May 13, 2018 - Ascension of the Lord
What is the meaning of the Ascension? What insight can we draw from it that affects how we live this coming week or later today? The human Jesus, our Lord and Master, lived — not exactly in luxury — worked hard, made friends, made enemies, suffered, died, rose and later ascended to heaven. His human flesh didn’t evaporate. His body — somehow changed but nonetheless still a real body — lives in glory. One continuing element of Jesus’ teaching while on earth is that what happens to him will and must happen to us.
Here’s the dark side, which comes in degrees of intensity. We have to work. We fail often even when it’s not our fault. We suffer physical and emotional pain, loss, grief and injustice. We shed tears. We get exhausted. Just … like … Jesus. But there is where the dark side flips and becomes stunningly bright. Because after Jesus accomplished all those things, he ascended in bodily form to eternal glory!
And therefore, so will we. As Paul wrote to the Romans,
we are “joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so
that we may also be glorified with him” (8:17).

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL JULY 30TH—AUGUST 3RD Where children will learn about God’s unfailing love and that he is always with us even in the darkest times. Registration begins June 1st after the Masses in the Parish Hall. Cost is $30 for children ages 4-11 years old. Teen helpers must be 14 years old and up. Volunteers still needed for core positions.
VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED FOR SUMMER VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL We are looking for adults who can volunteer to work at the week long event in the Parish Hall during the morning hours of 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM in the last week of July. Adults from the parish are needed to oversee the stations where small groups of children are learning about God in faith lessons, games, crafts, and even snack time. No experience is needed. If you want to help contact Mary Ellen or leave your name and phone number at the church office. Youth helpers are also needed to help out with drama skits and to be group leaders. Parents of children in RE can return the interest/participation form given out last week at classes. We can not have this program without your commitment to have your children attend July 30– August 3rd and unless we have two more adult volunteers needed to run the program.
Prayer Request for our Confirmation Candidates
Our high school Confirmation students have been preparing this year for Confirmation. They are
Alexis Schuettke and Connor Schuettke. Our candidates will be getting confirmed on May 20 at the
5:00 pm Mass at St. Francis Catholic Church in Sherwood. Archbishop Emeritus John Vlazny will be
the main celebrant.
Our church community can help lift up in prayer our First Communion students and our Confirmation candidates for
this final month of preparation. As you enter or leave the church please take a colored paper that has a student’s
name on it from the baskets at the church doors. We thank you in advance for taking the time to include them in
your prayers.
Your continuous
support to
St Cyril Parish.
