Letter from the PresidentTransforming the Richmond community into one of the most physically active regions in the country doesn’t happen overnight by a few people. As Gandhi famously said about transformational change, “We must be the change we want to see happen in the world.”

Throughout these pages, you will find stories of individuals from all corners of the community that are part of a change happening in RVA. The web of interconnections in our active community is amazing. It is seen in our 7,000 volunteers that help their friends, neighbors, co-workers, and complete strangers to live a physically active lifestyle. Or the dedicated individuals who provide funding and volunteer hours to reach the underserved who not only struggle financially but live in communities where there are few options for physical activity. Or the 40,000 people in our Bike Walk RVA database, who are striving to make our region a safer and friendlier place to bike and walk by improving the infrastructure that we move around on a daily basis. Together this wave of people swarming our streets, fitness centers, and parks collectively become Active RVA.

The Sports Backers are trying to be the backbone organization to motivate and inspire this movement of people helping students, co-workers, and neighbors to lead a more active life. There are organizations like the YMCA, companies like CarMax, and schools like Oak Grove Elementary that are taking part in the movement. The Sports Backers don’t control the actions of these various groups. But, we do help to create the positive environment for these organization’s efforts to encourage physical activity to grow and thrive.

As a volunteer for the Sports Backers, helping lead the Marathon Training Team for the past 13 years, I’ve seen the power of individuals setting a goal and working through adversity to reach the finish line. This publication is full of these stories about Richmonders that love our region and make it an awesome place to live and play. Here at the Sports Backers, we always hope the next person we help to live a physically active and healthier life will go on to motivate a whole church congregation to become active or lead a corporate wellness program or simply invite their neighbor to come along for a walk. I hope you will join me in being part of the movement that is sweeping across our region to live an active lifestyle. We really can be the change that we want to see in RVA.

First annual Active RVA Fitness Awards handed out

How fit is RVA? Our grade is in!

We’re all being held accountable! We issued our first annual Richmond Region Fitness Scorecard in February (we got a C+, by the way). We’ve got work to do! We’ll announce this grade annually to measure the region’s progress.

RVA Streets Alive draws large crowds, special guests

RVA Streets Alive! 15,000 people, including Senator Mark Warner and Mayor Dwight Jones, took part in physical activities from aerobics to Zumba on downtown streets along with more than 70 health and fitness vendors.

Board member completes impressive Triple Crown

When Courtney Paulk conquered the 20.2-mile Catalina Channel swim in September, she became the 79th person in the world (and 29th female) to complete the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming (she earlier completed a 28.5-mile Manhattan Island swim and a 21-mile English Channel crossing). That’s impressive!

Anthem Richmond Marathon entries skyrocket to record numbers

The Anthem Richmond Marathon continued its surge in popularity with 19,600 marathon, half marathon, and 8k participants. Inspirational stories were numerous including a feature story in Our Health Magazine on Dewey Reynolds (age 74, above) and Barbara Gray (age 71) for their ageless running accomplishments.

National Black Marathoners Association welcomes record numbers to RVA

The National Black Marathoners Association (NBMA), which serves as a vehicle for Black Americans to meet en masse at a single marathon, hosted its ninth annual gathering at the Anthem Richmond Marathon in November and attracted a record 460 members. NBMA president Tony Reed spoke at area schools about the importance of taking part in fitness and setting goals.

Fran Gilday honored as Volunteer of the Year

It takes a village…to put on an event. And that would make Fran Gilday the Mayor! Fran was honored as the Sports Backers’ Volunteer of the Year. There were 7,000 awesome volunteers to choose from, but Fran stood out. Fran takes off a week of vacation to volunteer at the 10k and marathon expos every year. Yes, she volunteers on the evenings and weekends too!

CarMax Tacky Light Run is the most successful new event in organization’s history!

Not even a downpour could dampen the enthusiasm of Santa and the hearty souls who came out to celebrate our unique new event! Highlighting what’s cool about our community is a Sports Backers trademark. The first annual CarMax Tacky Light Run seized upon RVA’s nationally recognized obsession by attracting over 5,000 illuminated participants.

