Autobiographical Sketchof Willie Sprunt Newkirk Norfleet

The youngest of four children her roots were established on a farm in Duplin County, North Carolina. An appreciation of the land and the work ethic were instilled at an early age since strawberries, corn andtobacco were major crops. Believe it or not, school lessons were done by oil lamp during the primarygrades and listening to the "Hit Parad€'on radio was a favorite pastime.

A stable home and love of God and family were the gifts of parents now gone. Education at Woman'sCollege University of North Carolina in Greensboro, North Carolina and Medical College of VirginiaSchool of Nursing in Richmond, Virginia was yet another step toward a fulfilling life as wife of BenNorfleet, family physician, and mother of five very special children. Years have added the gifts ofdaughter's-in-law, a son-in-law and grandchildren.

George Bernard Shaw said that, '?erhaps the greatest service that can be rendered by anybody to thecountry and to mankind is to bring up a family."

Faith in God and family are first and foremost in Teeny Norfleet's life, but there is also time for music, sewing, cooking, skiing, sailing and trips to new and wonderful places.

ORIGIN

\luch of'the lbllowing is quoted tiom and printed bypennission ofthe Puhlications o{'the Genealogical Society ofPcnnsvlvania--fhe van Nicuwkirk. Nieukirk. NewkirkFanrilv. March. 1934 Special Number.

Thc Newkirk Farnily is an ancient one and{ike rnost other families of Teutonic origin. thenillne has undergone manv changes on its longjournev to its rnore usual. present way ofspelling with seven letters.

The first authetic record o[ any member of thisfarnilf is found in the histories of the LowerRhine regions of Germany: there being townsnamed Neukirchen in both the counties ofGrevenbroech and Moers.

The narne of Adolphus de Nieukirchen is

lnentioned in a document of the Monastery ofGehrden as early as I 153. From 1337 to 1350.

rnany of the Nervkirks were property owners intheir native places in Germany The namegererally appears as Neukirchen and, by thisnalne. there are rnany German arrivals in thiscountry. even to the present day. In 1599.

mention is made of Gottfried Neukirch andshortly before of Arnold Henrich Neukirk.professor of Theology.

One rvriter on Heraldry has contributed the

lollorving to the farnilv lore:

Van Neukirchen. called Nyvenheim

The continuous line of tltis old family of Julichbegins with Johan von Neukirchen, Lord ofNeuraidt in Oclen. who married, in 1403. Annavan N) /enheim. heiress of Gerode.

Frorn Julich the family went to the LowerRhine. acquired many hereditary offices in the

course of time: much rvealth and furnished a

nurnber of Knights and Commanders to theGennan Order. One branch rernoved to theNetherlands. while the other remained in theRhine region.

Walter Godfried van Neukirchen. calledNvvenheim. in the thirteenth generation of the

continuous genealogie. Lord of Drieberg,Kessel. Mook and Musschenberg, was. bv hisrvife. Elbertina van Tengnagel van Gillikum,

lvhom he married in 1703, the ancestor of thepresent branch of the family Iiving in France.

Thus it is seen that the family of ancientorigin had spread to three countries: Germany.Holland and France. many centuries ago.

The branch of the family to which those herepresent (descendants of Cornelisse vanNieuwkirk) trace their lineage located inHolland. but the date has not yet been

ascertained. It is the belief of the writer of thispaper. howel,er. that the family had lived inHolland for at least many hundred years beforethe American progenitor. (Gerret CornelisseVan Nieuwkirk, son of Cornelisse VanNieuwkirk,) sailed to New Netherland (in 1659)

The Nervkirk ancestors were from the low. orcoast country ofHolland. They spoke the pure

Dutch language. In their native country theyrvere agriculturists, manufacturers and

merchants....Early in the seventeenth century, the people of Holland turned their attention to

the New World. They literally came in swarns.Soon New Netherland rvas established inpractically all that country which is nowincluded in the boundaries of the State of NewYork....To this day' how often it is said that thisor that man came from good old Knickerbockerstock. That only means he lvas a descendant ofthe early Holland emigrants.

The Neu,kirks come down from one of the best

knorvn and most distinguished families of thisfine old "Knickerbocker" stock of New York.

