In 2005 the Royal Swedish Yacht Club, KSSS celebrates its 175 yearanniversary, and the Swedish Sailing Federation, SSF its 100 year. This will be celebrated during a couple of weeks, filled with races, events, and recreation. The unique Swedish and northern Europeancultural treasure of motor and sailing yachts will give the participantsand spectators many unforgettable moments.

Together we will experience the fan-tastic outer Stockholm archipelago withit’s thousands of islands. We meet upon July 2nd to sail in this exhilaratingenvironment, where the open seameets the glittering rocks polished

thousands of years by the inland ice. Each night we will find a sheltered natu-ral harbour of a unique island. MaybeLandsort with its 17th century light-house, Utö with its 12th century ironmine and picturesque village, Fjärdlång,

Ornö, Nämndö or Huvudskär with itsold customs office and old fisherman’shuts in the outermost archipelago.Every island has its own exciting history.

During the 3-day convoy we willvisit interesting cultural and historicalplaces, meet the locals who can tell usabout life on the islands in the old daysand today. We will get to know excitingpeople and places, manners and tradi-tions, and learn about life with the sea.

To sail among the islands is of coursealso a social event, meeting peoplefrom all over Europe with the sameinterests and love for the sea. We willadmire each others boats, enjoy eachothers company, and we will talk aboutour favourite subject – wooden boats.

The convoy ends on July 5th bysailing in a parade into SaltsjöbadenHarbour, where we meet the otherparticipants of the Classic Boat Event.

On Tuesday July 5th and WednesdayJuly 6th the two jubilees will be celebrat-ed with lots of activities on the water-front of the fashionable Grand Hotel. Inthe large Marina we will first honour theyachts finishing the Classic Visby Race.Highlights in the Marina with smallerclassic boats like Stars, Dragons, theone-designs as well as races on theother side of the small peninsula willcreate an exciting atmosphere.

The sail-in of all the unique motorand sailing yachts will be the naturalhighlight of the sailing season. TheMarina will be crammed with a culturaltreasure seldom seen, including thecream of classic yachts, to the amuse-ment of both skippers, crews and a

large public. In addition to the boatshow the days are filled with numerousattractions. Veteran air shows will makeyou believe gravity has vanished, vete-ran cars concours d’elegance will makeyesterday live again, but also music, marine markets, artists and handicraftexhibitions will be the basis for thesocial get-together. At night picnics will

be spread on and about the Marina aswell as on the surrounding lawns. Thefestivities will continue till sunset andcommence again at sunrise only a fewhours later. For those who brought theirsailors uniform, a ball in the Golden Hallof the Grand Hotel fits fine.

Great Daysin Saltsjöbaden

We Bring the Classic Visby Race into Life again. The first week of July will be in the spiritof tradition, as the classic sea race”Visbyseglingen” will be revived. Thefirst Visby Race took place in 1908. Inaddition to the sometimes tough andexciting conditions offshore, the start ofthe race in Visby was accompanied withgreat feasts and social high-life in theMarina. This is a tradition worth main-taining. We also wish to add to theenormous cultural treasure of the medi-eval very old and totally unique

”Hanse” City of Visby. The Visby Race was the forerunner

of the Round Gotland Race. In 1908 tenyachts participated in two classes, andthe sail to Nynäshamn was very drama-tic in a westerly storm. Many boatsgave up and took shelter in emergencyports. This stormy race acted as a deter-rent for offshore racing for many yearsto come. A pause was made until 1923,where after annual races were helduntil 1937. The races often brought

together largeSkerry cruisers,R-boats, ketchesand yawls. Foryounger sailorsthe names of thegreat yachts par-ticipating duringthat golden era of sailing bring wonder-ful thoughts into life. Some of them stillsail so with some luck we might seethem participate in 2005.

