WELCOME FROM THEWCC PRESIDENTWELCOME TO THE WIMBLEDON CRICKET CLUB

The new season is nearly here and winter nets have been well attended, so I suspect competition for places in the teams will be hard.

Last year we did well winning the 2nd XI and 4th XI competitions as well as getting to the National 20/20 Finals in Derby. We have the talent within the club to go further this year and it is time we won the 1st XI title again. Availability is a key factor throughout the sides so please focus on this during the coming months.

I am pleased to welcome our new Director of Cricket, Jonathan Speller. He has settled in well and is getting to know everyone – I know we will all give him our full support. We also welcome back Simon Robins (Robbo) as our Chairman, best known as the most successful Chairman the Club has ever had. I am sure he will be looking to add more successes to our club achievements! The rest of the “back room” team is the same and we have kept fully fit during the winter months and we look forward to supporting all the sides as the season unfolds.

As the news of bad sportsmanship filters through from Cape Town just a word on this subject. Our Club is well known and envied throughout the UK and abroad, and it is important that we do not tarnish the Club’s reputation in any way. So remember to play fair, respect the umpires and the opposition, but always play hard and play to win.

Good luck and enjoy your cricket this summer.

WELCOME TO 2018 SEASON

As we urge the days to get longer and the frost to make way for fresh spring mornings, the time is right to welcome you all back to the start of the season ahead. The 2018 season promises to be very successful, with our indoor men’s team having already reached a Regional final before the clocks are set forward. This year I am aiming to capitalise on the great platform that has been created by the hard work and efforts of two very special Wimbledonians, Matthew Spriegal and Nicky Pym, who have left their roles as Cricket Director and Cricket Administrator respectfully.

We would like to thank Nicky for her dedication, attention to detail and relentless effort in ensuring that all junior fixtures and communications were meticulously managed and delivered to our members and staff. Nicky has accepted an exciting position with the Premier League and we wish her every success and happiness in her new role. If changing jobs was not enough, Nicky will be getting married this summer! I speak on behalf of everyone at TWC when I congratulate her and send our fondest love to her on this very special day.

As many of you already know, Matthew has accepted the important role as Surrey’s new Junior Performance Coach. Matthew confidently steered TWC’s cricket section with excellence over the past three years, both on and off the field. Matthew has become an integral part of the Wimbledon cloth and leaves behind a legacy that will help shape the future of the junior section for years to come. His impact will be missed off the field but, in fantastic news that I am delighted to confirm, his efforts for the mighty Dons will continue on the field as he returns as a playing member in 2018.

A special congratulations to the Travelbag Surrey Championship, in which all our adult league teams compete, as they celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2018. Many Wimbledon alumnus have and are serving on the Championship committee, these include Paul Bedford, Crispin Lyden-Cowan, Simon Robins and Alexandra Anderson. The year is sure to involve well-deserved celebrations as the Championship continues to offer some of the best league cricket in the country. Bon Anniversaire and may there be many more milestones to celebrate in the future!

A last word from me as we head into preparations for a full schedule of cricket across our junior and senior membership. I am looking forward to meeting many of you over the warmer months ahead and want to emphasise that my door is always open – and my

Good luck to all our playing members on their quest to improve our league standings from 2017, especially our 2nd and 4th XI adult teams who both aim to defend their Premier Championship titles. Enjoy your time on the field in both practise and competition. Be proud to wear The Wimbledon Club crest and remember to always play in the spirit of our wonderful game.

We go together as one and are all, as ever, the Mighty Dons.

As many of you will already know I am leaving the Club to take a full-time role with Surrey CCC. This is a great career move for me and one that wouldn’t have been possible without the opportunity TWC offered me three years ago. In that time I have not only learnt a huge amount, but made some great friends and had a lot of fun along the way. There are too many people to name in this short amount of words, but I would like to thank everybody at the Club who commits so much time to make this club so good, from full-time employees to age-group administrators.