Mission accomplished!

We wrapped up our “Powering an Active Community” development campaign in November, having raised over $2.3 million to help fund the organization’s priorities. Here campaign chairman Burke King (second from left) is joined by Paul Spicer, Leslie Strickler, and Derek Kung of HDL, Inc., which made the largest single gift to the campaign, a five-year pledge of $500,000.

It’s been just over a year since I joined the Sports Backers team as Director of Bike Walk RVA. As I get ready to buy my first house in the Ginter Park neighborhood of Richmond, I can’t help but reflect on the last whirl wind of a year in Richmond and how far Bike Walk RVA has come in a short time.

Immediately upon arriving in Richmond in March of 2013, I began to plan for Bike Walk RVA’s first big event—a trip to northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., for 50 of the region’s elected officials, public works, planning and parks staff, and the most avid community of walking and biking advocates. Three months later, the trip went off without a hitch: we walked, we biked,

we met with Virginia’s Senators and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor. But most importantly, we got 50 people to experience the safe and comfortable walking and biking environments of Arlington’s Clarendon

neighborhood and Washington’s protected bike lanes. From that point on, when we talk about “safe and comfortable places for walking and biking,” those 50 people know what we are talking about—a huge first step in creating real change.

The spring and summer of 2013 was also spent organizing and formalizing the Greater Richmond Bicycle Coalition, a growing partnership of over 50 Richmond region businesses and advocacy organizations who want to help “build a Richmond region that is bikeable for everyone.” After working through a few growing pains, the Greater Richmond Bicycle Coalition is a functioning non-profit organization with an elected board of directors. The Coalition is currently working toward becoming a one-stop shop for all things bicycle-related in Richmond, including a website that provides users with a calendar of events, resources, and ways to take action to support a bikeable Richmond.

In the fall of 2013, Bike Walk RVA started organizing the Fan, Museum District, and Uptown residents in support of what will be Richmond’s first signature bike project —the Floyd Avenue Bike/Walk Street (also referred to as a “bicycle boulevard”). In November, we hosted a “mobile openhouse,” where 75 community members joined us on a sunny Saturday morning to walk, run, and bike along Floyd Ave. We heard from Jakob Helmboldt, the City’s Pedestrian, Bicycle and Trail Coordinator, about what the new bike/walk street could potentially look like, and then ended at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts with a more formal

sit-down presentation and discussion. Today, the Floyd Ave project is still moving forward with final design.

The year ended with Bike Walk RVA’s second hire, as we brought Brantley Tyndall on board in the role of Community Engagement Coordinator. Brantley was formerly the Alternative Transportation Coordinator at VCU and managed the RamBikes program. So far, Brantley has done a fantastic job raising awareness of Bike Walk RVA’s initiative and organizing advocates and volunteers to help support our mission.

As exciting as 2013 was, 2014 is shaping up to be even more impactful for Bike Walk RVA. We have launched Connect RVA, our multi-year, regional campaign to make Richmond, Chesterfield, Henrico, and Hanover County better places to walk and bike for everyday activities. In Richmond, Connect RVA is a targeted effort to build 20+ miles of new family-friendly bikeways through the city center by 2015, in time for the UCI Road World Championships. And the momentum is already starting to pick up!

It’s been a great ride in RVA so far, and I am looking forward to seeing what’s behind the bend.

It takes a special person to inspire and motivate others to believe in themselves and make positive changes in their lives. Cheryl Lockett Oliver was that special—phenomenal—person for us with the Sports Backers and had a reach that extended well beyond her work here. Her life was cut too short in 2014, but Cheryl’s impact in this world continues through the people she touched, forever changed by their association with her.

Cheryl “officially” started working at the Sports Backers in 2012 to help expand our Kids Run RVA programs to schools in lower income neighborhoods that had not been participating in our free incentive program. By 2013, she was providing hands-on support to seven elementary schools and a Boys & Girls Club. As a result of Cheryl’s persistent efforts, over 530 children raced in the Call Federal Credit Union Marathon, Jr. in the fall free of charge. She also started a new middle school training program for high poverty schools that launched in 2013 and culminated with 57 students participating in the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k.

