[1] Kia ora Parents, whanau, and caregivers, Haere mai and welcome back to our fantastic school for term 3! We trust everyone had a nice relaxing term break. It has been great to see all of our precious tamariki return safely to school and everyone looks charged for a busy term of learning and life at Welcome Bay School. The holidays were a busy time around the school with some developments occurring in our school oce admin area and staroom, as well as in a junior class Toe Toe (Mrs Gree). Over the last term or so we have been very fortunate to have our admin block completely painted in a nice neutral colour, and we’ve also had some walls recovered in a product call Autex, which is great for displaying work etc. As a result of having some le over Autex we were able to completely recover the walls in our new entrant class “Toe Toe”, which looks absolutely great and will also keep the room a bit warmer for our little folk. Keeping Ourselves Safe We have this programme beginning at school shortly, which is run by the Police and is a great programme with a focus on growing bully free environments and helping children to understand their rights, and developing strategies to keep themselves safe in a range of situations and environments. If you would like to know more about this programme, there will be a parent meeting this Friday aer our school assembly at 10am in the staroom. Constable Emma Buxton will be here to provide some details about the programme and answer any questions you may have. Please feel very welcome to attend. Have a great week ahead whanau! Our new school uniform provider is: NZUniforms - (07) 985 6213 371 Cameron Road www.nzuniforms.com With our recent school logo and brand development it seems timely to review our school uniform with a view to the future. As with any uniform changes, it is intended that we will phase out the existing uniforms over the next 2 years. With that in mind, do not stress or worry about the need to change your child’s existing uniform. Any changes made will closely align to what we currently have in place regarding colour etc, so no child will look out of place during the change over period. As yet there are no price lists available as our products have not yet been completely conrmed, and although there will be price increases we will try our very best to keep cost at a minimum. NZUniforms can support families to purchase their school uniforms by oering a lay-by facility for up to several months, and WINZ quotes are also an option. Uniforms can be ordered online and will then be delivered to school if required. The best way however, is to visit the store on Cameron Road, try on the uniform so it looks great and ts well. The staare very helpful and will be able to let you know exactly what is required for your child’s school uniform so they can wear it with pride. Welcome Bay School UniformsWelcome Bay School has recently made changes to our school uniform supplier. Our new school uniform provider is:

NZUniforms - (07) 985 6213371 Cameron Road

www.nzuniforms.comWith our recent school logo and brand development it seems timely to review our school uniform with a view to the future. As with any uniform changes, it is intended that we will phase out the existing uniforms over the next 2 years. With that in mind, do not stress or worry about the need to change your child’s existing uniform. Introducing the new Welcome Bay School logo and brand!

Firstly, we would would like to acknowledge the huge amount of work that has gone into this development, which actually started many years ago as a school, staff, and community with the development of the Welcome Bay Learner! Secondly, we have been very fortunate to have a talented member of the team over the years, Mrs Judy Smyth, working hard with the children and a variety of others to develop the art work of the five birds, and also having a major role in developing our final design as shown below. Our new logo/brand will be used around our school in directional signage including class names, and will also be made into a contemporary new sign at the front of our school. We will also have new letter heads, website layout, cards, and will phase the logo into our school uniform over the next two years or so.

The logo is a feather representing the five birds that contribute to the Welcome Bay Learner and the birds environments. The feather also represents flight and is a direct link to our school vision statement and whakatauki...

“Ma te huruhuru ka rere te manu, Adorn the birds with feathers so that it can fly!”

The yellow at the top of the feather represents Karearea (Falcon) - Kia kaha - Show courage! It also represents the environment of the sky and the line of the wind (tawhirimatea) cuts through to help form the snow peak of the next

The green represents the Kea - Tuku patai - Ask questions. This also represents the next environment, the mountains, with the snow crest accented

The third environment is the bush represented here in red depicting the Kereru and one of its delicacies the Miro berries. The Kereru (Wood Pigeon) also represents “Have a heart” - Kia manawanui.

This represents the Toroa or Albatross - Seek adventure - Whaea te pai tawhiti. This is the environment of the ocean with the tumbling and rolling waves.

The final environment is that of the inlets of the estuary where the Matuku Moana (Blue Heron) reside. This bird represents Standing proud - Kia maia.

KICK Start: Transition to school programmeThis term Welcome Bay Junior School will be starting a brand new transition to school programme called “Kick Start”. This is for both parents and children and “Kick Start” will run for seven weeks during each term beginning next week on Monday 23rd July at 1:30pm (week 2). The intention of Kick Start is to provide an opportunity for both parents and beginning children to learn about school prior to starting. A typical a"ernoon would involve about 40 mins with parents talking about school matters with someone, while children spend time with Mrs Absalom (Smith) enjoying some learning activities with a focus on literacy. Later parents join their children in the class and can be with their children for the remainder of the a"ernoon. Families who participate in the Kick Start programme will also receive a free resource kit to help with learning at home.

Transition to school is so important and this programme provides a valuable opportunity for our children to get a good start to their life at school, which leads to greater success long term.

If you have a child starting this term then this is perfect for you. Also if you have recently had a child start you are very welcome to come along to the parent sessions to learn more about our awesome school. If you are interested in attending please call the school office on 5441113 and let us know you will be along so we can plan for numbers. Also, if you know someone who intends on enrolling at Welcome Bay School but does not get the newsletter please let them know too. We look forward to seeing you!

Reminder: Teacher Only DayOn the last day of last term we sent home a note informing you that we are having a “Teacher Only Day” this term on Friday 27th July (week 2). One of the greatest contributing factors to increasing student achievement is growing teacher capacity and this is something that we are committed to at Welcome Bay School. As Math is a focus area for development this year, a large part of our teacher only day will be focused on mathematics. School will not be open for instruction on this day, nor will any staff be on site , so please make suitable arrangements for your children. Many thanks.

Learning PortfoliosThis week your child will be bringing home their Learning Portfolio’s to share with you. These will contain their mid year “Learning Report”. Please take the time and the opportunity to sit down with your child and talk through their learning portfolio, celebrate their successes, talk through any challenges, and show a genuine interest in their life at school. Evidence shows us that this aspect of home partnering with school leads to greater success for children in their learning at school.

This is an important document as it is a record of your child’s learning and it is a document that we spend time reviewing so that it is a relevant and meaningful evidence-based document representing your child’s learning journey. We also use the information in “Section A” to pass on to the following teacher so they can establish firm learning goals for your child at the beginning of the year as they enter their new class. With this is mind it is really important that the portfolios are looked a#er and returned to school in great condition.

We hope you enjoy sharing your child’s learning with them and remember that if you have any questions, concerns, or positive comments, please make a time to meet with your child’s teacher.
