OVERVIEW

Tackers is the foundation of the yachting pyramid in that it is designed to introduce and retain more kids (as well as adults) into the sport of sailing.

All stakeholders will benefit in the long term by introducing more people to sailing due to the cost efficiencies, central co-ordination and reduced reliance on volunteers.

Retention rates will improve because of the safe & fun experience, leading to more club members, boats, berths and industry viability.

Tackers will also change the perception of our sport by involving a broader base and enhance clubs relationships with government by delivering benefits to the community.

Approach

The program will be launched in Victoria as a pilot for implementation to training centres nationally (60-80 Clubs).

Curriculum

The Yachting Australia ‘Get Into Small Boat Sailing’ curriculum and log book, has been adapted to deliver the Tackers program which accommodates school timetables and outdoor activities.

Structure

The schools program will be managed centrally, but implemented on a state by state basis. The program coordinator develops and oversees the program, and will provide support to the state and regional offices that deliver the course.

Facilities

The schools program will utilise existing club facilities; storage, change rooms, catering, safety boats, etc. Tackers can provide boats and equipment for metropolitan students and a mobile service for the benefit of regional students.

MANAGEMENT

PROGRAMThe Tackers program is designed to provide flexibility for clubs to arrange training

days and sessions to suit the clubs individual training framework and resources, fit in with local primary school curriculum and provide OOSH sailing with Holiday programs and supervised sailing at every opportunity.

Tackers qualified YA Instructors will be managed centrally, traveling to the participating clubs. Instructors will generally be youth sailors attending tertiary education with the goal to provide them some casual employment and maintain their visibility and interest in the sport.

Tackers is adapted from GISBIS and exits prior to ‘racing skills’ for the clubs to direct to their nominated class;

Tackers 1 ½ Day – Full Day sessions. (intro to sailing)Tackers 2 Five + ½ / Full Day sessions. (basic skills)Tackers 3 Five + ½ / Full Day sessions. (better sailing)

Tackers can provide a variety of supporting theory, activities and games which focus on standard subjects of school curriculum;
