Introduction As motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, we share responsibilities for the safe movement of
people and goods on city streets. Understanding the factors related to traffic crashes
can help our efforts to improve traffic safety. This report summarizes traffic crash history
for the 2011 calendar year but more than just historical facts the report also tells us how
well people travel safely on city streets. Traffic crashes continue to happen with property
damaged and people injured or killed as a result.
Looking back on 2011, Phoenix saw the second lowest number of traffic crashes in over
20 years. The 22,637 crashes reported in 2011, are 2.7% increased over 2010 which saw
the lowest number of crashes in over 20 years. Phoenix traffic crashes are tied to traffic
volumes which closely follow the state economy. Small economic improvements in 2011
have lead to higher levels of traffic activity and increased risk for collisions.
The number of crashes that resulted in injuries also increased slightly in 2011 and the total
number of people injured increased from 12,143 in 2010 to 12,315 in 2011. Fatal collisions
remained flat at 108 and the number of people killed in those collisions declined from 121
in 2010 to 110 in 2011. Crashes involving motorcycles increased from 495 in 2010 to 573 in
2011 with increases in the number of injuries and the number of fatalities from these
crashes. Crashes involving METRO light rail which saw its third complete year of
operations in 2011 increased from 18 in 2010 to 20 in 2011 including one crash with a
pedestrian. Pedestrians accounted for less than 1/3 of all fatalities with 34 pedestrians
killed during 2011 which is a decrease from pedestrian fatalities in 2010. Unfortunately,
crashes involving bicycles increased in 2011 as did the number of bicyclists injured and
killed during the year.
From an education standpoint, the percentages of run red collisions in 2011 declined
slightly from 2010 at 7.4% of all crashes and the percentage of run stop sign crashes
declined as well for the third year in a row to just over one percent of all crashes. Alcohol
related crashes also declined for the third year in a row to 5.5% of all crashes but alcohol
was a factor in at least 36 fatalities or about a third of all fatal crashes.
We take seriously the human and property damages of individual traffic crashes. Safety
advocates in Phoenix and across the country look to the tragedy of individual crashes to
try to make traveling safer for everyone. This Traffic Collision Summary is part of that
effort.

2011 Phoenix Traffic Collision Facts-at-a-Glance Overall Crashes
Approximately 34 people were injured every day in 2011 as a result of traffic crashes.
Almost 2/3 of all collisions resulted in property damage only. About 27 percent of all collisions occurred between the hours of 3 pm to 6 pm
but only 17 percent of the traffic fatalities occurred during those times. Over 61 percent of fatal crashes occurred during night or twilight hours.
Drivers In 18 percent of all crashes, the at fault driver was between 14 to 21 years of age.
These crashes include 9 fatal and 112 serious injury crashes. From the above crashes, five fatal and 11 serious injury collisions were caused by
young drivers under the influence of alcohol. In just over seven percent of all crashes, the at fault driver was 65 years of age or
older. These crashes include 9 fatal and 74 serious injury crashes.
Light Rail In 2011 there were 20 collisions involving a light rail vehicle. Seventy percent of
these collisions involved vehicles turning in violation of a red arrow and most of these were left turns.
Pedestrians There were 34 pedestrian fatalities and 460 were injured in collisions with motor
vehicles, which is 11 fewer fatalities and 15 more injuries than in 2010. 26 percent of the collisions involved the pedestrian not using the crosswalk.
Bicyclists There were ten bicyclist fatalities and 441 were injured in collisions between
bicycles and motor vehicles, which is two more fatalities and 34 more injuries than in 2010.
Alcohol/Drug-Related 36 people were killed in alcohol-related collisions in 2011 which is seven less than
in 2010. One third of the fatal crashes involved one or more drivers, pedestrians or
bicyclists who had been drinking prior to the crash. 31 percent fatal alcohol-related pedestrian collisions involved a pedestrian being
under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Red Light Running and Other Failure-to-Yield 13 people were killed, and 1,545 were injured in collisions where at least one
vehicle ran a red light 2011. 232 crashes resulted from vehicles running STOP signs, resulting in the death of
one person and injuring 137 others.

Additional Information The 2011 Phoenix Traffic Collision Summary is the annual report of traffic collision statistics from the City of Phoenix. Data used to produce this document were obtained from the Arizona Department of Transportation’s Safety Data Mart (SDM). SDM includes all collisions investigated under Arizona Revised Statutes 28-667 involving motor vehicles on city streets that involve injuries, fatalities, damage to private property in excess of $1,000, or issuance of a citation. Collisions that occur on the freeway system or private property are not included in this report. SDM data may not match statistics reported by other sources.
