A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR I know of a family which has for years spent a Saturday in December finding and bringing home the right Christmas tree. They do not buy a tree off from a lot. Instead, they prefer to go to a tree farm. There they spend a lot of time selecting the tree that is just right--not too tall, not too thin, with just the right shape. Then the tree is cut down and brought home. Last year the choice was very difficult. Not because there weren't a lot of beautiful trees available. The problem was that the youngest member of the family, little Jeannine, didn't like any of the really pretty ones. Her attitude was different. She said, "I'm looking for a tree that needs me. Then I'll make it beautiful." Little Jeannine was reflecting the attitude of God. I'm so glad that God doesn’t cater to the beautiful people, the wealthy or educated, the morally superior. God takes us as we are, with our ugliness and selfishness, then takes up residence within our hearts and minds. Gradually he makes us beautiful, from the inside out. The shepherds of Bethlehem remind me that God does not favor the beautiful people. The shepherds were as common as the sheep they cared for, and no cleaner. They were the rednecks of Judea. Shepherds as a group were so notoriously dishonest that the law courts of that day did not allow them to give testimony. Yet, the shepherds were the only group which received a personal invitation to come view the baby Jesus. Let's consider what we learn from the shepherds. First, God cares deeply about the least, the lost, and the marginalized. The shepherds occupied the lowest rung on the social ladder. No reputable banker would give them a loan. God seemed determined that their kind would be found by the manger of Bethlehem. The second thing the shepherds teach us is this: The first description of the Messiah is "Savior." The angel’s good news to the shepherds was this: "For to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." (Luke 2:11) Matthew tells us that when father Joseph was visited by an angel, he was given this message concerning Mary: "...she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." The third thing the shepherds teach us is: You can come to Jesus empty-handed. Yes, the wise Men brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. But the shepherds brought nothing but hum-ble and contrite hearts and a glimmer of faith. God is unlike any earthly dignitary. He is not impressed by our achievements or credentials or resumes. In approaching Him, we need no letters of referral. He welcomes any-one with a humble and caring heart and a glimmer of faith. There is a fourth and final thing the shepherds teach us: Once you meet Jesus, you can't help but tell others about Him. Luke tells us that after the shepherds saw Jesus " ...they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child; and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them." Im-agine that! The first evangelists on earth were those lowly, foul-smelling shepherds. They were the very first to say: "We have seen the Lord!" God whispers to every person that is messed up by sin, to every reject and loser, even to shepherds and people like you and me: "I wish you were my daughter" or "I wish you were my son." This Christmas let’s remember Jesus is there for each of us! We need Him and he makes us beautiful! Merry Christmas! Pastor Tim

The staff at First English Lutheran Church makes every effort possible to visit members when they are hospitalized

If you are staying at Aurora Hospital you will need to let the church know of your stay. AURORA HOSPITAL does not NOTIFY US of any members hospitalized.

If staying at Mercy Hospital you need to inform the hospital that you would like your church to be notified of your stay. If we do not receive a call from you or the hospital we are to understand that the members do not want a visit. Mercy Medical makes their telephone call to the church early in the morning, so if you enter the hospital later in the day, we may not be informed until the next day.

Each individual or someone from the family should make sure that the hospital is properly informed if you would like a pastoral visit. We understand some people do not desire to be visited when they are in the hospital, and we will respect those wishes.

Save the little aluminum tabs from all kinds of cans: soda, some pet food, canned fruits, vegetables, and more. Bring them to church; there is a container next to the basement steps. Revenue from recycling these tabs helps provide a “home away from home” for families (many of whom come from the Fox Valley area) whose seriously ill children are undergoing medical treatment in the Milwaukee area.

Join the Mary Martha Circle for their Christmas Bible Study Luncheon Tuesday, December 3rd at the Roxy at 9:30 a.m. and eating at 11:00 a.m. Paula Rae Rost will be leading us with a Christmas Carol Sing-a-long. Gift exchange of $5.00, if you give one you get one. Menu: $12.00 tax and tip included. Selections are: 1) Broiled or deep fried haddock with baked potato. 2) Chicken salad on croissant with fruit. 3) Chopped sirloin with baked potato. All meals include choice of soup or salad and coffee. *if special diet please let us know on sign-up sheet.

