The Lady with the Lamp

eSynapse, Vol 24, No 1 (2009)

The Lady with the Lamp Moves

Over a fourhour period onWednesday, January 7, 2009,the 2400pound statue ofFlorence Nightingale wascarefully moved from theCollege of Nursing to the mainlevel of the Spencer S. EcclesHealth Sciences Library whereshe will remain as a welcomeguest during the College ofNursing's twoyear buildingrenovation.

Carved in Italy fromPortuguese rose marble bysculptor Avard TennysonFairbanks, and dedicated onMay 23, 1975, the statueholds a lamp in its right handand nursing notes in its left. Itportrays her just as journalistand biographer Edward TyasCook wrote in The Life ofFlorence Nightingale(published in 1913),

"She is a 'ministering angel' without any exaggeration in thesehospitals, and as her slender form glides quietly along eachcorridor, every poor fellow's face softens with gratitude at thesight of her. When all the medical officers have retired for thenight and silence and darkness have settled down upon thosemiles of prostrate sick, she may be observed alone, with a littlelamp in her hand, making her solitary rounds."

Victorian sentimentality aside, Florence Nightingale (18201910) was notonly the founder of nursing as a profession, but was also an innovativehealth statistician who made the numbers understandable for bureaucrats.During the disastrous 18531856 Crimean War, she was able to convincethe British Army that its soldiers' scandalously high death rates were due topoor sanitation, horrific overcrowding, and poor nutrition, ideas that laterchanged patient care in English hospitals.

She was dubbed The Lady with the Lamp, following an article in the Times

Reduced Library Hours

The Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library is announcing new libraryhours for spring semester. Due to the "soft cut" of 9% and the impendinglarger, permanent cuts in the new fiscal year, it was decided that one placeto reduce expenditures was library hours. Usage statistics show that latenight and some weekend hours are not as necessary with the Spencer F.and Cleone P. Eccles Health Sciences Education Building serving as 24/7study space for students, and with electronic reserve readings andresources available online.

The Hope Fox Eccles Clinical Library has also transitioned to primarilyelectronic health sciences resources. In addition, consumeroriented healthinformation and assistance is requested most frequently during daytime andearly evening hours. Clinical Library hours are Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m.to 8:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

If you have comments, suggestions, questions or concerns please contactEccles Library Director Jean Shipman; 8015818771.