Catherine Ann Newkirk Hanks. Memories for my Family

As a child growing up on a farm in a Christian home I remember hardships but they seemed no more thanother families. I was born in 1924, the oldest of four children, to Jessie Winstead and Lucian WhitEeldNervkirk. Daddy had started building our home after his engagement to Mother. The first months aftertheir marriage they lived in the two story farm house with Uncle Stokes and Aunt Betty until our houservas ready to b moved into. Amelia was born in 1926, Joe (Buddy) in 1928 and Teeny was born during thedepression in 1933. As the oldest much rvas expected of me in helping with my sisters and brother. Iretnember some switchings when things didn't go right and as I think back these were my first lessons inresponsibilitv.

Otrr home life rvas purely what our family provided. I remember many many times Mother at the pianoand we children standing around her singing - mostly hymns and children's songs, also Stephen Fostersongs. Another entertainment was Mother reading books to us - a chapter at a time.

The ltouse had a fireplace in the living room and of course the wood burning stove in the kitchen. Inwinter we stayed close by the heat and this drew the family together. Although there rvas a Delco plant forligltts. it really rvasn't strong enough to light Uncle Stokes' house and ours so our light was either a smallkerosene lamp or the aladdin lamp which I remember using for study in high school. If weather wasn't toocold this lamp was placed on dining table and we gathered around the table to prepare school lessons.Otherwise the lamp was on mantle over fireplace and we huddled around fire and studied. Again. as Itltink back on these ways of study, we were learning to share out of a necessity to see and stay warm. Iretnember Daddy trying to teach me the multiplication tables, his way of dividing and fractions. Yes, theyrvere different even then than my school books. I learned them or else!

All of our meals rvere eaten around dining room table. I don't remember much about sandw'iches becauserve ate biscuits that Mother made for every meal. Mother did a lot of canning during summer monthsrvhen garden was growing. In lvinter when hogs were killed she canned a lot of loose sausage. We ategrits for many meals. Never do I remember when we didn't have plenty to eat even during depressionyears when times were so hard - no cash. Mother and Daddy provided and we nerrer knew the povertyothers in the U.S. were suffering.

We ahvays had prayer before each meal. Not every day but almost Mother would read a short scripture atone tneal during the day. Sundays that scripture would be from Sunday School lesson.

With no heat in upstairs bedrooms we made all our preparations down stairs - putting on pj or gowns andsaf ing prayers. The toilet was about 50 feet or more from house in back yard. That meant using buckets bybeds during night. We didn't knorv any different so that was acceptable and never thought of as aproblem. Sltowers'/ In the sumrner time, yes. Daddy had rigged up a big barrel on a rack near back dooru, ith a curtain around. We'd dash out with towel and robe and turn on rvater that had been warmed bysun. In winter Mother had a big tub behind the kitchen stove and that u,as filled rvith heated water.Privacy was a big issue summer and winter.

Fartners depended on their children to work the fields and we four were no exception. I worked but wasn'thappy out in those fields, either chopping grass out of strawberries or rvorking in tobacco or whatwer thetask for the day. I would have much rather stayed at the house and helped Mother. That was not the plan -rve helped Mother. too. either at lunch or a.fter we finished in the fields. Tired was not tolerated in ourvocabulary. Daddy never over worked us but he was hrm.

I do not remember ever hearing dirfy language or curse words spoken in our home We were not angelsand fights and quarrels were stopped by Mother or Dad.

When I was 9 years old. one Sunday morning I asked Daddy if I could Join the church. The phrase "givenu' heart to Jesus" was not one readily used but I sincerely feel that's what I wanted to do. This rvas justan ilverage Sunday morning - no special event at church. Daddy spoke to minister when we got to churchand hc called a session rnccting just for me. Even though I knerv all those men this rvas different and veryscrious. I ansrvered the questions and rvhen I came home I wrote down the event in my Nerv Testamentthat I had received for memorizing the Child's Catechism. My next lesson from Daddy was on giving tothc church. In the Presbl'terian Church the rvord "tithe" was not used.

Whcn I u'as l2 I rernernber Mother and Daddv talking about reading through the Bible in a vear. I askedil I could. too. That rvas a large assignment and I really don't remember if I completed it.

Going to school during the week and to church on Sunday were the two things I looked fonvard to. Bothplaces had friends for me to be with so this was also my social life. At church was a big pot bellied stoveand tltis was the only heat in winter. We experienced lots of togetherness there, too.