Because we are in the season of Advent, which means “waiting,” let’s pray for the Biblical virtue of patience for our prayer partner children. As we wait for the coming of our Lord, we should remember to have patience with those people and situations that make us wait—sometimes much longer than we

like! As we all know, that’s not always easy to do! The corresponding Bible verse for this month is Colossians 3:12 – “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe your-selves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

We have also had some new students enter our Sunday school this year, and we don’t have prayer partners for them yet. If you would like to have a specific child for whom you can pray, please let Debbie know, and she will assign one of them to you. If you’re not sure what being a Prayer Partner entails, just ask Debbie!

Our 2nd annual Ladies’ Advent Tea is coming!

On Sunday, December 1st, from 4-6 p.m. (and, yes, the Packers play at noon that day), we will

celebrate the beginning of the Advent season. Bring your friends, neighbors, and relatives and take a couple of hours out of your busy schedule to focus on the true reason for the season. We will learn the meaning of the Advent candles, listen to musical entertainment by the Possibilities and other guest artists, and make an easy craft project. Because they did such a WONDERFUL job last year, we would again like to have the men of the congregation serve the ladies during the tea. The tea is supported by a Thrivent Action Team grant, so there is no cost to attend.

Please sign up on the Minnesota Street or Spirit of Hope bulletin boards so that we can plan accord-ingly. You can also reserve your spot by calling the office at 231-9890 or e-mailing Debbie at [email protected]. Also, if you have any teacup/saucer sets or teapots that you no longer want, we are always looking to add to our collection for the Advent Tea.

Christmas ~ A Time for Giving and Sharing The holiday season will soon be upon us and once again FELC will support the Christmas Food Box Project. This project has been a great success for many years because of the faithful donors who have given from the heart. Our hope is to provide a blessed Christian present to many individuals/families that could use a little extra help this year. Request a basket:

Call the church office 231-9890 from November 1 to December 13th. Provide number of persons in household, delivery address, telephone number. If children in household (15 years and younger), provide ages, gender, sizes. NOTE: If children in household, requests are needed by Dec. 6th so our youth can purchase and

wrap presents. Donation options:

The Gathering Tree will be available for collecting food items and will be placed by the Minnesota Street entrance starting in November.

Put your donation in a giving envelope, mark it as Christmas Food Box Project and put in collection plate. Church office will accept money donations. If you donate $60.00, you will receive a beautiful hand painted ornament by Barbara McClain. Excess money received will go towards the food pantry that FELC supports.

Pack and Delivery:

Packing food will be Friday, December 20th, starting at noon. Delivery of baskets will be on Saturday morning, December 21st, starting at 8:30 a.m. Many volunteers are needed to deliver baskets. If you would like to help, please sign-up in the church office or contact Cheryl Curtin at 379-8633.

Thank you in advance for your help!

YOUTH SILENT AUCTION Gift Baskets

FELC youth need your help with their upcoming Silent Auction Fundraiser. This is the largest fundraiser of the year for the youth! Please consider donating filled baskets, empty baskets to be filled, items to be placed in baskets or a monetary donation. You may drop the items off at the church office up until November 30th.

Our Sunday school students are now practicing and will present their Christmas pro-gram, The First Christmas, on Saturday, December 14, at the 5 p.m. worship service. Please come to church that evening and support all of our students. In addition to the program, the high school youth have their Silent Auction going on that night and the women of the church will hold their annual bake sale.

OFFICIAL ACTS NOVEMBER 2019

Simply Giving Makes it Easy! First English Lutheran Church would like to say thanks for supporting the church throughout the year with your time, talent and financial contributions. We’d also like to offer an option to make your life easier. Now your gift to God can be regular and

“off the top”. It’s safe, convenient and reliable - no more remembering to bring a check or catching up after you’ve been away! Consistent offerings are important to fulfilling our mission and Simply Giving is a great way to make it happen.

Simply Giving is an electronic funds transfer program. (EFT) You may already be using EFT or other payments to be automatically withdrawn from your checking or savings account. There is no cost to you or the church. Thrivent is picking up all the costs associated with it. If you choose to participate, the en-rollment forms are available at the church office. If you have any questions, they may be directed to our

treasurer, Steve Seidl Thank you for your prayerful consideration of this giving opportunity.
