Welcome To Berea Theological University College!

A Serious Seminary Where Students Train for Servant Leadership Mt. 20: 25 – 28

A Church of God World Missions Institution

OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR

6 January, 2020

Greetings to all students, both returning and new! A very happy and blessed New Year to each of you.

I welcome you to Berea Theological University College and wish to share a part of my heart with you.

When I say that we are looking forward to an exceptional year in 2020 at Berea, I am not simply saying

that because it is what is expected to be said. The administration and faculty in 2019 began making

some adjustments that have laid the groundwork and foundation for what are sure to be monumental

leaps forward for the Seminary this year. I can honestly say that we are overjoyed to have you here as

a part of the historical achievements that God is currently bringing about here at the school; looking

forward with great anticipation to the advancements that will be achieved as the year progresses.

We have a newly designed curriculum and overall academic program that brings us up to a level of

professionalism not seen here before. This has been, and continues to be, a team effort, with no one

person being set forward; everyone, including you as students, has a part in the raising of this

institution into a training centre that is known for the quality of ministers, leaders and chaplains that it

turns out.

At present, our application has been submitted to the Higher Education Authority of Zambia, and we

should soon be hearing their first recommendations. We are also working on accreditation with APTEA,

which will give us continent-wide recognition as a high quality, professional Seminary. Currently, we

are the only ones approved to be a degree granting Seminary for the Church of God on the African

continent, offering a unique educational opportunity that you should take full advantage of during

your time here with us. It is our pledge to you to help you discover, train and use the calling, gifts and

talents that God has given to you, and to help you take that next larger step toward fulfilling His will

for your life and ministry. As students and graduates, you are our cover letter to the world, and we

have every intention of being proud of you and the great works you will accomplish for God in a very

needy world.

Our approach to learning, ministry and life here at Berea is not a punitive approach; it is a positive

approach designed to help you achieve your best potential. If we did not care about and for you as a

student and a person, we would not be here. Each one of us, given our qualifications, could be

somewhere else making a good deal more money. But, we feel God calling us to dedicate this time in

our lives to you as the present and future of the church. We consider you to be a very worthwhile

investment, and look forward to seeing what God will accomplish through your lives and ministries.

It is my prayer that you will have a great first term, and an even better year here at Berea. May the

God of all creation, and the Lord of Glory accompany you and anoint you to fulfil the call He has

placed on your life. May His face and mercies always shine down upon each of you. May your families

be blessed and your lives filled with peace.

Sincerely,

Paul D. Stockard

Programmes Offered At Berea Theological University College

The following degree programs are proposed to be offered by Berea Theological University College to qualified holders of secondary school leaving certificates or their equivalents (minimum school-leaver’s entry requirement is 5 Ordinary Level subjects passed with a credit [for mature age entry, inquire from the Registrar’s office]):

1. Diploma in Theology (3 years) 2. BA in Theology 3. BA in Chaplaincy 4. BA in Ministry Leadership

The Credit System At Berea

Berea Theological University College uses semester credits in a 12-week block, that is, 11 learning weeks and 1 examination week. The credit hours required for the student to graduate from the BA Program with a specialization in Theology, Chaplaincy, or Ministry Leadership are the same. They are equivalent to 145 USA Semester credits tabulated as follows: • Core Courses: 97 • Electives: 6 • Specialization: 27 • Supervised Ministry: 11 Passes (Ps) • Internship: 5

The Bachelor of Arts in Theology Degree

This degree is the flagship degree of Berea Theological University College because it is intended to prepare programme participants for Church ministry. It is a Biblical requirement that one who oversees the flock of God be able to teach and defend the gospel, shepherd God’s flock with diligence and integrity, and model spiritual leadership in the community that is ethical and blameless. While there are many supporting courses in this programme, there is a great emphasis on theology in the specialization phase (fourth year).

Bachelor of Arts in Ministry Leadership degree

The BA in Ministry Leadership degree is a program intended to equip leaders of Christian Ministries and Churches with principles of spiritual leadership and knowledge necessary for leadership of non-profit faith-based ministries. As Churches and ministries have increased, the need for high quality leadership has also increased. Many Christians are beginning to question the quality of leadership they are getting and this program is designed to meet the needs of ministers who desire a solid foundation in Theology along with leadership principles and skills. This program shares the theological core comprising the Diploma in Theology program's total content. Students taking this course will begin in the BTUC university diploma and specialize in Ministry Leadership during their fourth years as is the case with the BA in Theology and the BA in Chaplaincy.

The Bachelor of Arts in Chaplaincy degree

The BA in Chaplaincy aims at training ministers who will take their ministry outside the local church to areas of human endeavours where spiritual care is needed but often lacking. The participant graduating this program may work as an institutional chaplain in such institutions as colleges,

orphanages, hospitals, prisons, army, police, tribal establishments, parliaments, interdenominational ministries, etc. Chaplains are trained to extend spiritual care beyond the reach of most local churches.

