunday after Easter), which from now on throughout the Church will be called ‘Divine Mercy Sunday’ ”. To ensure that the faithful would observe this day with intense devotion, on 13 June, 2002, St. John Paul II established that this Sunday be enriched by a plenary indulgence. (See our ‘Vatican Grants Plenary Indulgence for Divine Mercy Sunday’ leaflet for more information. (Ref: L-PIDM)) On 7 April, 2013, Pope Francis stated, “Today is Divine Mercy Sunday, by the will of Blessed John Paul II, who closed his eyes to the world on the vigil of this [feast day] ... Let us be enveloped by the mercy of God; let us trust in His patience, which always gives us more time ... What a beautiful truth of faith this is for our lives: the mercy of God!”

Pope John Paul II, The Great Mercy Pope, was canonised on Divine Mercy Sunday, 27 April 2014.

How to Prepare for the Feast of MercyTo observe Divine Mercy Sunday fittingly, we should precede the feast by a nine-day novena of chaplets to the Divine Mercy, beginning on Good Friday (privately said) and:1. Celebrate the Feast on the first Sunday after Easter;2. Sincerely repent of all our sins;3. Place our complete trust in Jesus;4. Go to Confession on that Sunday or within seven days before or after the Feast;5. Receive Holy Communion on the day of the Feast;6. Venerate* the Image of The Divine Mercy;7. Be merciful to others, through our actions, words and prayers on their behalf.* To venerate a sacred image or statue simply means to perform some act or make some gesture of deep religious respect toward it because of the person whom it represents - in this case, our most Merciful Saviour.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation - Encountering the Mercy of GodOur Lord told Saint Faustina, “Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet” . . . “When you approach the confessional, know this, that I myself am waiting there for you. I am only hidden by the priest, but I myself act in your soul. Here the misery of the soul meets the God of Mercy.” (Diary 699, 1602) To receive graces and mercy is the heart of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We come to the “Tribunal of Mercy,” not to be judged, but to receive mercy. In preparing for this encounter with Christ we need to call upon the Holy Spirit, asking Him to show us our sins and to “convict” us of our sins (See John 16:8). Why does the Holy Spirit convict us of sin? To make us feel guilty? No. The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin so that we can see ourselves as we really are, recognising the depth of our sinfulness, our weakness and our need for God’s mercy. As we allow the Holy Spirit to do this, we discover what sin is. Sin is simply a turning away from God. It doesn’t change God or diminish His love for us. It separates us from Him. All we have to do is simply come back into God’s presence by going to Confession. Having revealed to us the ways in which we have turned away from God, the Holy Spirit now invites us to turn back. This turning back is called ‘repentance’. In the confessional, aware of our sinfulness, we turn back to God through His representative, the priest, as we really are. Nothing hidden, no excuses, fully exposed to the view of God. In our sinfulness, we ask for forgiveness. In our sickness, we ask for healing. In our weakness, we ask for strength. In our misery, we ask for mercy. We stand before God empty, humble and repentant, determined to amend our lives and resolved to make reparation and do penance.

Our Lord’s Request for the Feast of Divine Mercy“I desire that the first Sunday after Easter be the Feast of Mercy.”

“My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and a shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy.

The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day are opened all the divine floodgates through which graces flow. . . .

The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My mercy.”

“Yes, the first Sunday after Easter is the Feast of Mercy, but there must also be acts of mercy, and I demand the worship of My mercy through the solemn celebration of the Feast and through the veneration of the image which is painted. By means of this image I shall grant many graces to souls. It is to be a reminder of the demand of My mercy, because even the strongest faith is of no avail without works.” (Diary 299, 699 & 742)
