IN GRATITUDE“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens” (Eph 1:3).

Adopting Saint Paul’s words in the above quote, we praise God for choosing us and blessing us in His beloved Son Jesus Christ. The visit of Bishop Barres last Sunday, during which he installed me as the 7th pastor of this parish, Saint Jane Frances de Chantal, was colorful. His words were inspiring, and the liturgy was spiritually energizing.

I would like to thank every parishioner who contributed in no small measure to make the celebration a huge success; from the Mass in the church, to the reception in the parish auditorium. I wouldn’t dare to mention individual names, for fear that I might leave someone out. However, the following groups were outstanding: Ushers, Choir, Extraordinary minsters of Holy Communion (EMs), our young Lectors, Altar Servers, Knights of Columbus, Ministry of Consolation, and the team of dedicated Ladies and Gentlemen who arranged the auditorium and set up the delicious food, from Costco that we all partook. May the Lord bless you all and your families who supported you in your service to the parish community.

I stand in gratitude also to the numerous parishioners and visitors who brought me felicitations and gifts. I will write to each individual or family who left addresses on the envelopes. However, there were a few who did not identify themselves with any address, hence my inability to thank them individually. I am grateful to all of those people as well. I pray God to bless and reward all of the known and unknown benefactors.

UPCOMING MAJOR CELEBRATIONS1. All Saints DayOn Friday, November 1st, the whole Church will celebrate the Solemn Feast of ALL SAINTS. It is a holy day of obligation, meaning, all the baptized are required by Church Law to attend Mass and participate actively and fully in the celebration of the Eucharist.

This feast was originally a commemoration of all the nameless martyrs of the persecutions. It was first celebrated by the Eastern

Church on May 13. In Antioch, however, it was celebrated on the Sunday after Pentecost, and the East Syrian Church celebrated it on the Friday after Easter. The Armenian and Coptic Churches also had different dates to celebrate it. In Rome, it was first celebrated during the Pontificate of Pope Boniface IV on May 13th, in the year 609, when the Pantheon became a Christian church, honoring Mary and all the martyrs. Then, during the papacy of Pope Gregory III (731-741), a chapel was opened in Saint Peter’s Basilica in honor of the Savior, Mary, the Apostles, Martyrs and Confessors. It was dedicated on November 1st. It seems that fixed the current date for the celebration of All the Saints throughout the Western Church.

The Feast of All Saints is a celebration of blessedness and holiness in the Church across all time. To attain this life of holiness is a pilgrimage, during which we are nourished by the Word of God, the Eucharistic food and sustained by the prayers and virtues of those who have gone before us and even now accompany us on our journey, while we focus on the eternal Jerusalem, our heavenly home.

2. All Souls DayAll Souls Day is celebrated on November 2nd, to commemorate the faithful departed. Although it is not listed as a Mass of Obligation, it is celebrated as a Solemn feast, which supplants the Sunday liturgy, whenever it falls on a Sunday. This feast first appeared in the 7th century monastic tradition of St. Isidore of Seville, who had rules about celebrating a liturgy for all the deceased on the day after Pentecost. However, in the 10th century, St. Odilo of Cluny prescribed the commemoration of all the dead on November 2, 998. The Roman Church accepted the custom only in the 13th century. The liturgy of this day, although often somber, it is one of hope, emphasizing that through the death and resurrection of Christ, all who die believing in Christ will also share the eternal life of the risen Christ. While commemorating our deceased brothers and sisters, the Mass of All Souls Day is a great profession of faith in the resurrection, not just as a reality for Jesus, but as the promise of our own future glorious resurrection.

Reflection Questions for this weekAdults: This Gospel reading suggests that we approach God and each other with humility. What does this mean, in practical terms? How do we “humble” ourselves? What does that mean?Children: Jesus teaches us to be humble – but what does that mean? How do you show you are humble?

St. Frances de Chantal - K of C 300 Club Update – 15th Round – Report No. 2

Hello everyone! As your new Chairman of the 300 Club, I am delighted to provide you with my first update. It has been a few busy months familiarizing myself with the 300 Club operation and I am excited about it’s future. My belief is that our guiding principles should focus on the 3 C’s, Charity, Community and Chance. Our goal is do more in helping the needy, continue to bring our members closer together and increase the number of opportunities to win prizes to our members. Now I am mindful that change is never easy, so we will take this slow in hopes that after people get to know me, they will have a better understanding of what we are trying to accomplish including growing the membership.

I look forward to meeting all of you at the “Thank You” dinner party on November 16th but in the meantime, do not hesitate to contact me or one of the other committee members with any questions you might have. Our contact information is provided below.

Sincerely, John Tomeo

Would You Like to Decorate A Box For Thanksgiving?

We are just beginning our Thanksgiving preparations. Each year we give families in need a Thanksgiving Basket (box) filled with food for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner for Thanksgiving Day. If you would like to help, please consider decorating a cardboard box (approximately 18" X 20"). Some suggestions are to cover the outside of the box with colored paper, wrapping paper, or a fall/Thanksgiving plastic tablecloth. Also, hand-drawn Thanksgiving pictures are a nice added touch. There is no right or wrong way -- feel free to use your imagination. This can be a fun family project -- a time to share our blessings with those in need.

Do not feel obligated to fill the boxes with food. We would be happy to simply receive a decorated box which we would then fill with food donated to the pantry. However, if you would like to donate food for these boxes, please refer to the list of needed food items.

We will be giving these boxes to families in our community as well as other Long Island parishes and some Charitable Organizations.

Please return decorated boxes as soon as possible but no later than the week of November 13th.

Thank you, Ele Ruth Melendez, Director Parish Social Ministry

ALL SOULS’ DAY

“Christ is the Resurrection and the Life!”

A Memorial of the Faithful Departed was first recorded in 988 AD; this Commemoration All Souls’ Day was accepted by Rome in the 13th century. All Souls’ Day falls on a Saturday this year. It is an important day for all the members of our Parish – especially for those families who suffered the loss of a loved one(s) in the past year. Since this day when we Commemorate all the Faithful Departed is a Saturday in 2019 it is essential for all of our Parish to know that our Annual Commemoration Mass will take place on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the 5:30 PM Vigil Mass. Our entire Parish Family is invited and urged to attend this celebration of eternal life as we join together in prayer and in life’s celebration. Please think how meaningful it will be for all of our friends and fellow parishioners to see, feel and hear your prayerful support at this special Eucharistic Celebration. During the Mass all of the names of this year’s Faithful Departed are solemnly read aloud for all to contemplate and remember.__________________

A CALL FOR THE NAMES OF ALL SERVING ON ACTIVE MILITARY DUTY

Each year our parish family acknowledges all the men and women from our parish or those who are related to members of our parish who are serving our Nation on Active Military Duty throughout the world by listing their names on a plaque that is prominently displayed upon the rear wall of our Church. Each November, the month we celebrate our Nation’s Veterans, this plaque is updated and displayed year-round in the church. Every year we ask that the list be updated. To update the names for the plaque I request that you send each Serviceperson’s information to me. The requested information may be sent via 1) e-mail to [email protected], 2) by regular mail, or 3) by circling or highlighting the information on the Serviceperson listing below and leaving the information at the Pastoral Center to be placed into my mailbox. Please update or include the information for anyone currently serving on active duty: Name, Rank and Branch of Service.

Please provide the information as quickly as possible so that the updated plaque may be ready for display no later than Veteran’s Day – November 11, 2019.
