Students gain practical experience, develop a network of contacts, and obtain a better understanding of careers in their field. This program allows students the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills developed in the classroom in a practical work environment, enhancing both the academic and employment portions of their University career. Each four month Co-operative Education/ Internship work term is registered as a Co- operative Education or Internship course. Evaluation of the Co-operative Education/ Internship course/work term is a faculty responsibility and is based on successful completion of a work report and satisfactory work performance. Work performance is monitored by a Career Services Advisor and the employer. Pattern Students in the Co-operative Education/ Internship program complete the normal academic curriculum while integrating a number of work terms into their program. Work terms and study sessions are full time and all students receive a salary while on a work term. Co-operative Education students complete a minimum of twelve months and a maximum of twenty months work experience (depending on Faculty/Department requirements), normally alternating periods of work and study starting and ending on an academic session. Internship students complete twelve to sixteen months continuous work experience between their third and fourth academic years. Co-operative Education/Internship programs are designed to expose students to a realistic work environment with employment occurring in all seasons of the year. Each Co-operative Education/Internship position is evaluated as a suitable learning opportunity by the University and students continue to interact with the University for the duration of their employment. Each four- month work term is registered as a Co- operative Education/Internship course and non refundable course fees are assessed. Courses are evaluated on a completed requirements/fail basis. Upon successful completion of all program criteria, the Co- operative Education or Internship designa- tion will appear on the student’s academic transcript and degree parchment. Opportunities A variety of employment opportunities exist for Co-operative Education/Internship participants. Positions are offered in business, government, the professions and not-for-profit organizations. The number and variety of work experience positions available and advertised to Co-operative Education and Internship students varies from term to term and some positions are outside of Calgary. IntroductionCo-operative Education and Internship areoptional academic programs that providestudents the opportunity to enhance theireducation by acquiring career related workexperience before graduation. Students areencouraged to start developing the neces-sary skills and abilities before applying to theCo-operative Education/Internship program.

Students have the option of applying on Co-operative Education/Internship positionsadvertised through Career Services, findingtheir own job and having it approved as asuitable learning opportunity, or applying forcredit by special assessment on workexperience previously completed.

Academic RegulationsAdmissionsInformation pages describing each Co-operative Education/Internship program andapplication forms are available at CareerServices, MacEwan Student Centre 188.Information is also available at the Engineer-ing Internship Office, the Haskayne School ofBusiness Career Centre, and the SocialSciences Co-op Office. Students in Bachelorof Arts and Bachelor of Science Co-operativeEducation programs normally apply to Co-operative Education in the second year oftheir program. Direct entry students to theHaskayne School of Business apply byDecember 1 of their second year; transferstudents apply by May 1 of the year that theyapply to the business school, normally theend of their second year. Students inEngineering and Computer ScienceInternship programs apply in third year.

Students should be aware that the CareerDevelopment Workshop or equivalent is arequirement for admission.

RequirementsStudents must:

• be registered as full-time students

• be registered in a faculty/departmentoffering Co-operative Education/Internship programs

• meet faculty/department GPA andcourse entrance requirements (Consultthe appropriate faculty sections of thisCalendar.)

• complete the Career DevelopmentWorkshop or equivalent.

Career Development Workshops are offeredthroughout the year. Students should registerfor this workshop well in advance at CareerServices.

Note: Students entering the HaskayneSchool of Business are required to completea Co-op Orientation in lieu of the CareerDevelopment Workshop.

Students applying to Co-operative Educa-tion/Internship should also be aware of thefollowing:

1. Students must be legally permitted towork in Canada.

2. Students who are registered in com-bined degree programs can be eligiblefor Co-operative Education/Internshipprograms if one of the majors is in afaculty or department in which a Co-operative Education/Internship programis offered.

3. Students may be required to attend apersonal interview with Co-operativeEducation/Internship and/or the facultyto decide admissibility. Students will becontacted regarding the interview.

4. The University reserves the right torefuse admission to a Co-operativeEducation/Internship program onacademic or other grounds.

5. Transfer students from other universitieswill be considered for admission to theCo-operative Education/Internshipprogram. Please refer to the applicationdeadlines for the Co-operative Educa-tion/Internship program. Transferstudents applying to the HaskayneSchool of Business apply to the Co-

operative Education/Internship programat the same time as they are applying tothe Haskayne School of Business. Alltransfer students should complete oneacademic session at the University ofCalgary prior to a work term.

