Christopher Meloni returns to the ‘Law & Order’ beat with ‘Organized Crime’After years of suggestions and rumors, it’s finally official:
Elliot Stabler is back.Following a decade away from the police-detective role
he originated on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” Christopher Meloni reprises the part in the latest addition to the NBC franchise from executive producer Dick Wolf with the Thursday, April 1, premiere of “Law & Order: Organized Crime.” Reintroduced in the “SVU” episode immediately preceding the new show’s debut, Stabler now heads a New York task force targeting the title criminal activity; cast members also include Dylan McDermott, Tamara Taylor and Charlotte Sullivan (“Rookie Blue”).
“When you say ‘Yes’ to something like this,” the amiable Meloni reflects, “you can have all the fantasies you want about what it’s going to be like, how it will turn out, etc. I must say the reality has been very comfortable, though I wouldn’t say ‘effortless,’ since getting back into being the lead of a one-hour show takes effort. But it feels right and good, OK in all ways.”
Many viewers are familiar with the Stabler character – who has remained very evident in frequent “SVU” repeats on such cable outlets as USA Network and ION Television – but Meloni attests there are new differences to him, too. “I think what plays into it is the environment that he finds himself in,” the actor notes. “Policing in society is a
big topic now, and certain aspects of the show will reflect where we’re at with that. We hopefully find Stabler a little older and wiser, but also with the heroic qualities that I think he possessed before.”
While he maintains his reason for agreeing to play Stabler again is a story for “years down the road,” reappearing on “Special Victims Unit” means Meloni has a much-anticipated reunion with Mariska Hargitay, who has played Olivia Benson since that show started 22 years ago. She’s the real-life godmother to Meloni’s daughter, indicating their closeness, but Meloni admits to having had butterflies over reteaming with her on camera.
“Prepping for it was nerve-wracking,” he says. “I had no doubt that the chemistry would find its familiar place, and that’s how it played out ... but I did have the thought, ‘How is this going to work?’ ”
Though “Law & Order: Organized Crime” hit a couple of speed bumps on the way to premiering – a change in showrunners (it’s now “Empire” and “The L Word” veteran Ilene Chaiken) and a production shutdown over a positive COVID-19 test – Meloni considers it “a hall pass” to be back filming on the streets of New York. “We’re doing it under very strict guidelines, and everybody has to follow the protocols, but we’re getting things done.”

Some might call Pete Alonso’s 2020 campaign a sophomore slump. Others would say it’s merely the product of a pandemic-warped season.
Everyone would agree 2020 was a strange year.Whatever the case, the burly first baseman has put it behind
him and he’s ready to embark on what he hopes will be a memorable 2021 campaign that begins Thursday, April 1, on ESPN, when his New York Mets visit the Washington Nationals.
Obviously, the man known as the “Polar Bear” set an impossibly high bar for himself in 2019, when he slammed a rookie record 53 home runs to win National League Rookie of the Year honors and finish seventh in MVP voting. So his diminished numbers the following year were viewed as something of a failure.
But that was in a 60-game schedule, one that is less forgiving to those prone to slow starts like Alonso’s. To his credit, he recovered from his .208 average with six homers and .700 OPS through the first 35 games to hit .265 with 10 homers and a .992 OPS in the
last 22. Along the way, he learned from his mistakes, such as not pressing and swinging at bad pitches when the hits don’t come as he did early in 2020. Had he had a full 162-game slate to right himself, his numbers might have approached his 2019 totals.
He’ll certainly be relied on to bring the right-handed thunder in 2021 in a muscular though lefty-heavy Mets lineup that also includes Michael Conforto, Jeff McNeil, Dominic Smith and Brandon Nimmo (as well as newly acquired All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor) as the Mets do battle with the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Miami Marlins and Nationals in an uber-competitive National League East.

In a normal season of “Top Chef,” Tom Colicchio is out and about.
When he’s not filming the Bravo competition series, he can be found checking out a host city’s restaurant scene, attending local shows and sporting events and generally enjoying everything the area has to offer in the one-and-a-half to two-month location shoots.
But thanks to the pandemic, Season 18 in Portland, Ore., was not a normal season. When he wasn’t shooting, the New York-based chef had to quarantine in his rented accommodations. And when he did manage to get away on his own, it was to go fishing for steelhead and trout with only his dog by his side.
The new season gets underway Thursday, April 1, in the City of Roses, where 15 executive chefs and restaurateurs will bring their unique skill sets and diverse flavors to bear in challenges including feeding hundreds of frontline workers, celebrating the city’s Pan-African cuisine and crabbing on the Oregon coast in tribute to state native and culinary icon James Beard.
Colicchio, who returns as head judge alongside Gail Simmons and host Padma Lakshmi, says the season went well and Portland served as a worthy backdrop for the competition.
“It was great,” he says, “because we were in Portland but also got out of Portland. We were on the coast for a while. We were in wine country for a little bit so we got around. So Portland, it’s a great place. Unfortunately for us, for me, I couldn’t go out and eat, (and) there’s some great restaurants. In fact, I have friends who opened restaurants there and I couldn’t go to any of them because I was kind of in lockdown.”
Shot in September and October of 2020, the series took advantage of the region’s bountiful seafood and produce, particularly fruit, to incorporate into challenges and brought back past chefs including Richard Blais, Carrie Baird, Kristen Kish, Edward Lee and Brooke Williamson to serve on the elite judging and dining panels.
Despite all the restrictions, Colicchio enjoyed the season and is proud of the show’s production staff for making everything work under difficult conditions.
“We didn’t even know if there was going to be a season,” he says, “and we managed and got through it. ... And having so many of the ex-contestants come back was really interesting because they have such a different perspective, having been on before, and so their comments are really good. And that was a lot of fun. It was good to see some of them again because I typically don’t see them for the most part after the season’s over. So it was really good to be able to see all of the chefs.

The new episode “Never Too Late: The Doc Severinsen Story” profiles the iconic trumpeter and bandleader who maintains a rigorous schedule of touring, per-forming and teaching well into his 90s. Probably best known for his 30-year-plus gig as bandleader on “The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson,” Severinsen fell in love with the trumpet during his childhood as the son of an Oregon dentist and won the Mu-sic Educator’s National Contest at the age of 12. Interviewees include current “Tonight Show” bandleader Questlove, master trumpeters Chris Botti and Arturo Sandoval and comics Bob Saget and Martin Mull.

In the new episode “Dark Har-vest,” after a Marine Corps veteran’s SUV is stolen with her service dog inside, Magnum and Higgins (Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks) race to find the car, the dog and the car thief, whom they believe may be an escaped victim of a kidnapping. Meanwhile, after a disgruntled customer sues TC (Stephen Hill), he recruits Rick and Jim (Zachary Knighton, guest star Bobby Lee) to help prove the lawsuit is a scam. Christopher Thornton also guest stars.
