W ow, what a day of mixed doubles! Withforty players (20 teams) entered, Priscillaand I had our hands full trying to make this manyfolks get tennis matches in on our six courts. Weorganized a round robin format with tiebreakers todecide the seedings in the main draw. At the endof the tiebreakers we shifted the teams into asingle-elimination draw with those having the bestrecords getting the highest seedings. This made fortrue seeding based on results that morning, however, the draws did not hold to the seedings, which was a testament to how strong and closethe teams were in abilities.
In the Gold Division, after some tough setsleading to the finals, things settled out with theteam of Mitch Levine & Julie DeMayo battlingMitch Reinis & Karely Deal for bragging rights over
the next twelve months. The match see-
sawed throughthe first set.
Numerouslengthygamesthat wentto deuceled to theinevitabletie-breaker.
The pointscontinued
with extremeconsistency,
clever angles,and monster "Mitch"
smashes. In the end, Julie and Mitch edged out thefirst set. In the second set, it appeared that Julie andMitch settled down to a better rhythm, while Mitchand Karely continued their defensive onslaught. Afteranother half-hour, Julie and Mitch were able tooutlast and outgun Mitch and Karely in another hard-fought set. The final score was 7-6, 6-2 in a matchtruly worthy of a Gold Division final. Congrats to MitchLevine & Julie DeMayo our 2018 Mixed Doubles GoldChamps!

Mixed Doubles Gold Finals: Julie DeMayo/Mitch Levineversus Mitch Reinis / Karely Deal

In the Championship Division there were someexperienced, hard-hitting teams battling it out. Afterthe seeding round, Brandon & Danielle Boyce cameout as the top seeds along with Colleen Moryl andIsrael Mora. However, in the main draw the seedswere turned on their heads with newcomers, Adeline& Robert Cook dismissing Israel & Colleen in thequarterfinals. On the other side, the Boyces weredispatched by another set of newcomers, Lisa-MariePetersen and Casey Cook in the quarterfinals.
In the semi-finals, Casey & Lisa-Marie continued toshow good form with Casey's youthful power andLisa-Marie's rock-solid steadiness (always a toughdoubles combination) to dismiss pre-tournamentfavorites Robert Rudelius & Donna Leventhal in anentertaining match. In the other semi, Lockard &Cook showed their experience against two powerfuland skilled players in Adeline & Robert, by playingsteady strong defense and keeping errors to aminimum.
It shaped up to be quite a final, with a fatherversus a son ala Star Wars. The younger Cook andLisa-Marie, came out blazing with a strong hold andan immediate break to start the final. However, theelder Cook and Lockard buckled down for a long, bumpy ride by using Casey's pace to effectivelycounterpunch along with some clever changes ofpace, they countered to build a 5-2 lead. However,Casey & Lisa-Marie weren't going away easily. Theystormed back to 4-5, forcing Cookie to serve out theset. After a tense 30-30 point, Linda & Cookie arrivedat set point. A big serve decided the set in favor ofCookie & Linda.
The second set saw Casey relax and use hisheavy topspin to push their opponents back on theirheels. In addition, Lisa-Marie showed fine hands bothat the net and on the return, cutting her errors in halfas she adjusted to the pace. After some close gamesat the beginning of the set, they built a 5-2 lead oftheir own and never relinquished it, ending the setwith hold of serve that saw Casey overpower bothCookie and Linda to win 6-3.
The final set was a ten-point tiebreaker. Cookieserved first and immediately fell behind off a missedforehand. Then, Casey held on both his servicepoints, followed by a heavy return down the middlethat earned Lisa-Marie and Casey a quick 4-0 lead. That lead quickly evaporated as Linda and Cookiebuckled down and eliminated all errors. Theyproceeded to win eight points in a row and closed
out the match on Cookie's serve, 10-7.Congrats to Linda Lockard and Sean "Cookie"
Cook for a well-played event! Special thanks toPriscilla and Angel for their assistance with getting thefood out for the semis and finals. The crowd for thematches was great and of course, without theplayers, there is no tournament. Please keep lookingfor the upcoming events and participate, participate, participate! Events like this give MCC it'sunique flavor and you always meet new peoplewhen you join us for these tournaments andinterclubs.
