The reason is thatu.lab0x is actually just theentrypoint to a longer journeyandemergingglobalnetwork–bothofwhichyouwillhavetheopportunitytojoinaftercompletingthiscourse.In u.lab 0x, you will learn about people, projects, new collaborative learningenvironments, and social technologies that work to transform the economy andsociety fromwithin. If you’re interested in joining this journey andnetwork (andwe’ll say more about both below), u.lab 0x will help you identify an issue orchallengetoworkon,andwillintroduceyoutotheresourcesavailableintheu.labcommunitytosupportyou.Beforewegettothe0xsyllabus,let’slookatwhatthisjourneyandglobalnetworkactuallyis.

u.labforsystemsleadershipWe call it the u.lab for systems leadership. It exists online and offline, andlocations all around the world. It involves a few edX courses, multi-stakeholderchange labs,place-based innovationhubs,andsocial technologies(suchasTheoryU).Co-initiated over the past two decades by action researchers at MIT and thePresencingInstitute,theu.labforsystemsleadershipenablesleaderstoaddressthedeepersourcesoftoday’scomplexsocietalchallenges.Asthefigureaboveindicates,today’sglobalchallengesrequirenewstructures,andnewmindsets,newsourcesofawareness and creativity across social systems. The u.lab supports leaders tooperatefromthesedeeperlevelsby:

1. Co-convening cross-sector innovation labs for leaders in business,government,andcivilsociety

2. Supporting place-based hubs, where change makers from diversebackgrounds come together to prototype solutions to challenges that theyneedeachothertosolve

3. Developing massive capacity building mechanisms that leverage emergingeducationaltechnologies(likeMOOCs!)andusetheminnovelwaystoscalechange

4. Inventingandopenlysharingnewsocial technologies thatcatalyzemassivepositive change towards addressing the ecological, social, and spiritualchallengesofourtime.

The u.lab for systems leadership aims to strengthen the capacity of individuals,communities, institutions and systems to respond to the increasing flow ofdisruptivechallenges–notthroughasingleintervention,butthroughaninnovation

ecosystem that activates the dormant potential of aspiring social entrepreneurs,changemakerswithinorganizations,andcommunitiesaroundtheworld.Forthisgrowingnetwork,weofferchangelabsfocusedonkey“acupuncturepoints”for economic transformation, support a network of hubs, create and freelydistribute social technologies for profound innovation and offer capacity buildingmechanisms–thefirstofwhichistheu.lab0xcourseyouareabouttobegin.

u.labonedX–HowitworksThe capacity building mechanisms mentioned above are offered through edX.Currently,weoffertwocourses(andareintheprocessofdevelopingmore).Hereisanoverviewofhowtheywork.

• u.lab 0x is a self-paced course which means the entire course is alwaysavailable and anyone can take it at any time, completing it at anypace. 0xintroducesyoutothekeyconceptsthatin1x,youwillpracticeinyourownlocalcontext.

• u.lab1xrunsannuallyinSeptember.ThenextcoursebeginsSeptember8th,

2016.Allu.lab1xparticipantsmustcomplete0xasapre-requisite.Unlike0x,u.lab 1x is a globally facilitated eight-week course in which enrolledparticipantsgothroughthecoursetogether,oneweekatatime.U.lab1xisasignificantlydifferentcourse than0x– it is farmoreexperiential,dialogue-based, and action oriented. During 1x, participants form hubs and peercoaching circles, go on learning journeys and empathywalks in their localcommunities,andparticipate in livesessions facilitatedby thecourse teamfrom MIT and around the world. In 2015, over 75,000 people from 183countries enrolled in u.lab 1x, making it a truly global community ofchangemakers.

• u.lab2x(indevelopment)aseven-weekcourseforpeoplewhohavebeen

inspired by u.lab 1x and want to take the seeds that emerge from thatexperience and move them to scale. u.lab 2x will showcase examples ofawareness-basedsocialchange inthesocialsystemsofmanycountriesandcultures.Thecoursewill illuminatetheconditions,principles,andpracticesthatenablecollectiveshiftsfromego-systemtoeco-systemawareness.Eachweek,wewillshareexamples fromoneof thekey“acupuncturepoints” forsocietal transformation: eco-systems, business, finance, technology,wellbeing,health,education,andgovernance.

AdamYukelsonAdam is an Action Research Fellow at the Presencing Institute. In addition to co-facilitatingu.labandthedigitalarchitecture,hewritesabout,filmsandhelpsdeliverTheoryU-basedinitiativesthataimtocreatemoresustainable,awareandinclusiveeconomies.

DaynaCunninghamDayna is Executive Director of the Community Innovators Lab (CoLab) at MIT.DaynawaspreviouslyanAssociateDirectorattheRockefellerFoundationandhasalso worked as a voting rights lawyer with the NAACP Legal Defense andEducationalFund.

KelvyBirdKelvy is a graphic facilitator specializing in systemic mapping of content withincollaborativeandmulti-stakeholderenvironments.

JulieArtsJulieisaneconomist,workinginternationallyasaTheoryUpractitioner,designingand hostingmulti-stakeholder transition processes and leadership programs. Herrecentworkhasfocusedonimprovingqualityof lifeforpeoplewithdisabilitiesinBelgium,developing innovative solutions forwaterquality inTheNetherlands, anODchangeprocessforTragerInternationalanda1-yearClimateChangeLeadershipprograminBurundi,Africa.

ArawanaHayashiArawana’spioneeringworkasachoreographer,performerandeducator isdeeplysourced incollaborative improvisation. She currently heads the creation of SocialPresencingTheater(SPT)forthePresencingInstitute.WorkingwithOttoScharmerand colleagues at the Presencing Institute, she brings her background in the arts,meditationandsocialjusticetocreating“socialpresencing”thatmakesvisiblebothcurrentrealityandemergingfuturepossibilities.

LiliXuBrandtLili facilitates innovation. She enjoys exploring the dynamic tension betweenentrepreneurial and systemic forces by enabling deeper individual and collectivecreativityincommunitycontextsinChinaandbeyond.

GradingIfyouaretaking0xforaverifiedcertificate,thereareafewactivitiesyouwillneedtocompleteinordertopassthecourse.Thisincludeswatchingthevideos,completingthejournalingexercisesandsurveys,anduploadingyourphotoorvideoattheendofthecourse.Becausetherearesofewrequirementstocomplete0x,youwillneedtocompletealloftheminordertoearnacertificate.ItisuptoyoutocompletetheCheck-insattheendofeachsectionandtheCertificatecompletionsectioninthefinalmodulewhereweaskyoutoself-reportyourprogress.
