HOUSEPLANTHELPERMarch 2010

The Houseplant Helper is a vacuum

sealed vessel that holds water and

gradually dispenses it into the soil,

useful for both committed food

gardeners and lazy amateurs. Even

experienced gardeners need help

watering plants while away from home

for long periods of time.

Once placed alongside a plant, the

root system absorbs water from the

Houseplant Helper, displacing it with air.

PEAT & PINE RETAIL CONCEPT

February-March 2010

Collaboration with three colleagues

A gallery-inspired boutique shop for

yard and garden supplies, catering to

high end “prosumer” customers who

are willing to pay a premium for quality

and expertise.

The final concept’s spacious layout and

modular storage allow staff to easily

change the look and feel with each

coming season. The ‘logo’ wall will

be seen from the street and a custom

hanging system creates both a product

display and personifies the brand itself.

CACTUS: COLLAPSIBLEBOOT DRYER

November 2009

Cactus is a collapsible boot rack made

of maple and sheet metal. The form of

boot rack references the dryness of the

desert and can be set against both floor

and wall vents, unlike most models in the

market.

Although a common item found in almost

every Canadian home, boot dryers are

often hidden away after use because

they are considered unflattering objects

in the home. By using more valued

materials, the product is elevated from a

“throwaway” to cherished home décor.

BOOT DRYERS CAN BE PRETTY, TOO.

Page 8: T Jason Ham Portfolio2012

MODELTESTINGGOALPROBLEMThe final model was made of materials and

processes that can be sourced locally at

a reasonable production cost, with easily

replaceable fasteners.

Foamcore mockups were used to test the

scale and form of the product, while wet

boots were hung on sticks overtop of vents

to prove the effectiveness of a boot dryer

that does not directly ‘funnel’ air into boots.

The ‘image’ of the product can be improved

by focusing on 3 main attributes. Cactus packs

into a box just an inch thick and because it

has been given a more attractive form, it can

be left out all winter.

Plastic boot dryers direct air from floor

vents into wet boots. The perceived value

of the product is very low. While durable,

they often break because they are thrown

to the back of the closet.

A pendant that glows when a text

message is sent or received by its

wearer: ‘Signal’ is an experiment in

social behaviour.

Once onlookers associate the glow of

the necklace with the cellphone of the

wearer, they can begin to make their

own hypothetical backstories about a

complete stranger, adding an additional

layer of mystery for peoplewatchers

in public spaces. Who is this stranger

texting? What are they discussing? Why

does she look so mad?

Signal takes private, invisible discourse

and converts it to something seen,

while still keeping the content a secret.

(As a bonus, Signal is a great way

for people to detect incoming text

messages when the wearer’s phone is

deep within a purse or backpack!)

Page 11: T Jason Ham Portfolio2012

Signal is lit by two surface mounted LEDs

in each “prong” of the pendant. Signal

only drains its battery when the magnetic

necklace clasp is joined to form a full circuit.

The pendant flashes when incoming signals

are sent to a nearby cellular device. Using

a dipole antenna, radiowaves can act as a

switch that only turns on when signals are

present. The pendant’s metal enclosure

restricts the antenna strength so that it only

flashes in response to the wearer’s phone.

CIDSA CARD REDESIGN

November 2010

For Carleton Industrial Design Student’s Association

The focus of the concept was to make

each card feel unique while retaining a

common theme.

The triangle motif has since been

adopted as the official logo of the

student association.

“YOU’RE MORE THAN JUST A NUMBER IN OUR BOOKS.”

Designing and executing the look and

feel of a website dedicated to the

honours thesis work of a the 2012

graduating class of Carleton industrial

designers.

By first establishing key use scenarios

based on identifying (and maybe

eventually hiring) new graduates based

on work seen at the show, my team was

able to craft an efficient yet intuitive

interface while following design

guidelines provided by a separate

graphic design team.

Flare Communicator is a voIP softphone

for both audio and videoconferencing.

It is targeted to businesspeople that set

up conference calls using complicated

protocols. Flare makes things simpler

for the end user by using familiar

metaphors and illustrating relationships

between contacts.

While not involved in designing the interface from the start, I aided in ideation of new product features that are yet to be released.