In Sandhamn – the eternal sailing centre– the excitement is at its peak duringtwo days in July. On the 8th severalraces take place at different courses inthe proximity of the island Sandön,where the village Sandhamn is situated. On the 9th the large fjord of Kanholms-fjärden will be filled with white sails. The races at Kanholmsfjärden will be

performed in accordance with old KSSStraditions. The classic start by a gunfrom the pavilion at Gastholmsgrundetwill be used. By the way, the sail racesat Kanholmsfjärden were in the 19thcentury the largest sports event in thecountry. Large crowds followed theraces from boats and shores. Swedeshad at the time neither seen a football,

an ice hockey stick nor a tennis ball, and passenger ships competed ongetting spectators on board.

The shores and boats will surelyalso this time be crowded with spect-ators when the beautiful and shinymahogany hulls cut the water in a fightfor the gunshot.

Breathtaking Jubilee Races in Sandhamn

Every inch of the Göta Kanal is an exci-ting experience. The 190 km long canalruns across half Sweden into the heartof the country and into the largest lakein Europe, Lake Vänern. With its 58locks Göta Kanal will become the meet-ing place for all veteran boats in July.

Along the whole cruise, the localsailing clubs will arrange lots of festivi-ties and events. Where we stay over-night, waterfront events, mingle eve-nings in pubs, and music will bearranged for the enjoyment of the spec-tators and the convoy. The Canal is avery popular goal for both local andforeign spectators, who will enjoy see-ing what boats looked like in grand-dad’s days. The Sailing through thewelcoming Swedish landscape is reallyan experience, and the cultural inheri-tage in the small cities and villagesalong the way will make a lifelongimpression on everyone. To visit thecharming stony roads, the old houses, and the old glassworks facilities will addto the experience. Of course we willstop in the cities along the way and

learn about their history, as well as visitthe castle of Karlsborg on the shore ofSweden’s second largest lake Vättern.Enjoy being able to drink water straightout of both Lake Vättern and Vänern, before entering the last part of thejourney on the river Göta Älv down toGothenberg, where you meet the saltwater again in the Kattegatt.

KSSS Marina in Saltsjöbaden lies at the gateto the archipelago. Saltsjöbaden is a pictu-resque village 30 minutes east of StockholmCity. Here the Marina with its guest harbouris next door to both the KSSS clubhouse, the famous Grand Hotel, as well as to openfjords and wonderful sailing waters. Saltsjö-baden has been the inshore sailing centreof Stockholm for ages.

Coming from Stockholm you sailthrough the very narrow sound Baggen-stäket, and coming from the sea you sailthrough the sound Fällström to reach theopen fjord Baggensfjärden in front of theclubhouse.

The Marina has 35 guest moorings, butduring the veteran boat event, we havereserved the whole harbour in front of the

Grand Hotel for the esti-mated 200 participants. From the Marina you caneasily reach the shoppingmall with banks, food, andshops. Marina facilities as well asrecreation, amusements and restaurantsare also available.

KSSS in Saltsjöbaden – 59 degrees16.7 minutes Northand 18 degrees 19.2 minutes East

KSSS in Sandhamn – 59 degrees 17.3 minutes Northand 18 degrees 55.3 minutes EastSandhamn is situatedfarthest out in thearchipelago with only

a string of islands shel-tering it from the open

sea. Sandhamn has, sinceKSSS built its clubhouse here

in 1897, been the centre for sailingon the Swedish east coast. Sailors have formore than a hundred years enjoyed the uni-que nature and friendly sailing waters around

Sandhamn. At 60 degrees north the summernights provide a marvellous light from a sunhiding a short time below the horizon beforerising in a most exquisite sunrise.

Sandhamn is an old fishing village on theisland of Sandön. KSSS’ Marina has severalpontoons and piers in front of the oldclubhouse, which today contains a modernhotel and restaurant facility. The Sandhamnside has 350 guest moorings, marina facili-ties, After Sail, music, dancing and other

festivities. Shuttle boats will take you to andfrom Lökholmen, the more quiet side acrossthe small bay. Lökholmen has approximately150 guest moorings and is an absolutelyunique Marina with basic facilities.

Sandhamn is a gem in the Stockholmarchipelago where you return over and overagain, not only for serious racing but also toenjoy its shores, the people, restaurants andsailing atmosphere.
