The Peaceful Dragon For the Contemporary Mind, Body and Spirit

Message from Master Eric Sbarge
Did you notice it’s summer time out there? Hard not to with this heat, I know.
But the more important question is, have you adjusted your daily habits and lifestyle
accordingly?
In our Western culture we don’t always pay attention to the seasons (maybe farmers
still do, but that’s fewer than 2% of Americans). But in the Eastern arts taught at The
Peaceful Dragon we are reminded to pay full attention to seasonal changes.
With the advent of summer have you modified your diet to include mostly cooling foods? Have you
increased your exercise to sweat more and purge the body of toxins – yet paid attention to the time of
day so you’re not depleting your energy in the hot mid-day hours?
Are you rising earlier, shaking off any remnants of our winter “hibernation” tendencies?
Are you strengthening your heart, or unwittingly weakening your heart, the organ that ties in with the
fire element which in the Chinese 5-element system dominates in summer?
Of course I could go on and on, but the point is to follow the Tao – follow what is healthiest and most
natural for us. If you’re not sure what to eat, see what’s fresh at the farmer’s market. If you’re not sure
when to wake up, look outside and see if the sun’s up.
You don’t need special training, just the interest to watch what other creatures in nature are doing,
and follow right along.
“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.”
― Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

Peaceful Dragon School News (All Real!)
Plan and Start Saving NOW for The Peaceful Dragon’s 2019
China and Japan Tour!
The Peaceful Dragon is sponsoring an Asia tour for our students, family members and friends in October of 2019 – this will be our fourth tour, and each previous one has been fantastic. This two-week tour promises to be a fantastic trip that will include practice in meditation and martial arts with locals, sightseeing, cultural excursions and events, and much more. Our tentative itinerary includes Japan for the first time – Tokyo and Kyoto (with its ancient Zen temples) – and the beautiful Chinese cities of Suzhou (called China’s Venice with the picturesque canals) and Hangzhou (the lake city), the spiritual Yellow Mountains, and the cosmopolitan heart of China, Shanghai. The estimated cost for this all-inclusive custom tour with 4 and 5 star accommodations, all travel and excellent meals, admissions to cultural events, and the service of highly-professional English-speaking guides is between $3500 - $4000. We hope you can go – it’s a great investment for a lifetime of memories!
Send Us Your Event Photos or Short Video Clips If you get some nice shots of Peaceful Dragon events please send them to [email protected] for display in our newsletter, social media pages and our new upcoming lobby-area TV!

Did You Know…
Traditional kung fu was actually banned in China after the Communist takeover, but
has since been not only permitted but encouraged as a means of highlighting China’s great history of cultural accomplishments?
In some public school settings meditation is now being utilized instead of punishment to help children with conflict resolution, and the results have been very positive in most cases?

A Message from Mr. George
Summer break is about half way through and I hope everyone is enjoying the hot weather. As some of
our students are taking vacations and/or summer camps, remember to keep up your training. During
the class time we have a structured warm up, curriculum, mat chat and a game at the end. However,
the home practice might not be as exciting as a group class. A daily routine of stretching, push-ups,
student creed, and practice kung fu form for a total of 10 minutes is perfect for the White Sash level
students. Some of the Brown Sashes preparing for Jr. Black Sash might train for an hour every day to
keep up with the skill level.
I played years of lacrosse in high school and I still remember the requirement to be on the varsity
team. The coach wanted to see how well the player performed during the trial weeks, how much we
push ourselves, and how much we practiced beyond the scheduled practice time. We had to run 3
miles on our own, hit the weight room 3 times a week, and show up to practice 2 hours everyday
including Saturdays. Coach did not monitor our 3 miles of run nor did he check if we hit the weight
room. I remember some of my teammate will run 2 miles or skip the run all together. Some teammate
will show up to the weight room and chat with others for an hour. When it comes to the trial weeks,
our true attitudes were on full display for everyone to see. Coach had simple drills like wind sprints
and zig-zag running, to complex drills like 2 vs 1, fast breaks and man down drills. Those teammates
who did their running, weight room training and daily practice, performed very well. Those teammates
who were slacking or avoiding their home practice, did not qualify for the trial week. Coach said
athletes who have heart can be champions. In kung fu, those who have self-discipline can become
Black Sashes.

As teachers, it is our responsibility to inspire the students, to motivate them, and to teach them to
succeed. The kung fu forms, sparring, stances and techniques are just like the high school lacrosse
drills. My coach taught me I must have “heart” to win games, and he helped me develop my “heart”
by doing difficult physical training. That dedication, self-discipline, perseverance, and push-your-limit
are just like kung fu training. Keep up the hard work!
Powerful Words
This month’s Powerful Word is Mental Strength. Mental Strength means regulating emotions,
managing thoughts, and taking positive actions even when challenged. Dr. Robyn’s letter to the
parents discusses how to guide your children to be resilient to stress and be mentally strong.

Students Ask Master Sbarge
Question: What is your favorite kung fu movie? Answer: I’m afraid I don’t rent or stream movies or tv any longer so I don’t see anything new, but Kung Fu Hustle is still my favorite.