2017 has been the best year in my time at the Club with a personal highlight being the National T20 Quarter Final at the Club where the 1st XI were victorious and received fantastic support from all

areas of the club. Unfortunately, the 1st XI fell short in the National Final, however it was a great achievement by the team in a tough competition.

As well as this success, the 2nd XI and 4th XI both won their league titles, with the 3rd XI falling just short.

The juniors also thrived this year with more boys and girls representing the Club at all ages. We entered more teams into leagues than we had done before, which has led to more opportunity for children to play. With that we achieved some great league and cup titles, which is testament to the work the managers, administrators and coaches do with the children through the summer and winter. The girls’ section continues to grow and because of this we were able to enter the girls into tournaments at two age groups, which is fantastic for their development.

The senior sections are starting to see the fruits of the junior part of the Club with boys not only playing but putting in match winning contributions in our five teams, helping them to league success.

I have loved my time here at TWC and will continue to play for the Club next season. I hope to see many of you at the Club and will look forward to catching up with you then.

WCC 1ST XI CAPTAIN REPORT – OLLY SWANN

The 1st XI had an up and down year in Surrey Championships this year, finishing fourth. We enjoyed some very good wins, including at home to East Molesey and Ashtead. We also had fantastic wins away from home at Sunbury, Weybridge and Reigate. We were unable to string together a run of victories to really make a challenge for the League title.

There were notable performances throughout the year : Nick Welch was brilliant with the bat, scoring 897 runs at an average of 32 in all competitions; Ryan Patel scored a brilliant 147* in the opening game of the year, setting him up for a successful summer and securing his first professional contract at Surrey CCC. Our overseas player, Sanjaya Chathuranga enjoyed success with both bat and ball, scoring 350 runs and taking 35 wickets. We look forward to having him in our side once again next season.

To keep us going throughout the long summer, our form in the T20 competition was phenomenal, taking us to the National

Final at Derby. Along the way we had good victories against Havant, Tunbridge Wells, Penzance and Clifton.

Unfortunately, we did not bat well enough in the final against South Northumberland and were unable to come away with the National Title. We hope to go one step further in 2018!

We are proud members of The Surrey Premiership, helping demonstrate once again that it is the leading Premier League in the country.

WCC 2ND XI CAPTAIN REPORT – DAVID WILLS

The 2nd XI lost two of their first three games in 2017, including one to closest title rival, Sunbury – not the ideal foundation on which to base a title challenge! For the team to end up winning the league with a game to spare therefore speaks volumes for the quality of cricket played since.

Winning the title was made even more pleasing by the competitiveness of the division this year ; the quality of cricket was as high as it has been for many years. u

No fixture was easy to predict, as evidenced by the fact that the two teams to get relegated took points off the top two sides during the course of the season. The key to the 2’s success was an ability to win the close games.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the season was the emergence of many Academy players who made key contribu-tions to winning games for the team. A total of nine Academy players were used throughout the season with four of them also going on to represent the 1st XI. Special mentions must go to Niall Solomon (third highest run scorer with 346 runs @ 43) and 16-year-old Billy Sewell (who in the four games he played quickly established himself as the team’s go-to bowler, despite being the youngest member of the squad).

The 2nd XI squad will be looking forward to defending the title next year in what promises to be another keenly fought campaign.

WCC 3RD XI CAPTAIN REPORT – ADAM SLATER

The 3rd XI enjoyed another consistently good season in 2017 and for the majority of the year were well in the hunt for the title, before ultimately falling just short.

A number of players were utilised throughout the season, but the side did manage to retain a regular core, which really helped to build a fantastic team spirit, with a group that genuinely enjoyed each other’s successes as much as their own.

Having lost the previous season’s lead batsman and bowler, there were early season questions as to who would step up to fill these two voids. However, in reality, wins this season were based much more on all-round team performances, with a number of players having very good seasons, and with all members of the squad stepping up at different times.

It was noticeable this season how many young players featured regularly in the 3rd XI, and also how many were able to push on and play a big part in the 2’s title win – a real testament to the way the Club is run from top to bottom. If this squad can stay largely intact, and with another season’s experience in League cricket behind them, there is no reason the 3’s can’t dominate and win the title next season.

