Pike County is an area that is rich in history and we invite you to come and make memories of your own. Consider the possibilities. In conjunction with the expert direction of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce and its members, your dreams for a business or a place to call home can come true. We know the territory — come grow with us. The Historic Village of Milford, Pennsylvania T he Pike County Chamber of Commerce and the Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau Visitors Center are located in one of Milford’s more beautiful historic structures, the Milford Community House, built c. 1818, eventually becoming the Pinchot Homestead, donated by the Pinchot family to Milford to use as a library and meeting house, and ultimately becoming what it is today, the home base for a number of local non-profit organizations. Milford’s historic district and environs have many lovely landmark buildings which lend an air of old-fashioned charm and serenity to the area, especially in central Milford Borough. Historic places to see while visiting include Grey Towers National Historic Site, a castle-like structure that was once home to Gifford Pinchot (1865-1946), America’s first Chief of the United States Forest Service and 28th Governor of Pennsylvania. His legacy spearheaded America’s conservation movement. The McLaughlin House, built in 1904, today is home to The Columns Museum of the Pike County Historical Society. Pike County’s history is celebrated here, but this tiny museum has achieved national fame as the home of the Lincoln Flag, the banner that cushioned the President’s head after he was shot at Ford’s Theatre in 1865. Visit The Columns Museum to learn how the flag came to Milford. The Jervis-Gordon Grist Mill Historic District, also known as The Upper Mill, today houses shops and a restaurant, but the millstones continue to turn, and a self-guided tour explains how such mills operated. Other notable historic structures to visit in Pike County include the Roebling Aqueduct, designed by John Roebling of Brooklyn Bridge fame, in Lackawaxen, PA, and Milford’s Forest Hall, America’s first college of forestry which was an adjunct of the Yale School of Forestry. The turnpike was created in 1811 under a petition from Daniel W. Today, Route 739 serves as one of Pike County’s most important commercial and residential thoroughfares with numerous businesses, restaurants, services, professional offices and developments along its path, putting convenience close at hand if you live in, work in, or are visiting this beautiful part of Pike County. A t the westernmost edge of Pike County is Lake Wallenpaupack , which is 15 miles long surrounded by 52 miles of breathtaking shoreline; the lake surface is approximately 5700 acres. It is the third largest man-made lake in Pennsylvania, engineered to provide hydroelectricity as well as recreational attractions. Two 132-ton spillway gates are used to regulate the lake water level, and a pipeline, 14 foot in diameter, funnels the lake water three-and-a-half miles to power a huge turbine at the electric generating station. The lake also offers sports enthusiasts opportunities for motor and sail boating, water and jet-skiing, as well as canoeing, rafting and row-boating. Leisurely sight-seeing tours are available, and if you prefer, it is also an angler’s paradise, so bring your fishing gear. Along its shore, experience great hiking, scenic beauty and bird watching. There are many lakeside places to eat which provide wonderful views of the lake, and places to stay range from national hotel chains to lovely motels and B&Bs found nowhere else. Western Pike County has much to offer; check out your options for this lovely part of our county when you visit www.pikechamber.com. Historic structures and old cemeteries dating from Colonial times are found in Western Pike too. Another Chamber of Commerce publication, Pike County Heritage Tours, will take you to some of these sites. The Lackawaxen River is also found in Western Pike County flowing through Hawley and emptying into the Delaware River at Lackawaxen, an important area for Eagle watching during their migrating and nesting periods. The river also is an excellent place for canoeing and kayaking, and a great place for anglers to find bass and trout. Along U.S. Route 6 and PA Route 507 many commercial establishments providing everything from groceries to equipment for outdoor and lake activities can be found. Photos by Jim Levell. Pike County Pike County W ater in motion seems to hold endless fascination for humans. Whether it’s the hypnotic oscillation of a lawn sprinkler lazily arcing water through the air or the menacing rush of millions of gallons of water cascading over a precipice, we are drawn to it. Waterfalls inspire awe; they hold breathtaking beauty, as well as an element of danger. They never fail to please and delight. Due to Pike County’s location in the Delaware Highlands, it is unusually blessed with many waterfalls. Here, at one of the sources of the Delaware River, the water that forms the rivulets and streams makes its course to the sea, and, in so doing, finds its way to channels that rush downstream, tumbling over rocks and cascading over cliffs. Some waterfalls may be little more than a great volume of water tumbling over a few cataracts and falling no more than several feet such as you find at Snow Hill Falls in Porter Township, while others may be a much smaller volume of water falling a great many feet such as you find at Silverthread Falls (one of the two falls at Dingmans Falls) in Delaware Township. Further, many of the falls in Pike County are not a single waterfall at all, but two or more cascades in a series such as you find at Raymondskill Falls in Dingman Township. The nature of the waterfalls here in Pike County changes dramatically based on season and weather. After heavy rains, the falls become swollen with the increase of water. What may have been an impressive and picturesque cascade yesterday, may be an awesome and frightening torrent today, creating wind tunnels and abundant mist that leave you quite drenched. The deep freeze of winter puts yet another spin on the waterfalls, creating castles of ice clinging to the cliffs. The trails leading to some of the falls are easily managed, such as that at Dingmans Falls which is handicap accessible, while others, such as those leading to the Raymondskill Falls, are quite steep and often treacherous. Depending on your mobility and athleticism, either or both would be a good choice. Most waterfalls in Pike County are on public lands, open to anyone wishing to see them at no charge. However, Bushkill Falls in Lehman Township is privately owned; there is an admission fee. Lest outsiders find the naming of geographic locations in Pike County a bit on the gruesome side, it should be noted that the suffix -kill as in Bushkill, Raymondskill, Sawkill, is a corruption of the Dutch kil which means brook or stream. No murder or mayhem here. From top to bottom: Three aspects of Shohola Falls, photos by Jim Levell; Childs Park Falls in winter, photo by Michael J. Pike CountyPike CountyWater in motion seems to hold endless fascination for

