In the field of conservation, we often think about ecosystems – the connection between the smallest organism and the network of life that surrounds it.
At the Grand River Conservation Foundation that link is important, but we foster broader connections too.
As the charitable partner of the Grand River Conservation Authority, we channel
donations to conservation projects that would otherwise not be possible – projects that strengthen the link between nature and the places we call home.
As our population grows and we feel the impact of climate change, forging these bonds has never been more important.
When families get active together on trails or at GRCA Nature Centre programs, they
grow to understand and appreciate nature together. When trees are planted, we restore a vital connection between the health of our environment and our own wellness. The work we do today helps build the path toward a healthy future for generations to come.
The year 2015 marked our 50th anniversary, and all of our work reflected the growing relationship between care for our natural
world and the people who live in it.

“One of the key features of the e3 program is a partnership between our school and the GRCA. The GRCA provides a beautiful outdoor classroom venue, the Apps’ Mill Nature Centre, for our students to do the majority of their outdoor learning.”

It’s the “three R’s” – reading, writing and arithmetic – that form the backbone of education at most schools. This isn’t the case for Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students at Pauline Johnson Collegiate in Brantford, where it’s the “three E’s” that guide their school days: ecology, environment and education. The primary goal of this program, called “e3”, is to get young people outdoors to learn.
Apps’ Mill Nature Centre helps deliver many of the environment-related SHSM certification classes including watershed management, GPS, species identification and ORCKA canoeing certification.
In 2015, the GRCF completed a campaign that raised almost $300,000 to ensure students of all ability levels can actively take part in programs at the nature centre.

Luther Marsh is where it all begins. Located near Grand Valley in the Grand River headwaters area, it is one of the best bird-watching spots in Ontario, with a rich array of wildlife. But it’s much more than just that: at 1,400 hectares, Luther Lake stores water to be used by people downstream year-round. During dry summers, this is especially important.
For Don Vallery, downstream means Belwood Lake, where his family’s business, Highland Pines Campground, is located. Don has supported the GRCA’s outdoor education and headwaters restoration programs for many years.
In 2015, donations were used to protect Luther Marsh’s native ecosystem from invasive species, ensuring that this special natural place is protected.

Frasson, a long-time supporter of the GRCF through her family’s W.C. Wood Foundation, believes that education is key to conservation, rehabilitation and preservation. “It is so critical that we build a proper nature centre — one that will foster a love and respect for the outdoors for generations to come,” she said.
In 2015, the GRCA began creating the trail network, pollinator gardens and ponds that will surround the future nature centre. These diverse and vibrant new learning areas will also serve as a new hub for the many visitors to Guelph Lake Park.

A ribbon of water winds right through the heart of
Waterloo Region. And as a group of 45 students and staff
from the Accelerator Centre and the Conrad Business,
Entrepreneurship and Technology Centre (University of
Waterloo) paddled along it, they felt as though they were far
removed from the busy tech hub they call home.
“It’s incredible to think many of our students live within
minutes of this great resource, yet have had very little
chance to appreciate what a huge asset the river is to our
community,” said Howard Armitage, Founding Director of the
Conrad Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology Centre.
Recreation opportunities on the Grand, and at nearby Laurel
Creek Conservation Area, are vital for fostering creativity.
In 2015, work got underway to expand the trail network at
Laurel Creek, a great resource for our community’s innovators.

Wayne Fyffe started his career as a water quality biologist, and
the GRCF’s work has always been of interest to him. “My wife Pat
and I are fortunate to live right on the Grand in Paris and we can
see how the river changes throughout the year. Connecting our
community with projects like tree planting at the new Forest in the
City in Brantford is so important, especially when young people
are involved. We are creating a beautiful, balanced and healthy
landscape to enjoy – today and for future generations.”

The Grand is a daily part of Wayne Knox’s life. As a longtime
resident and General Manager of the Grand Erie Business Centre,

Each year, the GRCF provides financial support to community groups and students who are playing an important role in keeping our watershed healthy. Through the generosity of our donors, in 2015 the GRCF awarded:

*GRCF is primarily a project fundraising organization. Disbursements vary each year according to project timelines. With donor permission, funding for some projects is accumulated over a multi-year period and disbursed as needed.