Rcverence for elders. teachers. anyonejust a few years my senior was taught by lvlother and Daddy.addressing the person with Mr., Mrs. or Miss and using "yes Mam" or "yes Sir." - never just "yes." fusingif someone your senior came into room, offering your seat was just common courtesy and expected.

Another great inlluence in our lives was our next door neighbors in the two story farm house - UncleStokes and Aunt Betty. They did not have any children oftheir own but helped several during the courseof their lives. taking thern in to live with them for years because a parent had died or poverty had madecircumstances bad. Daddy's parents lived in WashinSon, DC and he didn't like "rvorking by the rvhistle"he said. so he rnoved in rvith Uncle Stokes and Aunt Betqv and learned farming.

A good description of what Uncle Stokes and Aunt Betty did for the Lord would be home missionaryw'ork. A ltorse and buggv was their means of transportation and they traveled up in the woods about fourrurilcs or so and started a Sunday School on Sunday afternoons for families who could rvalk nearby andcouldn't get to churclt. This rvas before I was born but I heard many stories about the blessings of thoseSunday Schools led by Uncle Stokes and Aunt Betty. Not only was the Word of God taught but there wasnruch fellowship and that could have been all until the next Sunday.

Uncle S(okes had a neighborhood store and post offrce. He would go to Magnolia with horse and wagon, bring back grocerv iterns. etc. and the mail for neighborhood. helping the neighborhood keep in staplesand rnail. As far as I know he received no remuneration for this other than grocery items he might sell.Tltere was a neighborhood one room school on the corner for elementary grades. The teacher stayed withUncle Stokes and Aunt Betty. I doubt very much if they accepted pay for boarding teacher.

I rvirs exposed to a lot of instruction from these two people. Aunt Betty kept working with me until I hadnremorized the shorter catechism. As she grew older and her sight dimmed she would call me over onSaturday afternoons to read to her the Sunday School lesson. I'm sure that was more for me than for her.

She insisted that I learn to play on the piano two hymns, "Jesus Loves Me" and "Jesus Lover of My Soul."She becarne mv piano teacher making sure I could play those two hymns in case she or Mother couldn't be

at church. Little by little I taught myself the piano notes with help from Mother and could play othersinrple pieces. Finallv in 86 grade I was able to take piano lessons from Mrs. Rogers in Magnolia for twovcars and had to stop because rvejust did not have the money for lessons.

Christrnas rvas such a rvonderful time in our home. Mother made fruit cakes, coconut cake. nut cake and

chocolate cake. Our trees came from the woods around us after many afternoons of searching for the righttree. The earliest rve could cut it was about ten days before Christmas. We didn't have much indecorations besides tinsel. I do remember one year there were real candles on the tree. The nightsjustbelore Christmas Uncle Stokes and Aunt Betty would come over and we'd stand around piano with UncleStokes playing fiddle and sing carols. Aunt Betty and Uncle Stokes rvould always play some jigs.

Morher played piano so beautifullv by ear as well as reading music. We'd corne home froln school singing

a song and she'd go to piano and start accompanying us. How wonderfi.rl it u'ould be to have inherited thatgift from Mother.

One Christmas Eve when Buddy was in high school he came in about I I p.m. from date or being rvithgr.rrs. Everyone had alreadv gone to bed and Santa had already been. The kid in him wanted to be in bed

too before Santa carne and he sure reminded us the next morning. I remember Christmas Eve playingpiano Uncle Stokes fiddle and the rest of us (l thought) standing around singrng. There rvas a knock and

.iingle bells and rvhen the door rvas opened Santa was there dressed in his red suit with bag on hisshoulder. He came in and chatted. sang with us and then had to be on his way to deliver gifts. Oh whatexcitement.

One Christmas morning - I must have been about 12 years old - Mother and Daddy left me in charge ofSistcr. Buddy and Tecny' )3 Years old) while they rvalked over to Uncle Stokes' house. Buddy had gotten aprng-pong set and we rvere playing ping-pong on dining table. Teeny must have tired of her toys for the

ne\t time I checked her she was in Mother's cakes which were stored in a large can about 2 l/2 feet tall. She had already lifted two out and tossed them on the floor. Needless to say I sure didn't want to see

Mother and Daddy come home - but they did. Yes. I was punished.

