Our Mission Welcome to The Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion, a welcoming and diverse community seeking to walk in the way of Jesus and to reveal Christ’s reconciling love in our city, nation, and world.

Can I receive Communion? Yes. Whoever you are, wherever you find yourself on the journey of faith, you are welcome to receive the bread and wine made holy.

Are children welcome? Yes. Children are invited to participate actively in the service. Coloring pages, crayons, and books are at the entrances to the church. Nursery care is available 9:00am - 12:00pm for children ages 0-4; the Nursery is located through the lounge. Changing tables are located in the downstairs bathrooms and the Nursery. Our chapel is a sound-proof place to bring a crying infant, or a boisterous toddler, with windows into the church and speakers broadcasting the sound from the service.

How do I find my way around? There is a map by the Welcome Table in the main entryway (on the East side of the church). Also, feel free to ask anyone around you for directions, or help navigating the service.

Where are the restrooms? There are single-user, all-gender restrooms in the Lounge, through the main (East) door, and through the next glass door. There are gendered, larger restrooms downstairs (take the elevator or stairs at the end of the long hallway in front of that entrance). Changing tables are available in the downstairs restrooms or in the nursery.

Is there wheelchair accessibility? Yes. Our entrances have auto-open buttons, and our elevator is ADA compliant. Both the downstairs restrooms and one of the upstairs restrooms are accessible. Everyone is invited to remain seated during the service as they need. What about hearing assistance? We can help there, too. Hearing assistance devices are available from the ushers. Just ask.

How do I get involved? If you begin by filling out a “Connect Card” in your pew, or at the Welcome Table, we’d be glad to keep you up to date with all that goes on here. You can also use the Connect Cards to update your information, request prayers, or to ask a question.

Become a member. All are welcome to be here and to explore. If you would like to learn more and meet interesting people, consider joining in Pilgrimage, the Rector’s classes for newcomers and explorers. Read more on the website or email the rector with questions or to sign up ([email protected]).

Entrance Hymn see insert or hymn boardThe acolytes, choir and clergy process from the baptismal font to the altar as we sing a hymn from the Blue Hymnal 1982 or the black and red “Lift Every Voice and Sing: an African-American Hymnal.” You’ll find all the hymns listed in the weekly insert.

Advent Bidding PrayersThe congregation is invited to respond using the words in bold.

Alleluia, our God and Savior now draws near:O come, let us worship, alleluia.

Dear People of God: In the season of Advent, it is our responsibility and joy to prepare ourselves in heart and mind, for the coming of Christ Jesus, our savior and judge. This season we walk the way of shepherds and wise ones, seeking after the holy child of Bethlehem. Let us hear and heed in Holy Scripture the story of God’s loving purposes, the proclamation of prophets, the hope of salvation. But first, let us pray for the needs of the whole world that Christ came to save.

The Prayers The congregation is invited to sing the refrain after the choir or cantor, and where indicated.

Because this of all things would rejoice Christ’s heart, let us remember in his name the poor and the helpless, the hungry and the oppressed, the sick and those who mourn, the lonely and the unloved, the aged and little children. You are free to add your own prayers silently or aloud. Refrain

Finally, let us remember before God his strong and humble mother, and those who rejoice with us but upon another shore and in a greater light, that whole multitude which no one can number whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in Christ Jesus, we are one for evermore. Refrain

The Nicene Creed Please stand. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Liturgical Changes for Advent

Blue frontal color and matching vestments: The altar is covered with a blue frontal, and the clergy wear blue vestments. Blue is an ancient liturgical color that symbolizes preparation and Mary, Jesus’ mother.Greens on the altar instead of flowers. In keeping with the mood of expectation and reflection that we observe during Advent, we refrain from the use of flower arrangements in the church and simplify with greens only. Lighting of the Advent Wreath: The Presider reads ancient prayers that signify our longing for Christ’s coming, and the coming of God’s reign as we light an additional candle each week during Advent.Advent Bidding Litany instead of Prayers of the People. We bring our prayers for the church and the whole earth to the beginning of the service, instead of praying the Prayers of the People in the middle. This litany is adapted from the service of Lessons and Carols for Advent.Eucharistic Prayer B (Gender-Expansive). We are accustomed to many Eucharistic Prayers at Holy Communion. With words like “For in these last days you sent Christ to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world.” Prayer B, found on page 367 of the Book of Common Prayer, emphasizes our hope for Jesus’ coming. We are using a gender-expansive language version of the prayer approved at this past summer’s General Convention.Spanish in the Liturgy: As more Spanish-speakers and folks with Latinx heritage are joining the church, and moving into the area, the Worship Committee decided to intentionally include Spanish in some specific places in our liturgy. You’ll notice that the Lord’s Prayer is printed both in Spanish and English..Stewardship Prayer: During our annual giving campaign, we pray this prayer to remind us of the theology of giving and to give thanks to God for the generosity of our members that funds our work of mission and ministry.

From our Diocesan Gun Violence Prevention Ministry:

When we proclaim a principle in our public witness, it is important to practice it personally. Along with the Diocese of Missouri we ask all gun owners: Please ensure that all guns in your home are locked and secured against use by children or those suffering agonizing despair.