For Cheryl, it wasn’t just about training and establishing healthy habits for these kids, but it was also about exposing them to something outside of their typical environment. When the National Black Marathoners Association selected the Anthem Richmond Marathon as its destination for its members in 2013 and brought over 460 runners to town, Cheryl took it upon herself to bring run club kids to the group’s banquet to see firsthand other African-Americans who were pursuing running as a vehicle for healthy living.

Affectionately known as “Wonder Woman” for her preferred race day costume, Cheryl began her journey to better fitness when she first joined the Sports Backers Marathon Training Team in 2004 and soon found a passion for coaching others.

As a volunteer coach for the 10k Training Team in the East End, Cheryl led and inspired many to stretch their physical fitness boundaries every Saturday morning in the spring. The Church Hill Crushers—the group’s self-proclaimed moniker—more than doubled in size to 120 participants in 2013 due to her contagious enthusiasm.

Beyond the Sports Backers, Cheryl’s reach was significant. She was a role model and inspiration for other African-American women in the region by her participation and leadership in Black Girls RUN!, Sistas Do Run, and as a trainer at DNA Fitness. Even the parents of her run club kids would become engaged, asking Cheryl how to get started on a fitness routine. Not coincidently, more than a few were “recruited” to the various training programs that Cheryl was involved in, including the 10k training team.

Cheryl’s spirit was captured in a reading of Maya Angelou’s Phenomenal Woman poem at her funeral and her impact epitomized in the way her friends, family, and colleagues chose to remember her. More than 200 people gathered soon after her untimely death for a vigil and three mile run/walk in her honor along Monument Avenue. The City of Richmond dedicated its first Middle School Track and Field Invitational in April to her memory, and in May, Oak Grove-Bellemeade Elementary School held “Cheryl’s Run,” a half-mile run at the school to remember their coach and mentor.

Our phenomenal “Wonder Woman” is irreplaceable, but her legacy can carry on. We can all be change makers for ourselves and the people around us. Choose your own super hero persona and inspire someone near you to walk, run, swim, hike, bike, or just move toward a path to better health.

Pretty women wonder where my

secret lies.I’m not cute or built to suit a

fashion model’s size

But when I start to tell them,

They think I’m telling lies

I say,It’s in the reach of my arms,

The span of my hips,

The stride of my step,The curl of my lips.I’m a woman

Phenomenally.Phenomenal woman,That’s me. – Maya Angelou

The state-of-the-art fitness center hums along on a daily basis with constant activity. Pick-up basketball and soccer games in the gym, yoga and body sculpt classes, racquetball matches, and people making full use of the cardio equipment and free weights. But this isn’t just any fitness center, and there’s one thing that sets it apart: it’s located at the CarMax corporate headquarters in Goochland’s West Creek Business PArk, and it’s a central part of the company’s innovative corporate wellness program.

This commitment to fitness drives CarMax, not just at its corporate headquarters but also at its 130-plus locations around the country. The company believes that physical fitness is an important aspect of overall wellness for associates and their families, and the fitness center and gym are just one part of that. They also have running trails around their campus, host several fitness events throughout the year for employees, coordinate training teams for events such as the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k, and have engaged company- wide associate wellness committees, and have participated in more than 150

charity walks across the country in the last year. “The list is endless of activities you can do here,” is how Brian Maslyk, who works in site design, described the programs available. “It’s so much fun!”

“For us it’s natural to assume that taking care of associates, that’s part of wellness,” said Kim Ross, AVP of Human Resources for CarMax. “We want to take care of them. We want them to be well. And that equals engaged associates, so for us it’s natural.”

CarMax was honored as the 2013–14 Active RVA ‘Outstanding Company of the Year’ at the annual Active RVA awards luncheon for their dedication to employee health and wellness. The Active RVA Fit Company initiative aims to recognize and highlight businesses around the region that are creating a culture of physical activity and wellness and to serve as a resource to share new ideas and best practices.

