T THE CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST 71 Murray Avenue, Goshen, New York 10924 www.sjegoshen.org - (845) 294-5328 - [email protected] TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - JUNE 25, 2017 We bid farewell later this week to Fr. Jeff, who will begin his assignment to Msgr. Farrell High School on Staten Island; he’ll be back in the early fall for a celebration. At the same time, we welcome the return of Fr. Peter Heasley, who was assigned to St. John’s from 2014 to 2016, and has recently completed his first year of doctoral studies; he will be with us through late Au- gust. + + + We recently received a note of gratitude from Catholic Charities Community Services of Orange and Sullivan for our mite box donations, which totaled $872.99. Every penny of this money assists the needy in our community and region. If you’re a golfer, please consider taking part in CCCSOS’s annual golf outing on Monday, July 17 at West Hills. For more information, please visit www.catholiccharitiesoc.org, or call 294-5124, x303. + + + On Pentecost Sunday, June 4, four parishioners were selected to serve three-year terms on the Pastoral Advisory Council. We congratulate Nancy Carey, Jim Iaquinto, Mark O’Hara, and Therese Urato. They join Maryellen Albanese, Ann Carpen- tieri, Darren Gamma and Kathy Valerio, whose terms end in 2018, and Joe Brown, Martin Crawford, Mark Gargiulo and Cyndy Hand, whose terms conclude in 2019. I am most grateful to Hortencia Contreras, Vin DeLuca, and Kitty Irons, whose service on the PAC ended with the May meeting, as well as to the other parishioners who submitted their names for selection this year: Audrey Craghan, Diane Dinan, Eileen Dorian, Jim Langlois, Janet Markiewicz, Ken Obremski, Paula Ol- sen, and Rhoda Palmer. + + + Some time ago, I received a call from Chief Jim Watt of the village police regarding an event called “Slide the City.” In es- sence, North Church Street is going to be transformed into a giant water slide from Golden Hill Avenue down to the five corners on Saturday, August 5. For our purposes, the primary concern is access to the church for confessions and the three Saturday Masses. Since Murray Avenue will be accessible only from Erie Street and points east, it’s probable that parking will only be permitted on one side of Murray, so that cars can turn around and get out after Mass. My advice? Come to Mass on Sunday, August 6; we can only imagine the traffic nightmare that will ensue on Saturday. + + + One project which we’ve put off for far too long is the replacement of the bulbs in the hanging lights in the church. This is primarily due to prolonged head-scratching over how best to safely and efficiently reach them (we’re going to rent a lift). This week, some folks from Orange and Rockland will be coming to do an energy survey, and then let us know how much O & R will (hopefully) be willing to kick in toward the replacement of the old fluorescent bulbs there now with LEDs. There is a very small asbestos abatement project going on in the school this weekend; it should all be wrapped up by Sunday evening. On Monday morning, a crew will begin removal of several boilers, with installation of the new ones to follow. We have also solicited bids from several qualified roofing contractors for the replacement of the roof on the classroom wing of the school; we expect their answers very soon. Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann
