Random Thoughts
THE TRUE AND REAL THINGS IN LIFE ARE ALWAYS SIMPLE,NATURAL AND LIFE SUPPORTING
(I Prize Winning Speech - Inter School Oratorical Competition)
It is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all,” these are thewords of Laura Ingalls Wilder.
The simple things in life are like those stars that shine on a clear night. They’re always there, surrounding us, offering their subtle magic; however, it’s not everyday that we stop to look at them and remember that they exist.
It’s strange that the simplest things which are about getting in touch with ourselves, with our natural environment and our mind have become the hardest to achieve. Themodern working lives tend to turn that on its head.
By the way, what are these simple things? They are the natural things like Sleeping Eating Enjoying the flowers, the sunshine,
the rain Reading a good book and so on. These very things are most likely to bring us anabundance of joy and happiness and shape our life for the better in most ways. Laughingout loud, breaking into a dance at your favorite song or music, saying thank you and sorrywithout a hint of sarcasm or ego, cracking a joke, forgiving a slight instantly, trying toforget it too, finding time for those close to you, sharing food, knowledge and happinessare the natural things gifted in our lives. This is the reality. This is the ultimate truth whichbrings us happiness because happiness comes as a result of appreciating smaller things inlife instead of crying for bigger things.
Surprisingly, as we grow up these things also become the toughest things to do.Instead, some of the easiest ones in our daily lives right now, include sleep deprivation, irregular meals locking ourselves up in the concrete jungle, be it during rain or sunshine, staring at computer screens or watching senseless TV dramas.
45
Confucius was right in saying that “Life is really simple, but we insist on making itcomplicated.”
Man, in search of simplicity, has made life more complicated than ever. The simplerour way of life the fewer worries we have and the fewer mistakes we make. However, everyone is free to complicate life as much as they want. We all have the right to takerisks, project our dreams and to have as wide and varied social circle as we want.
But we hardly realize that if we mess up with something as simple and as importantas breathing, we might get into serious trouble. Just in case we miss out a single event inour daily simple schedule like not getting enough sleep, do we really feel like ourselves,?No. That’s the importance of simple things and the power of their reality.
Not all people know how to enjoy the simple things that life offers.. Perhapssome are unable to see them, while others do not appreciate them and are more inclinedtoward material attachment, for instant gratification, which sadly does not last... the onlythings which last, which are true and real in life are the simpler ones.
These are not necessarily as easy to do as we would like but when done can bringin wonders as they are highly life supporting. Smelling the flowers, noticing the dew, enjoyingthe sunshine is only a matter of mindset, to appreciate what nature gives. Eating andsleeping regularly is a matter of making routines and following them. Reading is a matterof setting time aside for an affordable luxury that helps the mind to grow.
I would like to conclude my speech by saying that having big goals are reallyimportant. However, if we get too caught up in the final destination, we tend to ignore thejourney filled with simple things. Sometimes the journey is more important than thedestination. So it’s better to be mindful and pay more attention to the simple things in lifebecause One day we will wake up and realize that, in reality, they were the big things.

A right thought is one which in its nature, isharmonious and useful to the thinker and his
surroundings. – H.H.Maharishiji
There are many clues that indicate where you and I fit on the smart scale, but nonemore indicative than the quality of the choices we make. Over time, our choices areexternal indications of how well we think.
Many of our choices are under the control or influence of other people. For example, many of the choices that we make at school or work each day are triggered or directedby teachers, fellow employees, customers or our general schedule for the day. However,we also make almost totally independent choices as well – whether we do ourhomework, whether we work exceptionally hard at our job/career and whether we arenice to those around us are examples. In either circumstance, we have to be good thinkersif we are going to make good choices in our lives.
So, the quality of the choices you make is dependent on the way you think. The kindof thoughts you have about the people around you, what you think about yourself andyour thoughts about what you want to accomplish with your life-all work together toform a way of living that governs your life and the choices that you make. In other words, the whole process of living starts in your head.
When you look for good things in other people and make an effort to think wellof them, you create a positive context for your own life.
When you think of your life as an opportunity to help others, you establish apositive environment for interacting with those around you.
When you think about worthwhile goals for your life, you create a positivereference for the choices that you make each day.
Another reality of this life-building process is that your actions affect you as muchas they do other people. Not only does the new neighbor appreciate the flowers thatyou brought over to welcome her, but you gain a certain positive feeling for having doneso. Yes, her life was made a little happier as a result of your actions, but your life wasmade happier, too.
47
In exactly the same way, but with exactly opposite results, the person who stealsfrom another is, in effect, stealing his own opportunity to feel good about himself…and, atthe same time, actually choosing to live a life that will mean little to other people. It’s a bigmistake to believe that our words and deeds only affect others. In reality, we are on thereceiving end of what we say and do as well.
So, you build your life thought-by-thought and deed-by-deed. It is through a lifetimeof thoughts and deeds that you form yourself and determine the impact your life will haveon others. These thoughts and deeds are, in reality, choices that you make about whatyou will say or the way you will act. As a result, it’s not something that happens to you,but rather how you choose to think and what you choose to do that determines the typeof person you’ll be and the level of happiness you’ll ultimately achieve. If you choose yourthoughts and deeds wisely, you are taking advantage of the opportunity you have to live ahappy and rewarding life.
After all, “Attitude is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Kindnessis a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make, makesyou.”

SPY ROBOT
There was a scientist in America. He told the public that he will make a fightingrobot. The public laughed at him . He was sad and he hated those who laughed at him. Hehated all the people who did not believe him. He wanted to rule the Earth so he madelakhs of fighting robots. He programmed robots to destroy the Earth.
When there was a meeting with the Mayor he entered the hall and killed thepeople and the Mayor. Everybody was scared because he might kill them also. His nexttarget was India.
In India there was a good and helpful scientist named Stephen J.R. He made a smalldrone “Spy Robot” to spy on the other scientists who were bad.
The bad scientist and his robot travelled with the help of a flying robot. The goodscientist’s camera drone captured the photos and immediately sent them to Dr.Stephen and the war began. The people were safe in Dr. Stephen laboratory with lasershield. The bad scientist lost the war. Dr. Stephen enquired why he hated the peopleThe man told that his name was Croninellus . He hated people because they teasedhim a lot. Dr. Stephen asked him to be his assistant and use his knowledge for thewelfare of the world. He also assured him that his good inventions would fetch himname and fame and he would be an asset to the world. The scientist agreed to change hisnegative thoughts and work for Dr. Stephen.

Can we survive without T.V and mass media??
Everywhere, everyday, exciting things are happening. Each day is filled with news.People learn news and views by watching television or listening to radio. The press, mediaand television play a big role in the life of the society. They inform, educate and motivatepeople. They also influence the way people look at the world and make them changetheir views.
Mass media plays a vital role in organising public opinion. Mass media can be used forvarious purposes ; advocacy, both for business and social concerns. This can includeadvertising, marketing, propaganda, public relations and political communications.Television plays a very essential role in people’s day to day life. Television provides uswith information regarding political world, news channels, kids programs, talk shows, quizzes and a lot more. Now suppose you want to know what’s happening in the politicalworld, but for that you don’t have to turn on the TV sit for hours together and watch it.The enormous database available online, you can probably find all the answers to yourquestions anywhere, anytime. Imagining a life without mass media is something impossible.
Television steers us through our life. Jess Scott once quoted,
“People are sheep and TV is the Shepherd”
Media is the most powerful tool for communication in all developing and developedcountries. It is the way of promoting the right things in the right way or to turn any situationand create disturbance. It is also a strong way to spread a strong message to the worldabout the right and the wrong. Mass media has a profound impact on our culture. It hasput down the boundaries between the individuals as well as of countries and has createdglobalisation. Through this, we get to know different nations, their nature and their lifestyle.
In shorts mass media mirrors what others do. It is further a storehouse of information. One way or the other, technology affects almost everything we do today and it influencesmost of our plans for the future. The media surrounds us. Our everyday lives are saturatedby the Internet, TV, radio, movies, games, newspapers, magazines and a lot more. In the21st century, thanks in the part to the proliferation of mobile devices we get to navigatethrough a vast media environment. Yet our intimate familiarity with the media often allowsus to take them for granted. It’s like the air we breathe, ever present yet really considered. So, it’s not just hard but also impossible to live without mass media in today’s world.

FIGHT AGAINST PLASTIC POLLUTION
In the last decade, plastic has affected the health and life of human beings verybadly. Some incidents have attracted the attention of the whole world and put a questionmark about the use of plastic in daily life. Plastic pollution is caused due to the accumulationof the waste plastic material in the environment. Plastic is a non-biodegradable substance. It doesn’t get disposed in the soil or water and its effect is worse when burnt. It’s achallenge to dispose it off. It remains in the environment for hundreds of years and causesair, water and land pollution. It’s hazardous for the humans, animals as well as the plants.Several animals, birds and marine creatures die due to plastic pollution.
Plastic plates, bags, glasses and other materials are readily available in the market. These are economical and easy to use. People prefer using these use-and-throw utensilsduring gatherings and parties as it shuns the hassle of clearing and cleaning the utensilslater. It continues to remain in the environment and harms us adversely.
Not just plastic utensils and carry bags, furniture and various other things madeout of plastic are also used extensively world over. It’s high time we realise the harmfuleffects of plastic pollution and contribute our bit towards bringing it down.
There are many Eco-friendly alternatives that can be used to avoid the adverseeffects of plastic on health and on the environment. These alternatives include swappingof polythene for cloth, glass, reusable shopping bags, paper bags, non-woven bags, aluminumfoil and containers, wooden cutlery, paper cups, etc. The use of plastic bags must be bannedthroughout the world in order to make earth a better place to live.

MY AMBITION
When I grow up, I want to become a Neurologist. I have heard many incidentsabout people having problems with their brain. People suffer from problems like memoryloss, strokes, tumor, etc. While some find a cure, some do not. My grandmother says, there were traditional methods by which they used to cure most of these brain diseases. But, today we do not know many of these methods and patients are going through verylong term, painful and expensive treatments. I want to do research and bring back thesemethods and modify them with the help of new technologies, so that I can help otherswith my medicines.

