Orion Corporation Converting to Agilent OpenLAB
supported by Agilent personnel in Finland, Europe
and the United States.
Reporting was an area of particular interest. Orion
was using multiple applications to create their final
reports. Standard reports were done from the
CDS, but advanced reports such as dissolution
testing had to be executed in MS Excel. With this
setup, Orion had different reports in style, format
and content and working process to get the final
analytical reports was inefficient.
With the new OpenLAB Intelligence Reporter
reporting module, Orion can now get all reports in
the same format right after acquisition is
completed from a fully validated application.
Report templates for standard and advanced
reports were developed from Agilent in close
cooperation with Orion. The new OpenLAB
Intelligence Reporter saves the customer many
hours of manual interactions and reviews.
The pilot also demonstrated how OpenLAB could
work with Orion balance systems and their LIMS
application, further improving efficiencies of the
Orion sample testing workflow. Finally, the pilot
gave Orion a chance to give input on workflow
enhancements. This input has lead to an updated
release of OpenLAB ICM that was released in time
to meet the Orion implementation schedule. “The
input on workflow from the Orion team, matched
the feedback from other customers, allowing us to
provide a better solution for our OpenLAB
installed base as well as new customers”, said
Bruce von Herrmann, VP and GM of Agilent’s
Software and Informatics Division.

T he pharmaceuticals business of Orion
Corporation was originally seeking to
consolidate two data systems for approximately
150 Chromatographs (70% Agilent, 30% Waters).
After Agilent demonstrated the capabilities of
OpenLAB, Orion managers saw opportunities to
dramatically increase efficiencies beyond the
chromatography data systems (CDS) in their
manufacturing and R&D sites across Finland. The
result is a $1.63 million USD contract for an
OpenLAB solution to be integrated throughout the
Orion sample testing workflow. The system began
implementation in December 2008.
“The benefits of operating all our LCs on a single
data system was obvious to us through simplified
training requirements and easier protocol
development and working processes,” said Niina
Savola, CDS Project Manager Orion. Our Agilent
representative showed us that we could solve this
problem and uncover many more opportunities to
increase efficiency by addressing our labs’ business
processes.
“OpenLAB’s Instrument Control Manager (ICM)
opened the door for the discussion, but it was the
Business Process Manager (BPM) that captured the
customer’s interest: automating data handling,
information flow, the approval process and report
generation and retrieval,” said Nigel Moorhouse,
EMEA PSO Delivery Manager, Agilent.
Agilent’s Project Services Organization had
provided technical support to Orion for a number
of years, and a high level of trust grew between the
two companies. Agilent proposed a pilot OpenLAB
project in two Orion sites, so bench analysts, lab
management, IT administrators and executives
could explore the functionality and performance of
the system. The pilot was implemented and

A gilent has refreshed the drivers for its
flagship LC modules, and the still
popular 6890 Series GC, to offer more rugged
control with improved usability. The new LC
driver offers more complete control over
currently supported LC modules and also adds
more modules to the supported instrument
list than before. The new 6890 driver also
offers more complete and tighter control over
the Agilent 6890 Series GC.
Modules like the FPD, PTV and Volatiles inlet
are now fully controlled by the system. Both
have improved graphical interfaces to
enhance the usability and have received
extremely positive feedback.
The new drivers are available for EZChrom
Elite version 3.3.1, and for OpenLAB ICM
version 3.3.2 SP1.
New Drivers Available for the Agilent LC and 6890 GC - Jon Welsh, Product Manager
T wo new resources are available to
explain the options available for
integrating EZChrom Elite with your
company’s corporate LIMS and the benefits
of doing so. The first is a white paper, titled
“Interfacing EZChrom Elite to LIMS” (5989-
9894EN). This paper explains the three main
options available for integration. It details the
ranges of integration, and the benefits gained
at each level starting at simple file based
interfacing with standard EZChrom
functionality, available tools from partners to
customer programming interfaces.
The second paper available is a
case study for LyondellBasel
(5989-9893EN). LyondellBasel
implemented a custom interface
between their LIMS and EZChrom
Elite and now realize the benefit of
6.4 man/years of labor saved
annually, along with a significant
decrease in errors on the 450,000
samples that are run per year. If you
wish to download these papers,

L ast fall the Agilent Software &
Informatics group formed a team to
work closely with customers running
OpenLAB ICM. Based on customer feedback,
changes enhancements were made in the
software to make it better fit their workflow
of a modern chromatography laboratory. The
result of that collaboration is the release for
OpenLAB 3.3.2 Service Pack 1.
This release in November 2008, addresses
more than 45 enhancements and open issues
based on direct feedback from OpenLAB
customers. This update also enhances the
new Agilent standard instrument interface
layer to allow the use of new Agilent
instrument drivers for the 1100/1200, 7890
and 6890. These new drivers offer a
significant improvement in usability and
ruggedness to the system.
An overview of some of the enhancements:
With the service pack, the workflow of
acquiring and reprocessing multiple runs
has been enhanced to require less
interaction, less revisions, and less
documentation to review the changes to
the data over time.
More reportable items for documenting
the revision history of results.
A new feature allowing the ability to lock
down a validated method in content.
The ability to maintain the instrument
acquisition set points permanently in the
data file.
Immediate updates of any changes to a
running sequence across the network.
Plus many others.
Please contact your Agilent representative for
more information.

T he 35900E Dual-Channel Interface with
Modular Input/output is now available
on EZChrom Elite v3.3.1 and v3.2.1 and is the
replacement of the SS420x. This 24 bit analog
to digital conversion module provides remote
acquisition for up to 2 independent data
channels. Designed for laboratory use, the
35900E is LAN based and works with almost
any type of analog-signal generating
chromatography detector. The 35900E can be
added to any instrument configuration or be
setup standalone. It can also work
simultaneously with SS420x A/D converter.
The 35900E integrates well in EZChrom Elite
Client/Server networks. However, limitations
apply for certain AIC models and are
summarized in the table shown below.
The SS420x is discontinued and no longer
available for purchase. Agilent intends to
maintain support of the SS420x on forward
versions of EZChrom Elite.

EZChrom Elite Now Supports the 35900E A/D - Cheada Lao, EZChrom Elite Product Manager
The new AIC models numbers are G6768AA
for EZChrom Elite and G6769AA for OpenLAB
ICM. Equipped with a faster 2.33GHz Core
Duo processor and 2 Gbytes of Ram, the
enhanced Agilent instrument drivers. The
new AIC models allow any needed
modifications, such as virus protection, to be
added to support corporate IT standards.
B ased on customer feedback, a new
model of the Agilent Instrument
Controller (AIC) was introduced last
November. This newest AIC model replaces
the currently shipping AIC5000 and is based
on the standard bundle PC shipped with all
Agilent software and offers improved
performance needed by newer instrument
drivers. Being based on a standard PC it now
offers the ability to better fit into the rigorous
standard needed by corporate IT groups.
