What does the fastest man on Earth eat?

USAIN BOLT works very hard every day training to stay the fastest man

in the world. He’s one of the most famous sprinters of all time, with world records in the 100-metre and 200-metre races. He can run 100 metres in about 9.5 seconds – that’s about 40 strides (big steps)! His top speed is about 44 km per hour!

But how does he do it? Bolt is very strong and tall (almost 2 metres tall). He goes to the gym every day and exercises for hours to stay strong and healthy. Bolt also enjoys eating good food. His coach decides what he eats every day, but it isn’t a very strict diet and the food he eats is delicious.

Bolt is from Jamaica, so for breakfast he likes having Jamaican dumplings and

yam. Yam is a very popular vegetable in Jamaica, but it originally came from Africa. Dumplings are like small cakes and you can cook them in many different ways. In Jamaica they make them with fl our, water, butter and milk. For lunch Bolt usually has fi sh with bread and brown rice. This type of rice is healthier than the normal white rice. Usain usually eats wholemeal bread made with special fl our that’s very healthy, too. He likes having chicken or other meat for dinner with some more rice.

Water is very important in Usain Bolt’s diet. He drinks a lot of it every day and he also likes fruit and juices. Is his diet similar to yours?

Delicious Jamaican coffee

A few kilometres North of Kingston, Jamaica’s capital, you can visit the Blue Mountains.

It’s the highest and longest mountain range on the island and in the Caribbean. When Columbus discovered it in 1494, it was full of trees. Today, the rainforest is much smaller and there’s a national park to protect the trees that are left.

People use the lower parts of the Blue Mountains, that haven’t got any trees, to grow vegetables, spices and the world-famous Blue Mountain coffee. Sir Nicholas Lawes, an important British politician in Jamaica, was the fi rst to

bring coffee to the island in 1728. In the early 19th century, Jamaica was the most important coffee producer in the world. Today there are other countries that produce more coffee, including Brazil, Vietnam and Colombia.

Blue Mountain coffee is one of the most expensive coffees in the world, and about 80 per cent of it goes to Japan each year. The weather in the Jamaican mountain range is perfect to grow delicious coffee beans; it’s cool with a lot of rain. Jamaica also grows other things and sells them around the world, such as sugar and bananas.
