A Message From the President

As a University with strong ties to our local First Nations communities, we are proud to welcome you to Capilano. For nearly 50 years, Capilano University has inspired and challenged students to be innovators—to create meaningful experiences that will help achieve success, both in and outside of the classroom. Here, we encourage you to reach for anything you aspire to achieve. You are our future.

By choosing Capilano University, you will continue to move forward on your journey of lifelong learning in a supportive, inclusive and creative environment. You have joined a community of more than 11,000 students, faculty and staff who will contribute to an extraordinary experience. At Capilano, we work together to build leaders who will excel in their future careers.

I invite you to explore what Capilano University has to offer and discover what makes the Cap

experience so unique.

On behalf of the entire University community, I wish you every success for the future.

Sincerely,

Paul Dangerfield President, Capilano University

Welcome from Chief

Maureen Thomas,

Tsleil‐Waututh Nation

TSLEIL-WAUTUTH NATION People of the Inlet

Welcome from Chief Maureen Thomas – Tsleil-Waututh Nation On behalf of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, People of the Inlet, we welcome you to our homelands and waters in which the main campus of Capilano University is located. The Tsleil-Waututh have lived in this area since time out of mind. We have always been stewards of these lands and waters, in order to ensure that those who come after us can benefit as we have for centuries. In this day and age, our people understand the importance of having an education. We know that there are many opportunities in diverse careers for xwelenemuxw (First Nations people) to fulfil. We understand that these opportunities may require a certificate, a diploma, or a degree. Indeed, we echo one of our great leaders, Chief Dan George, who in his Lament for Confederation said, “I shall grab the instruments of the white man’s success – his education, his skills – and with these new tools I shall build my race into the proudest segment of your society.” We encourage you to seek out programs and staff that will help guide and support you during your time here; we encourage you to share your knowledge and gifts with all students and staff across the campus; mostly, we wish you all the best as you complete your educational journey here at Capilano University. Respectfully, Chief Maureen Thomas Tsleil-Waututh Nation

Welcome From

Chief Calvin Craigan,

Sechelt Nation

“7imash 7imash Welcome to kálax-ay Capilano University Sunshine Coast Campus. On behalf of my Council and as Chief of the shíshálh Nation I extend a warm welcome to every student seeking their post-secondary education here on the Sunshine Coast. It is with particular pride that I watch students from our community pursue their dreams and degrees with passion and forethought on knowledge this investment in education will impact their entire lives and the many lives they will touch throughout their careers, Our people attend university more frequently now than ever and our Elders know that this is the highest priority for the individual Nation member to achieve if we as shíshálh are to have the influence and power to effect changes at the highest levels in Canada. You are going to find our people in boardrooms, running corporations, in the medical fields, in technology, in academics and research, in science and beyond and when they are in vital positions across the country at the centre of change and growth you will have watched the seeds grow on our lands beginning at Capilano University. Chief Calvin Craigan hiwus”
