Presentation Notes
Good morning everyone and thank you for taking the time today to come to this event, although breakfast always helps to boost numbers!!! my name is Julie Deeley and I’m the Ops Manager for FWY and as the slide says this is ………. We have been asked to come along today to talk you you about Skills or to be more exact the skills shortage we have in the Construction Sector. I assure you its not going to be death by power point, my bit will probably be the boring bit talking about the Skills Shortage but then Angie and Richard will entertain you with actual examples of Wates have done to try to rectify the problem, that bit will be much more interesting I think! This presentation is not about providing all the answers to problems but opening minds, energising the thought process and considering new ways of thinking so you can develop your own solutions. • Formed in May 2013 as a direct result of Public and Private sector demand for more apprenticeship delivery through construction projects.

• YORfuture – is a demand led, Shared Apprenticeship Service. It is one of a number of CITB approved schemes across the country.

• Through effective planning with a series of individual project assignments we can provide the required range of task related skills to complete an apprenticeship.

Presentation Notes
As I said a minute ago, I am the Operations Manager of Futureworks (Yorkshire), a Community Interest Company (CIC), formed in May 2013 to deliver the YORfuture SAS across the Yorkshire & Humber. The YORfuture Shared Apprenticeship Scheme is an innovative collaboration between CITB and regional partners, established in response to industry demand, to provide construction contractors with a solution to meeting their training obligations and to maximise opportunities for apprentices. Futureworks (Yorkshire), was formed specially to manage YORfuture on behalf of CITB, YORhub frameworks so that’s YORbuild, YORcivils and YORconsult and contractors and consultants in the region Futureworks is demand led and only employs apprentices in order for them to complete a full apprenticeship, be that level 2 or level 3. The apprentices all attend local providers to complete their study and are placed with host contractors to complete their experiential learning. We enable organisations to benefit from apprentices in the built environment, on all phases from design to maintenance and for the required duration. Particularly focused on supporting companies who have not had apprentices before or simply don’t want the hassle of recruiting or where the project doesn’t support the full duration of apprentices or On top of this we have continued to support, clients small and large, with all aspects of social value advice. At Futureworks (Yorkshire) we are passionate about providing sustainable futures for diverse ranges of talented young people. Next Slide

Headline Grabbing• The number of skill-shortage vacancies has gone up

by 43%.• Britain hit by worst skills shortage for 30 years.• Skills shortages are a direct result of the industry

failing to invest in the future.• Major companies and unions have warned that

talent gaps across the sector - which many claim have been caused by a continuing decline in apprenticeships - are threatening the economy, just as it is starting to recover from the recession.

• More support needed for employers in attracting and retaining a more diverse talent pool to run the businesses of the future.

Presentation Notes
We’ve all seen the headlines over and over again warning of the Armageddon that is facing us. Firms continue to be surveyed and they keep saying they believe the skills shortage is the biggest challenge currently facing their business. Sorry about this but I’m going to read some numbers now, I tried to memorize them but it didn’t work! The recent CITB report states that over 230,000 new workers are needed in the next 5 years, in Yorkshire and the Humber that equates to £3,230 on an annual basis and is a growth rate of 2.4%; which is a little higher than the 2.1% seen in the last growth period for construction between 1995 and 2007 With housing output forecast to grow, and ambitious Government targets across the UK to increase the volume of available homes by 2020, CITB is working closely with industry to understand the potential impact that this may have on skills and employment. Some employers will say “its not as if we haven’t been training though” which is true but we haven’t been doing enough If we compare ourselves to other professions, the majority are facing a jobs shortage – where the number of people trained far outstrips the number of jobs available. In the Media and Creative industry, 83,000 people go into training each year to fill 65,000 jobs, a jobs gap of 18,000 jobs and in the Hair and Beauty sector, the UK trains 94,000 to fill 18,000 jobs. That means every year we have 76,000 qualified beauticians and hair dressers without a job in their industry. Why are young people attracted to these sectors where there is little possibility of a long term job? Next Slide

Securing Talent• What are YOUR options:

– Do nothing / continue as you do now

– Widen your focus– Grow your own

• YOUR Business – YOURDecision “ If we want young people who are

ready for the workplace, we need to be ready to help build their employability

skills ”

Presenter
Presentation Notes
So what are your options? How can you secure the talent you need. Can you find the talented young people? Will they be attracted into your sector / our sector. We do have poor careers advice in many schools these days which is why representatives of the three major political parties are calling for huge improvements. However we need to act now Do nothing or not plan properly, then you finish up not finding anyone suitable. This really isn’t an option When it comes to securing talent, thinking outside the box is needed. Why can we do this when it comes to our projects but not our sector image and recruitment strategies? Be brave, look to grow your own. It’s the smartest business decision, you will ever make. Talk to those who have been doing this for some time both in our sector and outside of it. Next Slide

Presentation Notes
Today’s young people are the future and the future of the industry. Is it the case that the potential workforce is out there and we need to think differently about the way we attract, train, and develop people? For the first time apprentices are beating graduates in the Jobs Race - Is Anyone Surprised By This? Apprentices are a very real answer to your long term staffing needs. The benefits are staring you in the face – literally. Ranging in age from 10 to 30, they comprise about 17 million people or approx. 26% of the UK population. As they go through their education, look at careers, seek to enter the workforce, will they consider work in our industry? Do young people know what we have to offer? What should be the industry’s pitch? What can you offer? NEXT SLIDE
