D uring his time as the head coach at the College of Central Florida, Tim Ryan
has taken the program to great heights. For his eff orts, Ryan, who led the Patriots to the NJCAA National Championship last season and to the FCSAA State Tournament on nine straight occasions, was inducted into the FCSAA Men’s Basketball Hall of Fame on March 8 during halftime of the NJCAA Region VIII/FCSAA Men’s State Championship Game held at the College of Central Florida. Under Ryan, the Patriots have qualifi ed for the state tournament 10 times in 11 seasons. CF is 254-103 under Ryan, who became the fi rst coach in Mid-Florida Conference history to lead a program to three straight conference titles. He also earned state and national coach of the year honors in 2013. “It’s certainly a great honor. You don’t go into coaching thinking you’re going to go into the hall of fame,” Ryan said. “It’s something I never shot for, but as the years went on and my numbers got better, it was something that I thought could happen. I just think how fortunate I have been to be in a situation like this and follow former CF coach Gene

Smithson. He did a great job with this program; I’ve just keep building it.”
Ryan credits CF Athletic Director Bob Zelinski, former CF President Charles Dassance and current CF President Dr. Jim Henningsen with helping him reach the top.
“Th ey have put me in the situation for this to happen and being voted into the hall of fame ranks up there with the greatest achievements I’ve had in my career,” he said.
When Ryan accepted his current position more than 11 years ago, he said he had to stop and take it all in.
“When I got the job, I left Ocala to see my family,” said Ryan, who commuted from Pinellas County to Ocala four days per week for his fi rst fi ve years as head coach at CF. “I stopped at the I-75 rest area south of State Road 200, called my wife and said, ‘I can’t believe they are going to pay me to coach full-time,’ because I would have done it for nothing.’”
Ryan joins Dr. Bill Campion (1994), Smithson (1998), Simon Johnson (2008/Hampton College), and Dr. Jim Harvey (2013), as members of the CF athletic program to receive
state hall of fame honors in men’s basketball.
Zelinski said Ryan’s induction into the Hall of Fame was well-deserved.
“His record of achievement with conference titles, state tournament appearances and the national championship, speaks for itself,” said Zelinski. “Tim’s commitment to FCSAA basketball and his leadership throughout the state have been outstanding and this induction is recognition of his work and success.”
Joining Ryan in the 2014 hall of fame class for men’s basketball is current St. Petersburg coach Earnest Crumbley, former Miami Dade athletic director Jim Cox and Chipola’s Alice Pendergrass.
Crumbley has the most wins among active men’s coaches in the state at 289 and led SPC to the state title in 2002, while Cox was the helm of the MDC program and now runs the scorer’s table for the NBA’s Miami Heat.
Pendergrass was a longtime contributor to the state tournament, which had been held in Chipola since 1996.

Th is is Tommy Jones’ third season as the head women’s basketball coach at the College of Central Florida. In just two short years, he has revitalized the Lady Patriots basketball program.
Last season, Jones led the team to its fi rst Mid-Florida Conference title in more than four years and broke into the NJCAA national poll for the fi rst time in recent memory. He also led the Lady Patriots to their fi rst FCSAA State Basketball Tournament appearance in more than six years, falling to eventual NJCAA National Champions Chipola in the semifi nals. Jones developed newcomer Th ais Oliveira into one of the top shot blockers in the country, fi nishing Top 10 in NJCAA and No. 2 in the state.
A graduate from the University of Florida, Jones brings more than 25 years of experience to the College of Central Florida, most recently as the women’s assistant basketball coach at the University of Tampa. While there, the Spartans rose to a top 10 national ranking.
Prior to UT, Jones was the head women’s basketball coach at Mid-Florida Conference opponent Hillsborough Community College from 2008-2011. He led the
Tommy JonesHEAD COACH, WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Hawks to a 67-42 record and consecutive trips to the state tournament. In his second season, they were co-conference champions and set the school record for most wins in a season with 23. Th e Hawks had won less than eight games in each of the previous six seasons before Jones took over. Under Jones’ watch at HCC, 10 players moved on to play at the NCAA Division I and II levels. He also coached three conference players of the year and two McDonald’s All-Americans.
Aside from his time coaching the women’s programs at HCC and UT, Jones also held coaching jobs at HCC (men’s assistant
basketball coach 2005-2007), Th e Cambridge School (assistant girls basketball coach, 2001-2005), Tampa Catholic High School (assistant girls basketball coach, 1999-2001), St. Peter Claver Catholic School (boys basketball coach, 1999-2000), and Tampa Prep (assistant boys basketball coach, 1991-1999).
Jones resides in Tampa with his wife, Kimberly Hannah-Jones, daughter, Kai, and son, Th omas.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALLTh e College of Central Florida women’s basketball team earned its fi rst state tournament victory since 2011. CF shared Mid-Florida Conference Championship. Th e Patriots swept MFC rivals Hillsborough and Santa Fe for the fi rst time in fi ve years, while also winning all three matchups against two-time defending conference champion Florida State College at Jacksonville. Prior to the MFC play, CF knocked off then-No. 2 ranked Tallahassee Community College. Th e win over TCC was the highest ranked opponent defeated by the Patriots in 10 years. CF was led by Th ais Oliveira, who became the fi rst Patriot player to earn state and national player of the week honors since Sarah Hunter in 2013. Oliveira also became the fi rst CF player to earn multiple player of the week honors since 2005-2006. CF’s excellence last season enabled coach Tommy Jones to become the third coach in Florida history to lead multiple women’s programs to the state tournament. Over the past seven years, the Lady Patriots have winning records against conference foes FSC-J (11-10) and Daytona State (12-10). CF is 11-11 vs. Daytona State and 8-7 in fi ve years against Hillsborough, the conference’s newest member.
MEN’S BASKETBALLTh e College of Central Florida men’s basketball team earned its 10th straight trip to the FCSAA State Tournament. Th e run by the Patriots is the third longest since the tournament began in 1961. CF was able to accomplish this in a year where it didn’t return a single starter for the fi rst time since 2008. Th e Patriots continued to dominate rival Santa Fe. CF has won fi ve straight games, and 21 of the last 23 games, against the Saints. Last season was the fi rst that CF won four games against the Saints in a single season. Th e Patriots also knocked Santa Fe out in the fi nals of the Mid-Florida Conference tournament for the second straight year and third time since 2011.
