THE CONGREGATION OF THE SACRED HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY CONTINUES TO SERVE SAN DIMAS, LA VERNE, AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES.
Lent isn’t a diet plan, it’s a season for growth in faith. Whatever I do for Lent, whatever I give up for Lent is
meant, to help me grow in my knowledge and love of God and my mindfulness of God in my daily life.

2 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF MARY
FROM THE PASTOR March 17, 2019 3
My dear sisters and brothers, A little girl is sitting on her mother’s lap. Looking up into her mother’s eyes, she says, “Mommy, you have a beautiful face, sparkling eyes and lovely hair. Why are your arms so ugly?” Her mother explains; “When you were a baby, I left you sleeping alone in your crib one evening, the first time I had ever left you alone in the house. I went down the street to see a neighbor for a few minutes. While I was gone, our house caught on fire. When I realized that it was our house that was burning, I raced up the street. I dashed through the flames and grabbed you out of your crib. I held you close to me and tried to protect you from the flames. As we ran to safety, my hands and arms got badly burned. That’s why they’re so ugly. With tears in her eyes, the little girl looked at her mother’s face again. “Mommy, you have a beautiful face, sparkling eyes and lovely hair. But your hands and arms are the most beautiful of all.” A little girl realizes her mother’s devotion to her in the “cross” of her mother’s scars. So many times we are very much unaware of the crosses of others. Crosses always leave scars. He came back as the resurrected one bearing
his scars. They were something that linked him to the past but also prepared him for the present. Richard Rohr reminds us, “Unless we transform our pain we transmit it.” O God who chooses to walk with us and even dwell within us to never lose hope, trust your love can transform the darkest nights into the morning of Easter joy. Help us each day, help us to help each other each day, to STAY RISEN. Calm me, quiet me, settle me… Steady me, balance me, ground me… Plant me, root me, embed me… Support me, sustain me, protect me… Forgive me, pardon me, free me… Refresh me, restore me, heal me… Enfold me, embrace me, hold me… Lord, hear my prayer today! With my love and prayers as we continue the journey helping each other carry the cross and allowing others to help us. Fr. Rich, SS.CC.

If you are interested in learning more about placing an ad in our bulletin, please contact Travis Lawmaster at 909.235.4855, or by email at [email protected]. Placing an ad in our bulletin raises visibility for your business in the community, and functions as a chari-table donation to the parish also, which helps us tremendously. GIFTS OF STOCK Gifts of appreciated assets such as stock are an excellent way for you to make a charitable gift. Stocks may be transferred directly to the Archdiocese for the benefit of parish, school or favorite Catholic ministry. These gifts will not affect your cash flow, and they provide the following tax benefits: • A possible charitable deduction to help you save on taxes • Bypass of federal and state capital gains taxes • Avoidance of the tax on net investment income From a tax perspective, a gift of appreciated assets makes good sense. You can make the capital gains taxes optional, achieve significant tax savings and support our programs. Please contact Brooke Glazer at 213-637-7381 or [email protected].

6 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT BOUNDLESS COMPASSION
B!ndless C"pas#$
“Each of us has two wolves in the heart, one of love and one of hate. Everything depends on which one we feed each day.” (Rick Hanson, Bud-dha’s Brain). ..all humans have the propensity for love or hate. .“ they live and tumble together in every heart, like wolf cubs tussling in a cave.. There is no killing the wolf of hate; the aversion in such an attempt would actually create what you’re trying to destroy. But you can watch the wolf carefully, keep it tethered, and limit it’s alarm, righteousness, grievances, resentments, contempt and prejudice. Meanwhile, keep nourishing and encouraging the wolf of love.” Relationships nurture compassion and help it to thrive..When we have no connection or relationship with people who are different from ourselves,it is much easier to lack concern for what happens to them.. Empathy develops when we know another’s personal history. Compassionate presence thrives on trusted relationships.
Using the to identify groups of people keeps them at a distance and negates a relationship with them. Naming peo-ple as the poor, the diabetic in Room 214, the alcoholic, or the homeless snips off the thread of connection. People become objectified rather than personalized. When we do not have a connection with a person or group, it becomes much easier to demonize or scapegoat them for the ills of society. The actions given in the parable of Mathew 25..point to what St John of the Cross indicated as the most vital ques-tion at the end of our life: “ Have you loved well? Was everything that was done, done for love’s sake?”.. “ Just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me”( Mt 25:40). When our compas-sionate deeds resemble those of the parable, we reveal the face of the Holy One. We make visible the hiddenness of Christ with our actions when they come from the storehouse of our love.. Reflection: How do you experience the wolf of love and the wolf of hate in yourself? Imagine that Jesus stands by your side as you speak to each of the wolves about your life. How have you lived this week? What are some ways that you “love well” through one or more of the Works of Compassion?

10 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT THANK YOU
HOLY NAME OF MARY SCHOOL February 10, 2019 11 MEDITACION DEL PADRE RICH March 17, 2019 11

DID YOU KNOW?
Know who is most vulnerable to abuse.
All children are vulnerable to potential sexual abuse, but predators look for situations and circumstances to manipulate that may make some children more sus-ceptible than others. Many studies show that a higher percentage of young girls are vulnerable to sexual abuse than young males. Child abuse is a societal problem, and we must be aware of signs that indi-cate vulnerability or potentially troubling circum-stances – inappropriate relationships between an adult and a young child, a child demonstrating signs of abuse by his or her behavior. All children are our responsibility. To read the full VIRTUS® article “Who is Most Vulnerable to Potential Sexual Abuse?”