An important piece of any corporate wellness plan is buy-in and support from senior leadership, and that is one reason that CarMax’s efforts have been so successful. “What our CEO always likes to say is, ‘We take care of our associates, and they take care of our customers, and everything else takes care of itself,’” said Ross. “Senior management is definitely engaged in our wellness initiatives and our longer-term wellness strategy,” added Health and Wellness Manager Casey Sculthorpe.

CarMax associates see benefits beyond just improved physical wellness, and those attributes are felt in all aspects of the company. “For us, wellness fits into a holistic picture,” Ross said. “Mentally it’s refreshing; you feel engaged, energetic,

excited, more apt to be in a mindframe where things are positive.”

By incorporating fitness into the daily culture, associates also say they feel more refreshed and productive. “A lot of being fit is exercising your brain, too,” said Maslyk. “When your brain gets tired it needs a way to refresh…so taking a break and getting some exercise just totally refreshes your brain and keeps you moving.”

While CarMax takes a multifaceted approach to employee fitness, companies of all sizes can certainly implement wellness in ways that work best for them, and enjoy the benefits that come along with it. “It doesn’t take a lot to get started,” said Ross. And once you do get started, Ross added, “you have better productivity and happier employees,” among other things.

For CarMax, it always comes back to their associates and creating ways for them to succeed. “We just want folks to be active, be healthy, and work in a healthy environment,” said Sculthorpe, the Health and Wellness Manager. “I’m grateful that CarMax gives us this opportunity,” added Maslyk. “It’s a wonderful place to work.”

Page 11: Table of Contents - Sports Backers | Powering an Active RVA

How did you get involved with the Sports Backers? I developed a relationship with Sports Backers as a result of a community service requirement at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School. After volunteering for events such as the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k and the Anthem Richmond Marathon, I continued to work with Mary Marshall Graeber at events even after graduation. The experience was so enjoyable that here I am still with Sports Backers some twelve years later.

In what capacity were you volunteering? I assisted with virtually all aspects of the events, from venue setup and packet pick-up to course marshaling and post-race food. My exposure to the entire scope of the races, from start to finish, sparked my interest and inspired me to then register as a participant.

Were you physically active at all at that point? Growing up, I did not do any sports and in fact was not active at all. By participating in Sports Backers events I have lost over 40 pounds and am now much more conscientious about my health.

My first race was an MS bike ride and with Sports Backers it was the 2008 Maymont XC festival. I enrolled in the YMCA 10k training team in 2009 and enjoyed it so much that I decided to step it up and join the Half Marathon Training Team the following year.

What have been some of your most rewarding fitness accomplishments? Completing the 2010 (then McDonald’s) Half Marathon was certainly a milestone. In addition, I have run in the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k since 2008; beating my personal record each year and making it into the seeded waves these past three years with a time 30 minutes quicker than my first run has also been rewarding. I have also taken up mountain biking, have since completed a duathlon, and have a new-found love for rowing with the Crew Team at VCU.

You’ve been a poster child volunteer and participant of ours, getting others involved along the way. Tell us about how you’ve managed to stay involved throughout college at VCU and how you’ve recruited others. My involvement with Sports Backers has led to many service and nonprofit opportunities. As an alumnus of Maggie Walker I organized spirit groups for the marathon, as the race course travels directly in front of the school. At VCU I was able to share my affinity for volunteering and get others equally passionate as the Philanthropy Chair of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Rounding up a group of guys and having them want to volunteer time for the greater community year after year is truly gratifying. This has even opened doors for further participation with area nonprofits such as The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Children’s Museum of Richmond.

What is your next fitness goal? Richmond has so many great resources for those with an active lifestyle with its trails, parks, races, and festivals. Staying healthy and happy isn’t a problem at all. Looking forward, I would like to PR on my half marathon time and then tackle the full 26.2 miles within the year. And if I can get another buddy or two to join me along the way, that wouldn’t be too bad either.
