President’s MessageDuring the last year, Calhoun CommunityCollege continued to thrive. And, the onething that remained constant throughout allof our accomplishments, achievements, honors and awards was our people. Thestudents, faculty, staff and communities whomake up the Calhoun family are trulyamazing.

Our students continue to excel at all levels, our faculty and staff are among the mostcommitted and dedicated anywhere, and thecommunities we are so very fortunate to be apart of are among the most innovative, productive and diverse in the nation.

Due to the efforts and support of many, wehave been able to accomplish much and onceagain be acknowledged as one of thiscountry’s premier community colleges.Evidence of this was our recognition last yearby the national publication, CommunityCollege Week, as one of the country’s FastestGrowing Community Colleges. Additionally, the College continues to be recognized as oneof the region’s most successful economic andworkforce development engines as wesupport the growth of existing businessesand remain actively involved in attractingnew industry to our area.

We greatly value our partnerships with suchentities as AIDT, in the on-going developmentof the Alabama Robotics Technology Park, and with our sister institution, EnterpriseState Community College, as we become thenorth Alabama site for the Alabama AviationCenter, and with Athens State University indevelopment of the new Downtown Fine ArtsCenter.

Throughout the year, many hours ofmanpower were dedicated to support our re-accreditation by the Southern Association ofColleges and Schools (SACS). In October, we

hosted a successful SACS Visiting Teamreview. While work continues in ourinstitutional effectiveness efforts, we wereextremely pleased by the Team’s overallreport and were most fortunate to receiveglowing comments and no recommendationson our Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) topic.

While much of 2011 was indeed a bright starfor the College, we did see our share ofchallenges. In early spring, members of theCalhoun family, as did many across the stateof Alabama, suffered through the devastationof the April 27th storms. How proud I was ofour students, faculty and staff as we cametogether during this time to not only helpone another but to also extend a helpinghand to many of our neighbors. Even thoughwe were forced to remain closed for almosttwo weeks during one of the busiest times ofthe year, we came together, re-grouped, andwere able to complete finals and conduct our2011 graduation ceremonies as originallyscheduled.

How very fortunate I feel to be part of such acreative, innovative, and dedicated team aswe have here at Calhoun Community College. Our number one priority remains that ofproviding access and ensuring the success ofall of our students, and to that we remaincommitted. My sincere gratitude to all whohave and continue to support us in our effortsto serve the communities and the region weare so much a part of.

Construction for the Center is on schedule, with plans for classes to begin in August2012. A grand opening event for the buildingis planned for early fall.

The new Alabama Center of Excellence inClean Energy Technology (ACECET), located onthe College’s Decatur campus, will soonbecome home to Calhoun’s RenewableEnergy associate’s degree program.

Funded through a $3.47M, U.S. Departmentof Labor grant, the goal of the ACECET is tomeet regional needs for energy certifiedpractitioners in the areas of energyassessment and energy efficient installation.Calhoun’s award was one of only 55 madefrom over 1400 proposals submittednationwide and the only award made in thestate Alabama.

“The ACECET project is the first of its kind inthe state of Alabama leading to an industry-recognized certification and will serve as anational model for community and technicalcolleges and workforce training providers,”said Dr. Debi Hendershot, Calhoun’s Dean forPlanning, Research and Grants.

The AAC also has sites inAndalusia, Albertville, Mobile and Ozark.

The decision to add Calhoun’s Decatur campusas a site for the program was based on inputfrom local community leaders in theaerospace/aviation industry, representatives ofarea chambers of commerce, and the Governor’sOffice of Workforce Development to meet theneed for aviation training in north Alabama.

“This training will augment ongoing economicdevelopment opportunities in aviation andrelated fields in our region,” commented MaryScott Hunter, Alabama State Board member(District VIII).  “As the daughter and wife of twopilots and as a former Air Force officer, I amexcited and proud to support this endeavor.”

EMS and nursing Students ConductMock Emergency Drill

For the second year, students from theCollege’s Emergency Medical Services andNursing programs conducted a mockemergency disaster drill to gain real world,hands-on experience. The mock disastersimulated a scenario of a large crowd with animplanted explosive device (similar to thebombing incident which occurred during the1996 Olympics in Atlanta). In addition toCalhoun EMS and Nursing faculty, area fireand EMS agencies participated with thestudents in this exercise.

College Awarded $200,000 ARC Grant toPurchase Patient Simulator

The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC)awarded a $200,000 grant to the College topurchase a SimMan 3G patient simulator.

The SimMan 3G will allow students  inCalhoun’s Allied Health programs toexperience the latest in hands-on simulationwhile incorporating theory taught in theclassroom setting and strengthening clinicalskills. Patient simulators are some of the bestways for healthcare students to receiveproper training before working with actualpatients.  Scenarios may include the momentof the patient’s injury, patient transport andtreatment simulation.  In addition to thepurchase of SimMan 3G, the grant providesfunding for an additional allied healthlaboratory assistant to be hired to assist the300+ students who will use the simulationequipment each week.

“Calhoun is experiencing unprecedentedenrollment growth in our Allied Healthprograms.  In fact, there has been a 146%enrollment increase in the Nursing programalone between 2000 and 2009,” commentedBret McGill, Health Sciences division dean.“The SimMan 3G will be used by students

And, college data indicates themajority of our graduates remain in the localarea to work,” McGill added.

According to McGill, Calhoun has incorporatedthe use of patient simulators in its healthprograms for several years.  “While we havemade extensive use of these simulators for anumber of years, the SimMan 3G incorporatesthe latest and greatest this field has to offer. Our students and faculty are indeed fortunateto have the opportunity to include thistechnology in our programs,” McGill said.