WCC 4TH CAPTAIN REPORT – ARTHUR CROCKER

The 4th XI had an excellent year, winning the 4th XI Premier Division title with 305 points, 21 points ahead of Dulwich, with a playing record of 13 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss and 2 of the games abandoned.

The 4’s scrambled home by 3 wickets in the first game of the season against Sinjuns, setting the standard as the first five games were won. Individual highlights included 52 by Tom Cooper against Sinjuns, Salman Mahmood’s 5-25 and Nick James’ 63* against Streatham, and James Page’s 58 and Amjad Husain’s 71* against Dulwich.

The excellent start was halted by a high scoring draw at Sunbury, where our young gun Tim Lloyd scored 68 on debut in senior cricket in an opening partnership of 102 with Victor Bakker (53) in a score of 242-8 declared. Sunbury’s innings got off to a flying start before being pegged back. The game ebbed and flowed before the 4’s claimed a winning draw with Sunbury 31 short.

Normal service was resumed for the final month of the season with the last four

games all being won and providing the highlights: George Thomas (54) against Spencer, Harry Crocker 6-14 against Walton (the best bowling performance of the season), George Thomas (50), Andy Drummond (50), and Rahul Desai (98 – the highest individual score of the season) all against Oxted.

The 4th XI 2017 season has been an excellent all-round team effort, with more than 40 players contributing, and a good mix of experience and youth, many of whom produced excellent performances in their first season in senior cricket. The 4th XI squad can look forward with confidence to defending the title in 2018.

WCC 5TH CAPTAIN REPORT – TIM ASH VIE

The 5th XI put in some terrific performances throughout the season. As is always the case early in the season, getting a team out is an achievement in itself as many of the boys are still at school! Many thanks to the new and old faces for helping the Club out when it was needed most. u

What was especially pleasing was the number of boys who represented the 5th

XI, either this or last season, and gone on to play in the higher sides and contributed to their success. We are looking forward to nurturing the next crop of youngsters and helping them progress at the Club.

ACADEMY REPORT – NEAL HARVEY

The 2017 Under 21 season was a challenging one. Out of the 7 games scheduled we sadly only played 3 and of which 2 were lost – but spirits remain high and we are ready for a successful 2018! There were some notable performances with Niall Solomon making a superb 100 in 65 balls and Billy Sewell taking 4-37 vs Stoke D’Abernon and in the win over Worcester Park fifteen year old Rahul Desai carried his bat with 76 not out from 100 balls, Harry Thomas took 4 wickets for 10 runs from 8 overs and Tom Usher took 3 wickets and 2 catches.

The U19s had a mixed season. Sadly we didn’t quite make it out of the group in the National T20 competition, winning two and losing two with two concessions. But the U19s provided the standout performance of the academy season, when they beat Sutton on the 14th July.

In the County Dennis Jacobs cup, the U17s had a successful run in the qualifying group, winning 2 of their three matches including a nail bitter vs Barnes when Aaron Edmunds (18) and Umair Anis (11) mustered enough runs for the last wicket to keep us in the game, and our bowling was tight enough to defend a below par 85.

Umair took 3 wickets. Having qualified for the quarterfinals we just lost out to a strong Spencer side.

In the summer Mid Surrey league, weather washed out two of our four games. We lost to Spencer again however came back to beat Malden Wanderers, Rahul Desai 56, and Pravin Kiritharan 4 wickets.

Across the three age groups our top run scorers were Rahul Desai 219, Niall Solomon 193, Ben Turner 158, and Billy Sewell 142. Most wickets is shared between Billy Sewell and 14 year old Pravin Kiritharan, both with 16.

The academy’s goal is to encourage young players to play Saturday adult cricket. During 2017, 47 young players did so, some as young as 12 years old!

The academy players are consistently impressing the adult captains and making selection choices highly competitive.

I remain proud of the achievements of the academy players, and look forward to enjoying their cricket with them in future years. ■