Students are welcome to enrol for holiday tuition pursuing either a degree programme or a diploma programme. The course duration is typically based on the assumption that students will be available for 3-week intensive courses during public school holidays. Please note that the cost of tuition per course is the same as for full-time students. Each 3-semester credit course costs K800 therefore, if 3 intensive courses are taken every holiday, the cost of tuition plus lodging and food will be K2,400 + K375 + K375 = K3,150. If nine (9) courses are taken each year a student will need a minimum of 4 years to complete a Diploma of Theology if there are no credits transferred into this program (36 taught courses = 108 credits). The minimum credit for graduation with a 3-year diploma is 113 semester credit hours.

Weekend Classes

Week-end classes are proposed for when the BTUC degrees and diplomas are officially launched. These classes are best suited for people living in Lusaka because they will run parallel to the Full-time residential programs. The student will attend a 2-hour lecture of Fridays and 8-hours of lectures on Saturdays. For their Field Education, these students will attend Church of God congregations on Sundays (if they are from Church of God). Students in the weekend classes will earn the same amount of credit as the Holiday Tuition students. The cost per term will be the cost of tuition for three (3) courses, that is, K2,400. They will be taking 3 courses per term totalling 108 credits in four years for the diploma and 5 years plus one term for the degree (if there are no credits transferred in for advanced placement).

P – Pass credit is granted in a course where numerical grading is not considered appropriate IN – Incomplete for exceptional reasons the student was not able to complete the course requirements. W – Withdraw from a course with the approval of the Academic Dean AU – Audit

ACADEMIC PROBATIONS & DISMISSALS

All mature age-entrants and transfer students will be on academic probation for one term. A grade of -C (70%) average is required for removal from academic probation status.

All students with average scores for any term falling below C (2.0) will be placed on Academic probation regardless of the year in which such falling grades occur. Such students will have compulsory library hours or tutorials (or both) added before they can re-attempt an examination.

Students receiving an average of a D (60%-67% [1.0 on BTUC’s 4-point scale]) in any two terms have diminished prospects of recovery in the same academic programme and will therefore be placed on academic dismissal. This means they cannot continue without showing official proof of having improved their academic ability to handle university-level work.

DISCIPLINARY ISSUES

Academic dishonesty Here is a very informative definition of plagiarism from Bowdoin college’s website (they have more than 220 years of being a liberal arts college):

Direct Plagiarism Direct plagiarism is the word-for-word transcription of a section of someone else’s work, without attribution and without quotation marks. The deliberate plagiarism of someone else's work is unethical, academically dishonest, and grounds for disciplinary actions, including expulsion.

Self Plagiarism Self-plagiarism occurs when a student submits his or her own previous work, or mixes parts of previous works, without permission from all professors involved. For example, it would be unacceptable to incorporate part of a term paper you wrote in high school into a paper assigned in a college course. Self-plagiarism also applies to submitting the same piece of work for assignments in different classes without previous permission from both professors.

Mosaic Plagiarism Mosaic Plagiarism occurs when a student borrows phrases from a source without using quotation marks, or finds synonyms for the author’s language while keeping to the same general structure and meaning of the original. Sometimes called “patch writing,” this kind of paraphrasing, whether intentional or not, is academically dishonest and punishable – even if you footnote your source!

Accidental Plagiarism Accidental plagiarism occurs when a person neglects to cite their sources, or misquotes their sources, or unintentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words, groups of words, and/or sentence structure without attribution. (See example for mosaic plagiarism.) Students

Page 24: Table of Contents - Berea Theological University College...Doctor of Ministry in Peace Studies, Master of Divinity, Bachelor of Arts in Theology. (PhD with Stellenbosch University

must learn how to cite their sources and to take careful and accurate notes when doing research. (See the Note-Taking section on the Avoiding Plagiarism page.) Lack of intent does not absolve the student of responsibility for plagiarism. Cases of accidental plagiarism are taken as seriously as any other plagiarism and are subject to the same range of consequences as other types of plagiarism. “Plagiarism.” https://www.bowdoin.edu/dean-of-students/judicial-board/academic-honesty-and-plagiarism/common-types-of-plagiarism.html ([date accessed 8/Jan/2019]) Impersonation

Another shameful practice in Zambian institutions of higher learning is impersonation. This happens more often during thesis work, when students hire advanced scholars to write papers for them. Impersonation is cheating and unfair to employers and the public who will hire this graduate on the assumption that this person possesses the skill-set, creativity, and knowledge-base that his or her degree’s research paper (e.g., thesis, dissertation, capstone paper) represents.

Absence and late-coming A ministerial student models how to respect God’s time, the teacher’s and other students’ time and is therefore punctual in attendance. All students residential students should arrive and depart on the listed arrival and departure dates. Prior permission is required for students to arrive earlier than a day before opening day, or for departing later than 24 hours after the school is closed. A letter of authorization will be needed and the necessary boarding fees paid for the additional days on campus (unless exempted by the Director for overwhelming compassionate reasons e.g., a student who is too sick to travel!).