Application ProcessStudents must submit a completed Co-operative Education/Internship StudentApplication form by the appropriate deadlinedate. For more information on the applicationprocess, students should contact CareerServices, the Engineering Internship Office,the Haskayne School of Business CareerCentre or the Social Sciences Co-op Office.Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Applications for admission are reviewed bythe faculty/department.

Admitted students pay an admission fee of$50 to the Fees Office and are given accessto the Co-op/Internship job postings.

Admission Appeal ProcedureStudents who believe there has been anerror in the assessment regarding thesuitability of their admission to the programshould contact the Faculty office. Studentswho cannot resolve the appeal with thefaculty may submit a formal appeal. Outlinethe grounds for the appeal and the remedybeing sought in a letter to the Registrar witha copy to the Director of Career Services.

No student whose application is in theappeal process will be allowed to apply forCo-operative Education/Internship positionsuntil a formal decision on the appeal hasbeen made.

RegistrationCourse RegistrationRegistration in Co-operative Education/Internship course(s) occurs when the studentaccepts a position with an organization andcompletes the Placement and CourseRegistration form. Students who haveaccepted a placement obtained through theCo-operative Education/Internship place-ment process are required to fill out theirPlacement and Course Registration form atCareer Services immediately. The com-pleted Placement and Course Registrationform will result in the student being regis-tered into the appropriate course(s) byCareer Services and the appropriate fee willbe payable.

Students registered in a Co-operativeEducation or Internship course are consid-ered “full-time students” by the University forthe purpose of student loans, Students’Union fees and Student Health and DentalInsurance coverage. Because of RevenueCanada’s policy regarding the Education TaxAmount, Co-operative Education andInternship students are not classified as fullor part time on the T22 02A form issued bythe University and do not qualify for the

Course WorkPlanning Work Terms andAcademic SessionsPlease refer to the appropriate Facultysection in this Calendar for information onthe number and scheduling of work terms.

It is the student’s responsibility to plan workterms and academic sessions in relation tocourse availability. The University cannotguarantee all courses will be available in allsessions.

Both Co-operative Education and Internshipprograms should start and end with anacademic session. Students in Co-operativeEducation programs normally alternatebetween periods of work and study. Workperiods can be four months or eight months(two consecutive work terms) starting inJanuary, May and September. Students insome programs may do three consecutivework terms. Co-operative Educationprograms with three or four work terms havea maximum of two spring/summer workterms. Co-operative Education programswith five work terms have a maximum of twoconsecutive, spring/summer work terms andthree summer work terms in total.

Internship programs are a minimum oftwelve and a maximum of sixteen consecu-tive months.

Co-operative Education andInternship CoursesEach four-month Co-operative Education/Internship work term is registered as a Co-operative Education/Internship course. Co-operative Education/Internship courses arein addition to the normal requirements for adegree program.

Each work term (Co-operative Education/Internship course) is approximately fourmonths in duration. Courses are graded on aCompleted Requirements/Fail (CR/F) basisand this grade is not included in the calcula-tion of the grade point average.

Once students are registered in a Co-operativeEducation/Internship course (i.e., haveaccepted a placement), they are committedand expected to fulfill their commitment. If theplacement accepted is for more than one four-month work term, students are registered inthe appropriate number of Co-operativeEducation/Internship courses and arecommitted to complete all of them.

Students cannot withdraw from a Co-operative Education/Internship course (orleave a work term/placement) withoutpermission from both Co-operative Educa-tion/Internship and the Faculty. (SeeWithdrawal Policies.)

Transfer Credit for Co-operativeEducation/Internship CoursesStudents transferring to the University ofCalgary from another university, or transfer-ring from one program to another, should

consult with the faculty and Career Servicesregarding possible transfer credits. Toreceive a degree with “Co-operativeEducation” or “Internship” designation,students must complete a minimum of onefour month work term under the University ofCalgary. Some faculties may require morethan the minimum of one work term andeach faculty determines the maximumnumber of transfer credits allowed.

Credit by Special AssessmentStudents who feel that they have previousrelevant work experience and who wish toreceive formal university credit may apply forcredit “by special assessment.” Studentsshould consult Career Services for instruc-tions regarding the application and reviewprocess. Prior work experience will beevaluated by Career Services and the facultyin which the student is registered. Studentsgranted credit “by special assessment” willbe assessed the course fees for Co-operative Education/Internship courses.