humans. Whether it’s the hypnotic oscillation of alawn sprinkler lazily arcing water through the air or

the menacing rush of millions of gallons of water cascadingover a precipice, we are drawn to it. Waterfalls inspire awe; theyhold breathtaking beauty, as well as an element of danger. Theynever fail to please and delight.

Due to Pike County’s location in the Delaware Highlands,it is unusually blessed with many waterfalls. Here, at one of thesources of the Delaware River, the water that forms the rivuletsand streams makes its course to the sea, and, in so doing, findsits way to channels that rush downstream, tumbling over rocksand cascading over cliffs.

Some waterfalls may be little more than a great volume ofwater tumbling over a few cataracts and falling no more thanseveral feet such as you find at Snow Hill Falls in PorterTownship, while others may be a much smaller volume of waterfalling a great many feet such as you find at Silverthread Falls(one of the two falls at Dingmans Falls) in Delaware Township.Further, many of the falls in Pike County are not a single waterfallat all, but two or more cascades in a series such as you find atRaymondskill Falls in Dingman Township.

The nature of the waterfalls here in Pike County changesdramatically based on season and weather. After heavy rains, the falls become swollen with the increase of water. What mayhave been an impressive and picturesque cascade yesterday, maybe an awesome and frightening torrent today, creating windtunnels and abundant mist that leave you quite drenched. Thedeep freeze of winter puts yet another spin on the waterfalls, creating castles of ice clinging to the cliffs.

The trails leading to some of the falls are easily managed, such as that at Dingmans Falls which is handicap accessible, while others, such as those leading to the Raymondskill Falls, are quite steep and often treacherous. Depending on yourmobility and athleticism, either or both would be a good choice.

Most waterfalls in Pike County are on public lands, open toanyone wishing to see them at no charge. However, BushkillFalls in Lehman Township is privately owned; there is anadmission fee.

Lest outsiders find the naming of geographic locations inPike County a bit on the gruesome side, it should be noted thatthe suffix -kill as in Bushkill, Raymondskill, Sawkill, is acorruption of the Dutch kil which means brook or stream. Nomurder or mayhem here.
