Well we have almost completed the year and are already half way through another Lionistic Year. It is

almost as if the second half of the year belonged mainly to our long serving, exemplary Lion, Dr Hilton Horsley.

Firstly we had the Port Shepstone High School Leadership Camp, convened by Lion Hilton and supported by Lion Lady Bondi. The Sheppie Team pulled together, both Lions and Lion Ladies, to make this another successful one for the 30th year running.

Secondly we had the Cataract Operations during eye care week in October, and again Lion Hi l ton was very involved. Ten successful operations performed by Volunteer Surgeon Dr Steyn, on 10 extremely happy patients. A few had some incredibly touching stories to tell and I must admit, there were a few tears shed.

Thirdly, our “oldies” Christmas Party held a few weeks ago. This was again organised by Lion Hilton and Lion Lady Bondi with the assistance of all the Clubs members. A truly humbling project and one that our sponsors have been a huge part of for a many of years.

A number of us attended the Mid Year Conference at Sierra Resort in Mooi River. Council Chairman Denis, did the welcoming address and discussed how dedicated we should all be to Lionism. The example that he used was about the our own Lion Hilton. A person dedicated to his Medical practice 24/7 , also other Caring Facilities like Hospice, and still he finds time to give 110% to Lions. We salute you Lion Hilton and are proud to have you as a member of The Port Shepstone Lions Club.

Well done to the Club for achieving 9 awards at the Mid Year Conference. The best of all the Clubs and thanks to all for your dedicated support. There were additional fun awards for the best dressed couple at the Theme evening. The Love Clan won this award. Well done to Lion Lady Irene for the outfits and for Lion Alister for filling it so well.

The Tree House guys from the Crows Nest almost caused a ship to sink. The efforts or lack thereof, of “Skipper” Justin (I know I got 95%) Hinchcliff, was a concern for his close friends and also Suzette over the past weekend. Well done on a prank that even Leon Schuster or Whackhead Simpson could not have executed better.

The Next six months for the Club is again a tough one with the Annual Lions Show in July and in between that we will add in a Golf Day. But before all of this we deserve a Christmas Party, a well earned break and then back to the Grind stone. For some of us this period is our busiest so we will keep our heads down and graft.

To those that are travelling, please travel safely. And Last but not least, Des and I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. ”

40 Executive Council of Learners’ elect upon arrival at the campsite

ort Shepstone Lions' 30th Annual Leadership Retreat was held during the weekend of 16-18 September at Camp

PAnerley. 40 Grade 11 pupils, recently selected for the Port Shepstone High School 2017 Executive Council of Learners, attended the camp. The full weekend program commenced shortly after they arrived at the camp on Friday

with a welcome address by Retreat Convener, Lion Hilton Horsley, a course briefing by Lion Peter Mc Killen followed by talk on Lions Clubs International by Council Chairman Denis Meyer. This was followed by, an address by Headmaster Peter Jenkins and the official opening address by Club President Jeff Smith. The group was thereafter broken up into 5 colour coded teams and took part in various team-building exercises. After supper the ECL's participated in a very enjoyable ice breaking exercise before heading off to bed.

The ECL's had an early rise on the Saturday morning for an exercise session and a delicious breakfast prepared by the Lion Ladies. Then it was down to business, with lectures on leadership theory, motivation, goal setting, an innovative engineering exercise, people to people relationships and conflict management. Various presenters included Miss Kerry Mc Killen and Lions Jeff Smith, Hilton Horsley, Alastair Warman and Peter Mc Killen. After lunch the group participated in a very enjoyable and challenging “Amazing Race” together with Lions who acted as marshals and transported the teams around the course. Sunrise Farms once again kindly allowed the club to utilise their farm lands for this course which was organised and run by Lions Nico De Jong and Kevin Ross. The Grade 11's arrived at the Lions' Formal Dinner, held at Port Shepstone Country Club on the Saturday night, wearing glittering make-up, elegant evening wear, and smart suits. The main hall and tables had been beautifully decorated by Lion Lady Anita Hulley and her team. Emcee Lion Peter Mc Killen did a superb job in explaining the various formalities and protocols associated with a typical formal Lions gathering. Guest speaker for the evening, Mrs Monica Woodhouse of Give A Child A Family, motivated everyone present with her inspiring message. The Amazing Race floating trophy was presented to the red coloured "Red Reindeer" team.. The event was once again a resounding success.

On Sunday, the group, once again had an early start for exercise and breakfast. Then it was on to morning devotions with Mr Damian Williams and more lectures on communication and choices presented by Pastor Trevor Downham and Lion Hilton Horsley, ECL in action and their evaluation of the weekend. The afternoon session was dominated by the strenuous and very enjoyable obstacle course which was marshalled with much laughter by all Lions present. The rainy weather and muddy conditions added to the fun.