Mother and Dadd;- had no cash for toys for us during depression years even at Christmas. We always

hung stockings - usually Daddl"s and they were alwal,s filled with apple. orange. tangerine. raisins still on

branch. hard candies and nuts - Brazil nuts and walnuts. We did have presents under the tree from Auntsand Uncles living in Washington DC and Wilson, N.C.. When we were little all rvas from Santa and as we

grerv old enough to understand more rve rvere told they were gifts and thank you notes had to be written.

I u,as christened at Oak Plains Presbyterian Church as an infant. Mother played the piano for services so

(ltat rneant Daddv had the care of me and then as Amelia, Buddy and Teenv were born his job increased.

Daddl' rvas stern and disobedience meant leaving the church: some of us met in balcony: smaller childrenin norlhex or rnaybe outside in r.varm weather. A special lesson being learned was being tolerant of each

othcr. other classes. too. because we were all meeting in the same room. There was no loud talking or

running around. Because we lived on farms we were so happy to be with eaclt other to visit and going to

church rvas a happy occasion.

We had a log cabin play house in the yard between our house and Uncle Stokes'. Uncle Stokes was

inslrurnental in building this for us. That play house was so important in our lives. We never had much infurniture except what our imaginations could put together. We used it to sleep in during summer

especially if a friend or cousin was visiting. Sleeping bags were quilts.

During Buddy's teenage years an antenna was put on the roofand he and friend had a radio station ofsorrs. We still had an old radio in the house with car battery to operate it so I don't know details ofBuddy"s operation.

Shortly after I rvas born a friend came by rvith a puppy for me. I suppose I must have named him ''Bow

Worv" rvhen I started talking. He was just a yellow hound dog and faithfully followed me every where. Iu'andered quite a distance ( l/-t mile) from home one day and when they found Ine "Bow Wow" was at my

sidc Borv Worv lived to be l5 years old and had many things happen to him. He was a faithful friend toall ofus

A pennv rvas big rnone,v to us during depression years. It would buy five Hershey kisses. It rvould also buy

a "penny pencil. ' That rvas all Daddy would buy for me to use. In first grade I remember some of the class

nrares having yellow pencils with nice erasers. They also had "slick paper" *ith nice lines on it. Since"rough paper tablets" were cheaper that's what I had to use and that hard lead penny pencil would hardly

write. Those days and how Daddy managed may sound hard today - they were - but we accepted what lvas

provided.

Mother was very good at the sewing machine making oudits out of old clothes passed on. She'd use thelvrong side of the garment and we never knew the difference. It was nelv to us. The sacks that chickenfeed came in were usually pretty flower prints on cotton. Mother made dresses from those sacks.

A very short distance from our house - through the woods - a colored (black) family lived. We called themAunt Susie (and she was very old) Aunt Sarah, Susie, and Annie Ruth. Oh how I loved to go there to play. Many times I went without Mother's permission and rvhen she finally found me - by then I was hidingunder a bed - Mother had a little switch in her hand and I was punished. Norv when I rhink of the snakesin those woods no wonder Mother was upset. The Lord sure was my shepherd protecting me. When AuntSusie and Aunt Sarah died coffrns had to be made. Uncle Stokes probably made the one for Aunt Susie.Daddy made Aunt Sarah's coffrn.

April 23. 2000

Our family reunion to be held at Marie and Dale Warren's in Charlotte, NC is approaching andI r'c been asked to contnbute sorne rnemories of rnv childhood. After reading my oldest sister's memoriesthere doesn't seem to be much lefl to add. I am the second sibling of four. I can remember being bossed b1'

oldcr sistcr. Cathcrinc Ann. Shc tricd to kecp nrc frorn playing in mv favorile place - the horse trough. Ofcorlrse I'd get u'et and she rvould get in trouble.

A fond rnemory rvas sitting at Mother's knees listening to her read Uncle Remus stories. Shespent rnanv hours reading to us and teaching us songs as she played the piano.

I never knerv my paternal or maternal grandfathers as they both died before I rvas born. Mvgrandtnother Winstead. u'hom we called "Mama". lived in Wilson. NC with Aunt Stelle Swinson. Irctttctnbcr hcr as bcing frail and sick with asthma frequently'. bul rvhen able she r.vould come to visit usdrrntrg the surnnrcr for a couple of rveeks. We enjoyed hearing her plal'her accordion. rvhich is in mvpossession now. Grandmother Newkirk lived in Washington. D.C. That was so far away that we didn't seeher often. Aunt Betty and Uncle Stokes Newkirk were our substitute grandparents. We spent lots of timeuith thern as we grew up. Aunt Betty taught me the Child's Catechism and after reciting the catechismperfectlv (it had to be perfect for Aunt Betty; I received my first New Testament. Hotv proud I was.

