PROMOTING GROWTH OF TEACHER LEADERSHIP What we learned at the WPWP Structure the Summer Institute around leadership issues.

Encourage teachers to participate in as many regional and national workshops, initiatives, retreats, and conferences as possible.

Insist on a teacher leader for whatever governing body the site maintains (Fellows Council for the WPWP). Allow this teacher leader to set the agenda and conduct all meetings.

Appoint fellows to serve on financial committees.

Support “thinking outside the box.”

Find ways to pay teachers for their efforts.

Recruit new fellows who have already demonstrated leadership in their teaching situations.

All teacher leaders must mentor teachers who will step into each leadership role

Planning for Leadership Development

Leadership Development PlanUse the handout to document your

thinking and learning in this session (10 minutes).

Work in groups of 4 to share these plans and get more ideas from each other (20 min).
