Week Without Violence 2019, 10/14-18/19
Week Without Violence is a global movement with YWCAs across the country and the world to
end violence against womxn and girls, and communities of color. We know that not all violence
is acknowledged or responded to equally, and that some survivors and communities go
unrecognized altogether. That’s why, for more than 20 years, YWCA has set aside one week in
October as Week Without Violence.
This year, the YWCA Berkeley/Oakland will be working to raise awareness about the ways that
colonial, systemic, institutional, and all other forms of violence disproportionately impact Black,
Indigenous, and people of color, and will work to uplift and mobilize our community to support
the organizing work of local organizations on the frontlines to end racial and gender-based
violence and are honored to be collaborating with Mixed at Berkeley Recruitment and Retention
Center, the Mauna Kea Protectors at UC Berkeley, the UC Berkeley Multicultural Community
Center, and the UC Berkeley Reclaim Campaign.
Tag us on social media using #WWV19, #MMIW, #VAWA4ALL, and #ywcaberkeleyoakland
*Our use of “girls” and “women” is inclusive of all cis and trans womxn, non-binary, gender
non-conforming, gender queer, and any female-identified folks.

or pursuing a Masters in Social Welfare. Our mentoring program, La Red de Apoyo, pairs
Latinx UCB undergrads with current Latinx MSW students for the academic year.
We ask that mentees commit to participating for the remainder of the academic year; that they
meet with their mentor once per month, and that they attend the Mentor/Mentee Orientation
slated for Saturday, November 2, 2019 from 12-2PM.

2019 UC Davis Pre-Health Conference, 10/19/19
This conference is one of the largest pre-health conferences in the nation. Each year 3000+ pre-
health students come to the UC Davis campus to explore different health related career paths,
experience hands-on healthcare activities via interactive workshops, and connect with other pre-
health students and health professionals from around the nation.
Additionally, we aim to have over 200 exhibitors from health professions schools from across
the nation. This gives advisors and students an opportunity to ask tough questions, connect with
representatives. The Pre-Health Fair takes place from 10 am to 3 pm, so there is plenty of time to
both visit the Fair and attend a couple of workshops.
The schedule for this year’s Conference is as follows:
7-9 am: Check In & Breakfast
9-10 am: Keynote Speaker: Dr. Piri Ackerman-Barger, PhD, RN
10-11:15 am: Pre-Health Fair
11:30 am-12:30 pm: Lunch
12:45-1:45 pm: Workshop Session I
2-3 pm: Workshop Session II
3:15-4:15 pm: Workshop Session III
Group registration is available for 10 or more, which reduces the ticket cost to $10 per person.
Please encourage your students to purchase their tickets early, as we have sold out in the past.
Bus or shuttle parking is available. Those who drive cars and park in the nearby garage will need
to pay for campus parking at $9. Registration fees include: access to the conference, a t-shirt,
bag, breakfast and lunch if they choose a sponsored lunch. Lunch may also be purchased on their
own or through Eventbrite.

Undergraduate Certificate in New Media
Miscellaneous Opportunities: Week of October 14, 2019
9
Applications due: November 1, 2019
The Berkeley Center for New Media is an interdisciplinary research center that studies and
shapes media transition and emergence from diverse perspectives. Through critical thinking and
making, we cultivate technological equity and fairness in our classrooms, in our communities,
and on the internet.
A new media certification provides enhanced skills in analyzing and/or designing future media
with an awareness of historical, social, and cultural perspectives that might not be visible from a
single discipline. Emphasizing a critical understanding of the nature and implications of new
media, our students draw on theories and methodologies from the arts, the humanities and social
sciences, and science and engineering, to innovate while questioning the impact of new media on
the human experience.
Our students are eligible for a host of opportunities through the Center, including our
prestigious Eugene Jarvis fellowships, research support, and unique experiences with the world-
class speakers we bring to campus.
We are accepting applications for admission to the Designated Emphasis (DE) in New
Media Ph.D. program, the Graduate Certificate in New Media M.A. program, and
the Undergraduate Certificate in New Media program. All applications for Fall 2019
admittance are due November 1, 2019.

When clients get stuck in shame, the most powerful way to help them get unstuck may be to
activate their imagination. In the Imaginal Realm, logic and time are fluid and flexible. What
actually happened can be explored and changed. What was stuck in the cognitive realm can be
reexamined and shifted. Shaming situations from the past can be revisited and resolved. In this
workshop, we will utilize techniques from Drama Therapy, Focusing, Expressive Arts Therapy,

Jungian creative imagination and Hakomi. We will explore the critical voices and/or the
childhood scenes that are still driving the internal shame dynamic in the client.
You will learn to help clients:
Externalize shame so that it can be worked with directly.
Work with roles, parts and shame-based introjects.
Access strength, resilience, inner resources and role repertoire.
Find a deeper understanding by working with objects you already have in your office.
Utilize imaginal techniques to give the shame back, so that it stays in the Imaginal
Realm.
Once the shame is worked through in the Imaginal Realm, the client can interact with the world
differently.
There is no prerequisite for this course. It can be taken by itself or as part of a sequence.
TO REGISTER, please visit the Schedule page at http://www.CenterforHealingShame.com.