I'd sa-v- we were nortnal kids who liked to jurnp board, jump thc rope, play hide and seek andchase light bugs and calch them al night. We got mad at each other at times. too. When Buddy got madu'itlt rne one tirne. he harnlnered tack nails in the back porch floor spelling out "sister is a bad girl " Thetucks rverc still in the floor whcn the house was sold and moved.

When I rvas five years old. I begged to go to school with Catherine Ann. She rvas in the secondgrade. Mother let me go and tvhile I rvas in her class room. I cherved on one of the flash cards. Miss Betry-

Horn. her teacher. didn't like that. Later dunng recess the boys in her class teased rne and called me "billvgoirt " I didn't go back to school again until I entered the first grade!

Motlter made all of our clothes using a pedal serving machine. One tirne she rvas serving late atnisllt to finish a dress for rne to wear to school the next day. Daddy got impatient and called out. "Baby!

Arc vou going to sew all night." Baby was daddy's nick name for mother all their married life. It wasBirbr get me this or Babv where is rny so and so. Yes. she spoiled hirn bv answering to his every rvhim.

As soort as I rvas old enough to hold a hoe. I rvas put to hoeing the garden or choppingstraw'berries. Daddy' would tell me I really knew horv to use a hoe. He knerv that rvould make me hoe thatrnuch harder. There was always something to do in the strawberry patch. If it wasn't chopping grass out.lt \\as putting out straw around the plants to keep the berries offthe ground. Then it rvas strawberryprckrng tirne. I picked strawberries for one cent a quart. When I rvas a teenager. I packed strawberries forl0 cents a crate. There rvere 24 quarts in a crate. I rvorked all day for less than a dollar a day. One da-r"

u'hile rve rvere chopping strarvberries. Buddy was in the next field plolving with Jarhead. Jarhead was a

slubborn rnule and if he took the notion he would stop nght in the middle of a row and rvould not move.Budd,v would hollow. "get up, get up." Jarhead rvouldn't move. Buddy got so mad he cned. Buddy tookcare of that situation. He got him a tobacco stick, drove a nail in the end or the stick so it protruded a littleand rvhen Jarhead wouldn't move he would give him a jab. No more trouble with Jarhead.

Budd-v" was more prone to accidents than the rest of us kids. When he rvas about fil'e years old he

ri'as rvith Daddv al the Da\n/ place rvhile Dad rvas burning off a field rvhen his pants leg caught on fire. B-v

tltc tirne Daddv could get to hirn to put out the frrc. his leg and knee u'ee burned badl1,. It took some timelor it to heal and for hirn to be able to bend his knee and walk straight.

When Buddv rvas in the 96 grade he rvas hit in the eye by accident r.vith a baseball rvhile playingat scllool. The lick front the baseball dislocated nerves in his eye resulting in Buddy seeing double in thatcvc permanenth'. This rvas devastating to all of us but Buddy took it like a soldier.

I attended Magnoha School grades I - I l. The twelfth grade was not added until a-fter Igraduated. I traveled on a school bus that had no heat or air-conditioning. on roads that rvere not paved. Inrr inter our bus would sometime get stuck in the mud causing us to arrive at school late and about frozento death. It rvould feel so good to get close to the steam heat radiator in our class room to rvarm up. In191.'i I graduated valedictorian of my class of 20 students. lvho was at Montreat College at the time read, "She did her speech just grand and we were so proud ofher. Her teacher. Mrs. Pippin, went to Daddy after it was over and told him he ought to be walking around

with his thumbs in his vest - meaning he should be proud of his smart daughter." Mother and Dad were

always supportive of their children in the schoolwork and were proud of all of our accomplishments. Inspite of their low hnancial state, they were determined that we go to college and learn to make a living forourselves.

In September 1943, at the age of 17, I left home to go to Montreat Junior College in the

mountains of N.C. What a sad day - for I knew I wouldn't be coming back home until Christmas vacation.

