This issue of THE STAR will serve as the June/July issue with the
later summer edition being the August issue.
Dear Friends,
It is my pleasure to announce that your Vestry voted unanimously to issue a call to the Rev. Andrew Charles Reinholz to be Rector of Epiphany Church. It is my further please to inform you that Andrew has accepted the call to be the 16th Rector of Epiphany effective June 1, 2016.
Andrew graduated from Moravian College with a Bachelor of Arts, Major in Religion and Minor in Political Science in 2006.
From 2007 thru 2009 Andrew was the Bishop’s Personal Assistant in the Diocese of Bethlehem. That year he was also a Counselor for Kids Peace in Orefield, PA.
Andrew then moved on to the General Theological Seminary where he graduated with his Masters of Divinity 2012. While at the Semi-nary Andrew did his field education at The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in New York City.
After graduation from the Seminary Andrew was the Bishop’s Chap-lain and Personal Assistant from 2012 to 2013. In 2013 Andrew was appointed Vicar of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Emmaus, PA thru 2015. He was also the Staff Liaison to the Renewal Assembly of the Diocese.
You’ll notice I refer to our new Rector as Andrew—that is to avoid confusion—his wife is the Rev. Kimberly Reinholz. Kim is the Associ-ate for Services, Campus Ministry and Pastoral Care at Grace & Holy Trinity here in Richmond.
The Reinholz’ s have a 3 year old daughter, Audrey, and are expect-ing their second child in late August.
Please be sure to attend the reception for the Reinholz’s after the 10:30 AM service on June 5th, his first Sunday with us.

Church Picnic & Celebration
at Higgin’s Farm Saturday, June 11th, the Epiphany families will gather at Harrison & Susan’s farm in Ashland for a celebration and cookout. Chapter 11 men’s group is hosting this event and will provide hot dogs and hamburgers, rolls and condiments. Others can bring a “pot luck” dish to share.
Bring your comfortable walking shoes, folding chair and bug repel-lent of choice. Directions and time will be sent out closer to the date. In the event of rain, we will still have the cookout in the par-ish hall.
Rector’s Message
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, I am honored and delighted to have been called as your new Rector. It has been a joy getting to know the members of the search committee, and the vestry. I am looking forward to meet-ing all of you, and getting to know you all. Every conversation I have had with a member of the parish has made it clear just how much this community means to its people. They have described Epiphany as a “home” and as a “sanctuary”. They have told me about how this place, and its people have supported them. How it has given them opportunities to learn about Jesus Christ, and to share the love of God with the world. My hope, and my prayer, is that I as your new Rector will do all that I can to help strengthen, and deepen the work that you all give so much dedication to. That the Grace of God which you have found at Epiphany, can be shared with all those in search of, and in need of Jesus Christ. I am eager to hear your stories, and learn more about the wonderful history of Epiphany. My door is always open. Yours in Faith, Rev. Andrew Charles Reinholz

REACHING OUT TO OUR NEIGHBORS — A BLESSING
Despite our difficulties making initial connections with the Hispanic community in our neighbor-hood, we have been blessed with being “discovered” by Augustine Kipligat newly arrived in our neighborhood from Kenya. Augustine successfully applied for immigration, chose the Richmond area, and moved into an apartment near Epiphany with little more than the clothes he brought and a laptop computer.
His wife, Loyce, 3 year old daughter Faith, and 3 month old son Francis will arrive on June 6. Augustine has a nursing degree from Africa and will take the Virginia licensing exam on June 20. In the meantime, a number of Epiphany folks have been lending a hand to help Augustine get his apartment furnished, get set up with access to Lamb’s Basket, with health insurance for the children and with driving practice. Thanks to Epiphany, his family will arrive to a comfortable apartment. The Kipligat family is Catholic, but it’s certain that we will see them occasionally. By mid-August they should be fully established. Prior to that time, the most helpful thing we could do would be to provide occasional transportation to buy groceries or to doctor’s appointments. Augustine also needs some additional driving practice. If you would like to help, please call Scott Blackwell.

Additionally a presen-tation map of the garden has been created and Stacy Mitchell is helping the committee with the colorization. We thank Stacy for her assistance as this task will bring life to the map. Her talents are so welcomed! We hope to have both of these pro-jects completed this summer. Please walk through the gardens to observe the improvements that have been made recently to honor those who rest perpetually. We also, welcome your assistance in the upkeep of this important Ministry. Please see a committee member for details.

