Tū KahikaFoundation Year Health Sciences Scholarship

Tū Kahika is a scholarship for young Māori students who aspire to study towards a career in health. Tū Kahika students are supported into and through the University of Otago’s Foundation Year Health Sciences course. This is to prepare for further tertiary study the following year in either Health Sciences First Year (HSFY) or other health-related programmes. Up to 20 Māori students are selected for the Tū Kahika Scholarship each year.

Tū Kahika students receive:

• Guaranteed accommodation in a University of Otago residential college (Arana or Studholme)• $10,000 towards residential college fees• Comprehensive support into university study and student life, with dedicated support staff

and mentors (previous Tū Kahika scholarship recipients)• Extra academic support (tutorials and workshops in addition to Foundation Year tutorials)• Preparedness for further tertiary health sciences study• Professional and cultural development

What will I study? Foundation Year Health Sciences course

The Foundation Year Health Sciences course prepares students for success in the University of Otago’s Health Sciences First Year (HSFY) or other health sciences study. Tū Kahika students participate in lectures, labs and tutorials with other Foundation Year students in outstanding facilities on the University of Otago campus. The course runs across two terms, from February to October each year, and includes: physics, chemistry, biology, academic English, maths, and health.

Where will I live? Guaranteed accommodation

Tū Kahika students live alongside one another in either Arana or Studholme residential colleges. Both colleges provide excellent accommodation, great food, and social activities to support students’ transition to university and their academic achievement. Located on campus, the colleges provide an amazing atmosphere within walking distance of all campus facilities.

How will I be supported?Financial, academic, pastoral and cultural support

The Tū Kahika Scholarship provides financial, academic, cultural and pastoral support for selected students to complete the Foundation Year Health Sciences course. The scholarship pays $10,000 towards residential college fees. Students are supported by a dedicated Kaiārahi (Student Co-ordinator) who works closely with Foundation Studies, Arana and Studholme staff, and the University of Otago’s Te Huka Mātauraka (Māori Centre) to co-ordinate additional academic and cultural support for Tū Kahika students. Students are also provided professional development opportunities to better understand health career pathways and options. Tū Kahika students join the whānau of previous Tū Kahika scholarship recipients (tuākana/mentors) who have completed the Foundation Year course and are studying towards their degrees or graduates working in the community as qualified health professionals.

EligibilitySuccessful applicants must:

• Have Māori whakapapa

• Show a commitment to Māori health and Māori development

• Be in Year 13, or a recent school-leaver

• Show a commitment to pursue health sciences study and a career in health

• Have motivation and determination to succeed

• Preferably have secondary school science (minimum level 2) in chemistry, physics or biology.
