My connection with the Torres Strait started some sixty-two years ago, I am always proud to acknowledge the people and islands of this very special part of Australia. As a young boy, aged one, I arrived here and left some ten years later having lived on both Thursday Island and St Paul’s, travelling with my family around the many islands on the converted pearling lugger, the Herald. Over the many years between leaving in 1964 and returning in 2008, I made friends in the Royal Australian Navy with many boys from the Torres Strait. Pedro Stevens, Philip Dorante and Phil Ketchell to name a few. In 2008 I returned to the Torres Strait to follow a dream of mine, to become a teacher. I had my final practicum at Dauan Campus and stayed for another three years. As a new teacher I was to meet so many hard working and dedicated teachers working up here; Nina and Zoe to name a few. From the three year period working here, my wife, Christine and I have made many life long friends. It is great to see many of the children that we taught now finishing or have finished High School and moved on to rewarding careers, both academically and sports orientated. One such student, Adimin, has returned to the island to be a valuable member of the community. I always enjoy looking at the old school photographs and the students now at Dauan Campus enjoy looking at their older siblings when they were at the school at a similar age. I find myself back on the island again for the last term of 2016. The children who were in Pre-Prep on my last visit are now on the cusp of finishing Primary School and commencing the next phase of education on the mainland. None of this would have been possible without my wife letting me move away from Canberra to pursue my dream, of which I am thankful. I have been lucky to join the campus for this term. The campus has such a dedicated group of teachers and support crew. I wish all students finishing their primary years in the Torres Strait the very best for the future and very safe travels in and around the Pearl of the North. Dauan Ngurpay Lag welcomes Mr Mike Washington to our teaching staff. Mr Washington is teaching Pre-Prep, Prep and Year One for the duration of this term. Mr Washington has a strong connection to Torres Strait. This is his story.

T A G A I S T A T E C O L L E G ECelebrating 10 Years as Tagai State College Tagai Tech Maritime Pathways

by Tim HillierHead of DepartmentLand and Sea Management

Year 12 Tagai Tech students continue their coxswain training and nearing completion. Recently

they travelled to Cairns with their trainer Tim Hillier to board the Elizabeth EII to travel back to Thursday Island over six days, during this time they continued their tasks books and assignment work.

Back on Thursday Island they have completed a week of engineering on the TAFE Campus. David McIlwain (Marine Trainer) has done an exceptional job in setting up the marine engineering workshop with

interactive work stations allowing trainees to get hands on experience with replications of the systems found within a Domestic Commercial Vessel. These include ship/shore power and renewable energy systems with DC power storage and distribution. Also in use is a complete fuel system and bilge arrangement.

Trainees are able to assemble and disassemble components of a vessel that often are too difficult to access on an operating commercial vessel or can only be accessed when the vessel is in slip.

Year 11 students of the Tech Program are completing their General Purpose Hand Certificate and have been completing their Marine Radio licence and constructing knot boards. This training gives an excellent pre requisite knowledge for students to continue their coxswains training in 2017.

Iama Ngurpay Lag Newsreel

At the end of last term our Pre-Prep/Prep/Year 1 class presented a play from their English

unit “Rumble in the Jungle”. All the students participated in a part. They held masks, spoke about the story and did some lovely singing about animals in the jungle.

The performance was watched by many of our parents who attended our last parade for the end of term 3. It is lovely to see parent attendance at our school parades as this is one way they can participate in their child’s education and see first hand all the hard work that teachers and staff put into preparing these performances.

We are now well into term 4 and our students have settled into their routines and ready for learning. Last week the students were very excited as the school held part 2 of our school sports carnival. Our older students participated in Oz Tag on Thursday

afternoon 20 October.Maggie Larry (Miak) was named senior

best girls overall player scoring 1 try while Pryce Gesa (Ausa) was named seniors best boys overall scoring 3 trys. Trudy Mareko (Ausa) scored 2 trys and named best overall intermediate player. Well Done!

On Friday 21 October the whole school participated in our final sports day. They played Newcombe, Volleyball and Basketball.

The Minor Junior Newcombe Ausa teams won both sets winning 14/3 and 19/14. The Intermediate Volleyball team won 2 sets with a score of 15/13. The winning teams from Basketball were Intermediate (Miak) 22/20 and Seniors (Ausa) 30/9. Great Job!

Overall it was a fantastically fun day enjoyed by all students, staff and families. There was great team spirit displayed on the day and enthusiasm as the students scored points for their team.

The final total score for 2016 was Ausa 325 points and Miak 352 points. Congratulations to all players for your efforts in supporting your teams and to everyone who supported our ball sports carnival. Koeyma Eso!