I rvas a home body. It took all day traveling alone by train to get to Montreat. I never will forget that firstweek-end away from home. I cried the whole week-end, as I was so home sick. If it had not been for the

letters I received from Mother, Teeny and Catherine Ann I don't think I would have been able to stick out

the first year at Montreat. Their letters gave me encouragement. I also knew Daddy didn't like quitters

and I didn't want to disappoint Mother and Dad. I was more satisfied the second year at Montreat and it',vas during that year that I decided I wanted to go into the nursing field rather than business. Aftergraduating in May from Montreat, I immediately entered in the June class of the U.S. Nurses Cadet

Corps at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. the first nine months of my training was spent on

American University campus taking college courses and drill marching. We had a tough drill offrcer that

taught us to drill like good soldiers. We were being prepared for sen'ice to our country had the war not

ended. I graduated in 1948 from Sibley Memorial Hospital nursing school and Mother and Dad were there

ro see me receive my diploma. During these three years I enjoyed visiting my sister, Catherine Ann,Grandmother. and other relatives that lived in Washington at the time.

World War II was going on during my junior and senior years in high school and college years.

Shoes and sugar lvere rationed by the government during the War. We were allowed fwo pairs of shoes a

year and f,rve pounds of sugar per person to last for four months. When I went to college, I had to take my

sugar ration card with me. Before rationing, Daddy bought sugar in 100 lb. bags. Mother kept that 100 lb.

sugar bag stored in a closet. I remember slipping in the closet with a spoon and eating sugar straight fromthe bag.

Buddy graduated from high school two years a.fter I did. He received the citizenship award his

.junior and senior years. I was still at Montreat so I missed his graduation. Mother wrote me about his

grand speech and how proud they were of him. Shortly after Buddy $aduated he came to Montreat formy graduation and I was so excited to have a member of my family to come. However, Buddy met some

young girl over at Montreat Inn he thought was cute so I didn't get to see much of him until we were on

the way home.We siblings were fortunate to have parents who not only loved , sacrificed and cared for their

children, but nursed and took care of Aunt Bettie and Uncle Stokes their last years of life. After theirdeaths Dad remodeled Aunt Bettie and Uncle Stokes' house and they moved from our childhood home

into the two story house next door. By that time Teeny rvas the only sibling left at home. It was not long

after they moved that Grandmother Newkirk and Uncle Corwin Nelvkirk moved in to live with Motherand Daddy. The same love and care was ertended to them until their deaths. There is one more quote

frorn a letter Mother wrote me while I was in college that I want to share. "You children are so dear to us

and it's our prayers daily that you all do well and stay on the straight and narow path that leads us to lifeeternal." What a legary!

Reflections by Willie Sprunt NewkirkNorfleet. April 24'h, 1986

This is being written down on my Dad's farm in Duplin County, North Carolina where I will be staylngseveral days with my Dad, Lucian WhitFreld Newkirk, who is almost 93 years old. Much has changedhere as has in my life since the baby born just across the yard 53 years ago. Yes, things have changed anda major one is the house where I was born no longer stands at its original site. This house my Dad builtfor his bride. It has found a new home site and will be renovated, renewed and liled in by new owners.Yes, my heart did twinge today as I drove up and no longer saw this home where I'd grown up withoutelectricity or running water but not feeling deprived because there was warmth, love, security and thenecessities. Being the youngest of four children and five years younger than Buddy (Joseph WhitfreldNervkirk) left me with no close playmates. I can remember being teased unmercifully and chased about theyard by Buddy. Sister (Amelia N. Zurl) and Catherine Anne (N. Hanks) surely wanted to kill us forcorning around when their dates were there. It is difficult for me to remember much of my young years -we had to break our switches from spirea bush in back yard for spankings - baths were taken in a wash tubin front of fireplace in winter or outside in summer under shower set up on u,ash house - Buddy built amerry-go-round in back yard and I remember falling offand knocking the breath out of me. There wasalso Elizabeth, a black playmate my age. There were no people close by and we looked fonnard to going toSunday school and church and maybe home with a friend afterwards or after school age having friends atschool. Christmas was special and I can still remember laying awake waiting for Santa Claus. When I wasolder I did most of the decorating and loved it. Mother would bake six or seven cakes and have them inthe dining room. Uncle Stokes (William Newkirk) who lived where my Dad lives now was my buddy. Hewould bring me candy or take me to Dr. Quinn's drugstore in Magnolia for ice cream. Aunt Betty(Robinson Newkirk) his wife thought I was too active and would offer me 10 cents to sit on a stool for l0minutes and be quiet. What effect did the words "speak when you're spoken to" have on me and it seemedthat I heard them a lot. She was the dear lady that taught me the Child's Catechism from memory andafter reciting it I was presented with my first New Testament. Oh yes, and there was the time I took AuntBetty's egg basket and broke eggs all over the kitchen floor. Yes, there was a spanking. I still have thefeeling of being surrounded by older men and women most of the time and rvas referred to as a "little oldlady."