Student StandingCo-operative Education/Internship Course EvaluationEvaluation of the Co-operative Education/Internship course/work term is a facultyresponsibility and is based on successfulcompletion of a work term report andsatisfactory job performance. Job perform-ance is monitored by a Career ServicesAdvisor and the employer.

If a student receives unsatisfactory perform-ance or is asked to leave employment by anemployer, the University will investigate thesituation and determine the appropriategrade. If a student is asked to leaveemployment for “just cause,” a grade of “F”will be given and the student will be requiredto withdraw from the Co-operative Educa-tion/Internship program. The student will notreceive Co-operative Education/Internshipdesignation and a permanent notation will beplaced on the transcript of record that thestudent was required to withdraw from theCo-operative Education/Internship program.

Students who receive a grade of “F” in a Co-operative Education/Internship coursebecause they did not meet the work termreport requirement will be required towithdraw from the Co-operative Education/Internship program and will not receive Co-operative Education/Internship designation.

Maintenance RequirementsStudents must meet minimum GPA andcourse requirements established by facultyand maintain full-time status on academicsessions. Students who do not meet theserequirements will be required to withdrawfrom the Co-operative Education/Internshipprogram.

GraduationStudents who successfully complete the Co-operative Education/Internship program as

required by the faculty in which they areregistered will receive Co-operative Educa-tion or Internship designation on theirtranscripts and degree parchment.

Fees and ExpensesAdmission fee: $50

Course fees are assessed for each Co-operative Education/Internship course at thetime that the course is registered. Fees arepayable on the normal fee deadlines.

Co-operative Education and Internshipcourse fees are as follows.

• Four month Co-operative Educationwork term/course: $345

• Four month Internship work term/course:$345

• Maximum number of work terms/courses for which fees are payable:three

• Total Fees Payable for a completeprogram (excluding Students’ Unionfees, Health and Dental Plan anddonation): $1035

Co-operative Education/Internship coursefees are non-refundable and are due andpayable, even if the student subsequentlywithdraws from the course(s) or is requiredto withdraw from the Co-operative Educa-tion/Internship program. (See WithdrawalPolicies.)

In addition to the Co-operative Education/Internship course fees, other fees includingfull-time Students’ Union fees will beassessed. Campus Recreation and Athleticfees are optional. Students may opt out ofHealth and Dental Insurance in the Fall andWinter Sessions with proof of alternatecoverage. Students who register for otherUniversity courses while on a work term, willbe assessed other course fees on a fee percourse basis. Students should refer to theFees section of this Calendar for moreinformation.

Withdrawal PoliciesThe Co-operative Education/Internshipprogram strongly values the commitmentthat is made between students and Co-op/internship Employers. Our withdrawalpolicies have been set to encouragestudents to be accountable for their commit-ments.

Students cannot withdraw from a Co-operative Education/Internship course (orleave a work term/placement) withoutpermission from both Co-operative Educa-tion/Internship and the faculty.

Permission is only granted in cases ofserious illness, domestic affliction, or foracademic issues. Students who receivepermission to withdraw will receive credit forcompleted course/work terms. They will bewithdrawn from the current registeredcourse/work term. They will also be droppedfrom registered course/work terms not yetstarted and no fees will be charged for these

Withdrawal with Permission(a) Student contacts Career Services or

administrators or department;

(b) A University representative meets withthe student and employer to investigateand try to resolve issues when feasibleor appropriate and seek a resolution;

(c) When the issue meets the criteria aboveand cannot be resolved, faculty approvalcan be given for the student to withdrawwithout penalty.

Withdrawal without PermissionStudents who leave a work term (withdrawfrom a Co-operative Education or Internshipcourse) without permission will be assigneda grade of “F” on the course and will bedropped from subsequent courses. No feeswill be charged for the subsequent courses.

In addition students will be required towithdraw from the Co-operative Education/Internship program and will not receive Co-operative Education/Internship designation,notwithstanding the fact that they hadcompleted the minimum work term require-ments for the program. A permanent notationwill be placed on the transcript of record thatthe student was required to withdraw fromthe Co-operative Education/Internshipprogram.