The Retreat was, by all accounts, a great success and hats off to Course Conveners, Hilton and Bondi Horsley and their dedicated team of Lions and Lion Ladies. The project was funded by the Club's charity account together with generous sponsorships and support. Leadership development of our youth is one of the core projects of Lions Clubs International and this project is one of the signature service projects of the Port Shepstone Lions Club.

uring December, members of the Port

DShepstone Lion Ladies Club visited Assisi Orphanage and presented the children with

presents and gifts as part of their Santa in a Shoe Box project. Their fine efforts brought much joy to the lives of these forgotten children.

uring the recent Zone Meeting hosted at the Port

DShepstone Lions’ Den, the club’s mascot, Cedric the Lion was unceremoniously kidnapped by a very

devious group of Ramsgate Lions. Shortly thereafter Ramsgate issued a “Ransom” challenge in the form of a generous donation of dog food to the local NSPCA. The Sheppie Lions happily agreed to this ransom and upon delivery of the food to the NSPCA, Cedric was safely returned to his rightful home at the top table of the board room! Ramsgate Lions, be warned.....you have awoken a “sleeping tiger!!”

uring December, Lion Lady President Estelle O’Neill,

DClub President Jeff Smith and Lion Ladies once again visited Suid Natal Primary and presented the many

underprivileged children with Christmas gifts. These were gratefully received by the overjoyed children.

n Saturday 26th November, Port Shepstone Lions and Lion Ladies hosted their 26th Annual

OChristmas Luncheon for Senior Citizens at the Port Shepstone High School Hall.

Approximately 100 senior folk from the Flower Foundation, Anerley Haven, Mbango Valley and other residences in the area were transported to the event by Lions members.

They were all treated to superb live musical entertainment courtesy of Jonathan Brauteseth on the keyboards and singer Brian Algie. The guests were serenaded with Christmas Carols and other lovely songs of yesteryear.

The guests were also served a delicious 3 course Christmas lunch prepared by the Sheppie Lion Ladies. Santa Clause, aka Lion Clayton Curnow presented each guest with a sponsored Christmas gift bag filled with wonderful goodies.

The whole event was, once again a huge success, thanks mainly to project coordinator Lion Hilton Horsley and his team of dedicated Lions and Lion Ladies. Port Shepstone Lions are extremely grateful to Port Shepstone High School for allowing the Club to use their superb facilities. The Lions would also like to thank the Hostel catering staff, Sunrise Farms, the Frey family and Fresh Meat, Ola Ice Cream and Harbourview Superspar for their sponsorship, assistance and support.

Merriment, fun, laughter, great food and “interesting” presents were the order of the day at the Sheppie Lions’ annual Christmas party. This year’s event was organised by Lion Kelvin Hulley and very kindly hosted by Lion Jean Masson at his lovely home in Umtentweni. As

usual the venue was superbly decorated thanks to Lion Ladies Jenny Vogt, Anita Hulley and their helpers. Bela Gallagher cooked the delicious 3 course meal and Lion Denis Meyer provided music for the evening. The traditional Christmas gift swapping was, once again thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Each Lion and Lion Lady had to bring a wrapped gift. All gifts were placed together on a table and all were given numbers from 1-40. Number one had first choice of the gifts and, once unwrapped, if he/she didn’t like the gift then they could swap it for another gift that was already unwrapped and so on. The higher numbers obviously had a better selection to choose from and No 1 had the final selection. It was a great evening and the “die hards” ended up dancing the night away in true Sheppie Lions’ style. A wonderful way to end a superb year by a truly wonderful group of people who make such a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. A very Merry Christmas to all Sheppie Lions and Lion Ladies!

Laurie’s recent new “Da Mato’s” nose job was a

great success!!

For the second year in a row, The Port Shepstone Lions Team were the winners of the annual Potjiekos Competition held at the Port Shepstone Country Club. Receiving the trophy are Lions Mervin Curnow, Jean Masson and Clayton Curnow.

ion Justin Hinchliff recently underwent his skipper’s exam at The Pont in

LPort Edward. After using Lion Jean Masson’s boat, the “Sandy D” for his practical test, he forgot to replenish the fuel which resulted in the “tree

House” clan being stranded up river without fuel! In retaliation, a letter using the official SADSAA logo was fabricated and sent to Justin informing him that he had failed both the practical and theoretical test. Poor Justin was left to stew over his failure for several days until it was officially announced at the December Club meeting that he had actually passed and that the letter was a fake!! Moral of the story - never leave the Sandy D without fuel!!