Stewardship Committee News
The Stewardship Committee met May 11th for dinner that was a celebration and thank you of last year’s good work from the committee and to welcome our new members. Carol Campus has decided to step down now that she is on the Vestry and Pastoral Care Committee. Jessica Iseman has graciously agreed to fill Carol’s spot. At dinner we discussed the final results of the campaign and how we are doing year to date. The next meeting is tentatively schedule for June 8th. At the June meeting we will begin developing our plan for the 2017 stewardship campaign. If you would like to join the Stewardship committee please let me know – [email protected] or 804-262-3293 Ann Henderson – Stewardship Chair Stepping out in Faith Malachi 1: 6b - 8 But you say, “How have we despised your name?” By offering polluted food upon my altar. But you say, “How have we polluted you?” by saying that the Lord’s table may be despised. When you offer blind animals in sacrifice is that not evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick is that not evil? Present that to your governor, will he accept you or show you favor? says the Lord of hosts. Tithing is not only about the financial support we give the church and charities that are near and dear to us. It is the giving of ourselves. Here are some questions to ask ourselves: are you truly giving God your best today? Are you choosing your best attitude? Are you giving Him your best when you are dealing with others? Are you giving Him your best when you set your priorities? Do others see His best in you? Do you give your best at work? We always want God’s best for us and yet we often overlook giving our best to Him in all that we do. Whether we are serving in church or a restaurant or we are at home caring for our children or grandchildren, in our finances, in our relationships, no matter what it is we need to make sure that we are giving God our best. God loves us so much and He wants His best for you, but He also wants your best from you. He wants you to serve Him in a way in all that you do so others will see Him in you! Ask Him today to show you if there is something you could change to better serve Him! The best is yet to come! Blessings, Ann

For Your Reading Enjoyment….
When God Created Fathers by Erma Bombeck
When the good Lord was creating fathers He started with a tall frame.
And a female angel nearby said, “What kind of father is that? If You’re going to make children so close to the ground, why have You put fathers up so high? He won’t be able to shoot marbles without kneeling, tuck a child in bed without bending, or even kiss a child without a lot of stooping.”
And God smiled and said, “Yes, but if I make him child-size, whom would children have to look up to?”
And when God make a father’s hands, they were large and sinewy.
And the angel shook her head sadly and said, “Do You know what You’re doing?” Large hands are clumsy. They can’t manage diaper pins, small buttons, rubber bands on ponytails or even remove splinters caused by baseball bats.”
And God smiled and said, “I know, but they’re large enough to hold everything a small boy empties from his pockets at the end of a day…yet small enough to cup a child’s face in his hands.”
And then God molded long slim legs and broad shoulders.
And the angel nearby had a heart attack. “Boy, this is the end of the week, all right,” she clucked, “Do you realize You just made a father without a lap? How is he going to pull a child close to him without the kid falling between his legs?”
And God smiled and said, “A mother needs a lap. A father needs strong shoulders to pull a sled, balance a boy on a bicycle, or hold a sleepy head on the way home from the circus.”
God was in the middle of creating two of the largest feet anyone had ever seen when the angel could contain herself no longer. “That’s not fair. Do you honestly think those large boats are going to dig out of bed early in the morning when the baby cries? Or walk through a small birthday party without crushing at least three of the guests?”
And God smiled and said. “They’ll work. You’ll see. They’ll support a small child who wants to ‘ride a horse to Banbury Cross,’ or scare off mice at the summer cabin, or display shoes that will be a challenge to fill.”
God worked throughout the night, giving the father few words, but a firm, authoritative voice; eyes that saw everything, but remained calm and tolerant.
Finally, almost as an afterthought, He added tears. Then He turned to the Angel and said, “Now are you satisfied that he can love as much as a mother?”
The angel shuteth up.
Happy Father’s Day!

Well we have finished the Gospels and Acts and are heading into the epistles with a heavy dose of Paul at the beginning. It is very different reading from what we have been doing: complex reasoning instead of parables, theology instead of story and rules and regulations instead of healing and feeding. It will be tough going at times and there will be passages that will offend us.
On the other hand, some of the most beautiful words ever written are in these epistles, I Corinthians 13 and Romans 8 for example. What Paul and the others are attempting in these writings is to give shape and understanding and direction to a new thing on the earth, the church, which is about to change the world. There are powerful ideas in these epistles. What are they?
In reading the epistles I find it helpful to identify the big ideas. Find the verses stating the main themes and then the supporting passages. Keep the main idea before you; often it is the supporting passages where things get difficult to swal-low.
What we will be encountering in this remaining part of the New Testament is the early church trying to answer the questions, “what is the meaning of Jesus’ life?” How would you answer that question? How are we answering it?
“Making the love of God real” is a good start. Who knows where it will lead.
Bless you, all of you,
Harrison