THERE IS A WISDOM OF THE HEAD & A WISDOM OF THE HEART(State Level I Prize Winning Essay)
The head and the heart are consistently in conflict in our lives. They both yield awisdom, each with a different outlook on life. The wisdom of the head refers toknowledge- the factual study of the world and the relentless reasoning of our minds. It ismaterialistic in nature and involves the analysis of cause and consequence. It consists offinding various ways to the same solution. Knowledge has to be theoretically stated andpractically applied to be of use. It is the result of the study of the surroundings. It can bedeveloped from experience.
The cut throat competition in every field is a proof that the world runs madlyafter this wisdom. But, is this the ultimate wisdom?
Wisdom of the heart, on the other hand, is the instinctive part. It arises from theheart that follows passion with compassion. It leads us to find the nobility in compassion, beauty in empathy and grace in forgiveness. The wisdom of heart arises from the feelingthat we are humanity – a force of life housed in a million bodies.
Spiritually, it is the place where the universal joy arises. It is the wisdom ofknowing the purpose of life. It shows us the righteous path. It is independent of oursurroundings. It illuminates us from within.
Dickens himself says,“A loving heart is the truest wisdom”
It can be hidden in the smile of a child, the eyes of the old, the words of our wellwishers and the deeds of a samaritan. When we stand up for the weak, help the struggling, refrain from hurting others, share the burden of the troubled and forgive the penitent, wetoo display a speck of this wisdom.
But in today’s world, if we are to gain wisdom, we cannot choose one and abandonthe other. As we humans are social beings, we need both to lead a happy life.
Wisdom in my opinion arises when we bring together compassion, heartfulness, imagination and knowledge synergetically. One without the other can lead to dangeroussituations. For instance, misguided compassion probes us to help the butterfly struggling
53
to come out of its cocoon. But this act, renders the wings of the butterfly useless. Thus, crippling it for life. Likewise, the misused knowledge of the Nazis lead to the destructionof numerous innocents in its wake.
Eminent personalities like Mahatma Gandhi and Albert Einstein acquired boththe wisdoms and emerged to be of great service to humanity. Leading a nation to itsliberty requires complete knowledge about events happening in every corner . Meanwhile,Einstein was the one who said,
“Only a life lived in the service of others is worth living”.
If the wisdom of the head is the chariot with the horses, the wisdom of the heartis its charioteer. Without the chariot and horses, the charioteer is of no use in the battlefield. And the horses without a charioteer will only cause chaos and lead to deaths on bothsides. But when the charioteer controls the chariot and the mighty horses dexterouslyand completely, he can lead the warrior to victory.
Thus as warriors in the battlefield called life we must realise the ratio of powerbetween them both.
“The greatest mystery, the greatest wonder of creation is that we are capable of bothrelentless reason and boundless love.”
- Krishna Udhayshankar
It is indeed true. This very essay is an example of the same: written with thewisdom of the analytical head and the wisdom of the passionate heart.
- K. Jaithri XI B

NOT ALWAYS COMFORT
Pain is in all of us, Just don’t get mad about it, Work gives us pain, But it is all for gain.
For winning, For happiness, For things to be in your possession, Oh don’t let comfort take over you, And then no gain.
Pain gives us a place in the hall of fame,Pain’s doing is not forever,But comforts’ doing is forever,Because it affects our adulthood
Chocolate gives us comfort. But it creates toothache
Through these lines.I am trying to tell you,That comfort is not the most important thing.
- K . GauthamVI A
55
OUR PARENTS ARE HERE
Our parents are here, our parents are hereWhen you are injured, please don’t worry dear,Our parents are here, true in mind and heart.
When you have no one to play with youPlease don’t worry dear,Your father is here strong and intelligent.
If you want delicious foodPlease don’t worry dear,Your mother is here,
Full of love and affection.Your parents are hereWith you forever.
- S. MonishVI A

RED, GREEN AND ORANGE
The road is not the place to playOtherwise you become an easy preyTo the vehicles that speed awayPlay it safe to be always in the fray.
Slow down when orange, stop for redBut wear helmet to protect your headSpeed thrills but it killsStay within your limit to avoid blood spill
Always stop before the white lineTo keep pedestrians nice and fineRemember to go only when it is greenEven though you may be in your teen
Don’t succumb to the fit of road rageYou might have to spend time in a cage,Breaking the rules might make you coolBut ultimately you end up being a fool.
- P. Gautham V C

HAPPY SIGNS
The wiggle of an ear
Just as you near.
A tilt of the head
From something you said.
Tail wagging –making a breeze
A sure sign you really please.
Jump up-turn around
Happy signs without sound. - K. Anushree

A SISTER JUST LIKE YOU
I just want you to know
You mean the world to me
Only a heart as dear as yours
Would give so unselfishly
The many things you’ve done
All the times what you were there
Helps me know deep down inside
Even though I might not say
I appreciate all you do
Richly blessed is how I feel
Having a sister just like you ! - K. Anushree
