“I want every business in our city to succeed. Two of my top priorities are employment and business growth in Milwaukee, and that’s why we have expanded our goals and policies for economic inclusion. We have to ensure that the boom happening in the heart of the city also reaches all of our neighborhoods.”
“City government has a role to play in creating opportunity for small businesses. Our work with City Accelerator will help Milwaukee increase economic inclusion and equity. This Buying Plan is one part of a bigger effort, and I hope you find it helpful in doing business with the City of Milwaukee.”

City AcceleratorIn June of 2018, the Citi Foundation and Living Cities Today announced the expansion of the City Accelerator program to five additional U.S. cities – Charlotte, Chicago, Los Angeles, Memphis, and our great city – Milwaukee!! We will work with the four other cities over the next year to refine our approach to procurement spending by pursuing at least one new strategy to increase the diversity of municipal vendors and contractors and direct more spending to local minority-owned businesses. This collaboration supports the goal of City Accelerator to support innovative local government projects within and across cities that have a significant impact on the lives of residents, especially those with low incomes. With support by the Citi Foundation and Living Cities, $500,000 will be distributed to Charlotte, Chicago, Los Angeles, Memphis, and Milwaukee to support inclusion in city procurement.
Our goals throughout this project are as follow:
1) Increase availability and capacity of city certified Small Business Enterprise (SBE) Firms and business capacity building
2) Implement program and policy changes to foster equity and inclusion in procurement
3) Rebrand the City’s outreach efforts to SBE Firms
To that end, the creation of this buying plan positions the City to support goal #2 by creating a forecast of potential contracting to give small businesses lead time to prepare for upcoming contracting opportunities.