One year during the revival at Oak Plain Presbyterian Church, the visiting mimster was blind and stayedat our house. I remember reading books to him during tie week.

Music was a big part of our lives from an early age. Mother played the piano at church and she secondedon the piano for Uncle Stokes when he played the fiddle. Mother played by ear. I liked to sing and didsolos at church and at school.

There was much work for us on the farm - chopping strawberries and picking them at an early age, putting our fertilizer, pulling corn and hauling to barn, chopping stove lvood and carrying to house, inteen years working in tobacco, packing strarvberries, plowing fields with tractor, pulling plow, cleaninghouse and ironing and cooking when Mother was away. The story has been told on me many times ofDaddy using me to pull the plough in the new gtound strawberrry patch. For anyone one who doesn'tknow what a new ground is, it is a newly cleared field with stumps left from the trees. I guess Daddyfigured I would take directions better than Old Jarhead, the mule. Ploughing with the tracror was moreexciting than cleaning the house, but I also wanted our house clean and neat as I got old enough to date.

The radio was a form of entertainment for the family with shows like "Amos and Andy", "George Burnsand Gracie Allen" and "The Hit Parade", but we had to be perfectly quiet during the news with GabrielHeater every night because Daddy wanted to listen.. There were no magazines or newspapers. When I gotolder I did read lots of books from the school library.

Plav was mostly outside climbing trees, hopscotch, playing in the little play house, drawing a play houseon the ground and actually playing from room to room, playing marbles with Julian Wilkins who lived

about a mile away, jacks at school at recess or softball at school. During high school came basketball, theonlv competitive sport in Duplin County at that time. I really enjoyed basketball and played on the teamfor four years.

I can remember pouting when I didn't get my way at times. On one occasion when a birthday party wasdenied I brought several friends home on the school bus for a party an),way. Mother *as *oiking in hogkilling that day and had to stop to make some candy.

We did not have telephones in those days and there was no way for a boyfriend to call for a date. I wouldfind myself waiting and wondering . There was the excitement if he appeared, but there were times whenhe did not show and I would have to find consolation in the piano.

My formal piano education was limited, there was enough such that I could play for my ejoyment. pianolessons were taken from teachers at school when they were available.

Another little story comes to mind about Mother's biscuits. In elementary school I always took my lunchto school and many times it would be ham biscuits. My friends would bring rvhite bread and baloneysandwiches and I would try to trade with them. My, how I would like one of Mother's hot biscuits withham now.

These reflections were written in 1986 when I was visiting Dad, but are ending now in the year 2000 justprior to a Newkirk family reunion in June. If Dad were around, and I miss him so much, I would stilltease him about giving me the name Willie Sprunt. It seemed to me he surely wanted a boy even though Iwas named for two special aunts, Willie Newkirk Gauss (Aunt Billie) and Betg Sprunt Robinson Newkirk(Aunt Betty). Believe it or not, I get a fair amount of mail addressed to Mr. Willie Norfleet. All jokingaside, it is with umbleness that I thank my God everyday for parents who were dedicated Christians, believers, pursuers, and doers ofthe Faith. They have left us with a legary hard to achieve. Thank youMother and Dad.

This home was built by Stokes Wiltiam Newkirk and his brother, Joseph Albert Newkirk, circa 1900. The home faces the Otd Cornwalis Road named this because General

Comwalis traveled this road from Wilmington to Ralaigh, North Carolina on his way to

Yorktown, Virginia where he surrendered in 178 t to end the American Revolution. Afterrhree monrhs in World War I, Lucian Whitfield Newkirk was discharged because of poor

eyesight and retumed to live with his Uncle Stokes and Aunt Bettie here until his

marriage. After Bettie Robinson Newkirk died in t948 Lucian W. Newkirk renovated the

home and moved back there. The house was purchased by Catherine Newkirk Hanks and

her husband George and is presently owned by George Whitfield Newkirk.
