Officer Ellis attempted to helpput out the fire before firefightersarrived on the scene.

Gurdon Fire Chief Nolan saidseven Gurdon firefighters respond-ed, three from Whelen Springs and

two from Beirne.Gurdon firefighter John

Woods said at least one fromCurtis also helped gain control ofthe blaze.

Although half of the structurestill stands, Chief Nolan said thedamage was extensive.

Officer Ellis said Gurdon fire-fighters discovered Ms. White inthe rear of the building about 4:30a.m.

The police report said shewas suspected of being under theinfluence of illegal drugs and alsowas suffering from smoke inhala-tion.

Christian love

means acquiring

a love and respect

for all human soulsBy JOHN NELSONTailgate News Editor

I sometimes get disgustedwith this whole mess of preachingto people who seem to ignore anyChristian ovation I make in printor otherwise.

Then I think about what

Jesus Christ went through so that

my soul does not have to end up

in hell, where my sins would have

put it if not for the love of Jehovah

God and the pureblood sacrifice

of Jesus Christ, His only Begotten

Son.

And then I indeed start tofeel ashamed of getting disgustedand remember the passage in theBible about how there is rejoicingin heaven if even one soul choos-es to ask forgiveness instead ofthe broad gate to selfishness andan eternity in the Lake of Fire.

For you see, on earth, and inour business dealings, we aretaught that the larger the number, the bigger the reward and themore it counts toward success. So there was a point where I fellvictim to greed in regard to salva-tion recruitment.

God gave me an assign-ment and I wanted a biggerone. I wanted a chance to leadmillions of souls to the LordJesus Christ, not just a handfulat best. Such an advancementis God’s decision alone, notours. I realize that now morethan ever.

I suppose I am beginning torespect the Lord’s decisions aboutmy future more than my own atleast in part by what my countryhas gone through in the past fewweeks and months. I look at myold assumptions and shake myhead in disbelief because of the

recent negative changes. Forexample, I always figured that thelaw enforcement in our countrywould be respected by the majori-ty of people and that our right tobe different from each otherwould also be respected.

Apparently they want toerase history. There is a philo-sophical saying that comes tomind. Those who refuse tolearn from history are damnedto repeat it. With the riots andthe lootings and fires set byfolks accompanying our peace-ful protesters against instancesof police brutality and racism, itjust makes me want to cry overthe lack of respect for thosewho have not done anythingwrong yet are being burned outor even killed.

Yet the teachings of JesusChrist tell me I am to love allsouls, even those that would plotto destroy me or even them-selves. When we look around us,that is a tall order. And yet, as Ilook up to the sky to where I pic-ture my Creator looking downupon me, I realize my part in thisis to spread the Gospel ratherthan become a social reformer.Still yet, I find myself wanting todefend me and mine against theapparent spreading of violence inmy country.

The United States has beena Christian nation for 200 years.

The Pilgrims came here for thefreedom to practice Christian reli-gion. People in modern times, likeBilly Sunday, Billy Graham andeven Joyce Meyers, who I believeis still evangelizing Christianity, have had the freedom to preachand teach Christian Biblical princi-pals. I pray Christians have thefreedom to preach the Gospelhere in the future, but again, thatis up to God not man.

The Bible tells us to do allwe know in regard to Christianactions and then to stand andwait upon the Lord to finish ourtasks.

My discouragement for notbeing better at communicating thelove of Christ comes at least inpart from the fact that now morethan ever we are being muzzledon our own United States turf inregard to preaching JehovahGod’s truths as depicted in theOld and New Testaments.Christianity is a religion of love. Our Bibles tell us Jehovah God,God All Mighty, Father God orwhatever your favorite form ofreferring to our Creator is love, not hate. His mercy abounds for-ever and He has our backs.

I had an incident happen atmy house this morning thatreminded me of that. My printerquit. Then a couple of hours later, and an unfruitful shopping triplater, it came back on miraculous-ly after I prayed in the Name ofJesus Christ for it to do so. I gotsome gratitude in my attitude andrealized what I had heard thismorning at church was right.

We have to have faith in

God’s strength, not our own.

These are troubled times with no

good answers. Our human sides

tell us persecution and maybe

even socialism is going to replace

our freedoms in the United States.

But we have to remind ourselves

that nothing can replace the love,

the power and the glory of Jesus

Christ and if we are going to be

effective Christian soldiers we are

going to have to fall in love with

human souls - all human souls,

not just the ones that seem like

they are good candidates for

heaven.

Because the only one whoknows what a man or a womanwill decide about salvation beforethey die is that particular man orwoman, when the time comes. The Spirit of Jesus Christ knowseverything. I refer to the cosmicknowledge of the Father, the Sonand the Holy Ghost.Communication with this knowl-edge of what is a right or wrong

can start with the individual study-ing the words in our ChristianBible. It contains our connectionto eternal truths and should berespected and honored among allChristian men and women.

Let’s look at others who fell inlove with human souls. The disci-ple Peter sure did. There were3,000 saved in one service heconducted (1) and that was justthe beginning of his ministry afterthe death of the carnal body ofJesus Christ.

Let’s look at Paul. When hewas Saul, he was a murderer andcontract killer assigned to extin-guish Christians by the Romangovernment. Yet this same soulbecame a recruited Christianpreacher by an experience withthe Spirit of Jesus Christ involvingsuch a bright light it blinded him.At first, other Christians did not

want to believe his conversion. But alas, the miracle indeed hap-pened. To much is given, much isexpected. Christ brought an endto Saul’s sinful lifestyle andplaced him on a salvation path - aChristian soldier path. God gaveSaul a new name of Paul andmade him one of the most notedChristian preachers in all of histo-ry. He wrote that he was the chiefof sinners (2). Yet he fell in lovewith other souls so much that hewrote over half of the NewTestament, so many scholars tellme, and his preaching was knownall over the Roman empire andbeyond.

Love drove these two guys.Love needs to drive us if we aregoing to be effective preachers ofthe Gospel, be it in print like Godhas allowed me to do since 2012,or in person, like so many preach-ers I know that do this thingSunday after Sunday - CoronaVirus restrictions and all.

Loving people and their soulsis the key. Jesus Christ and Histeachings tell us we are to lovethe unlovable and go to bat fortheir souls. The Word says beforeHe comes back and puts His footon Mt. Olive to reclaim His earthlyKingdom of God, all must hearthe Gospel (3) and have theirchance to be saved. That meansfolks on and off the Internet mustlose their ignorance and you and Imust help them lose it - that is ifyou, like me, are called to servein this Great Commission.

So whether the country ischanging so fast that we find ithard to keep up, one thing neverchanges and that is the love ofGod. As the song says, Jesusloves the little children, all the littlechildren of the world. Red andyellow, black or white, they areprecious in His site, Jesus lovesthe little children of the world. Tallorder? You bet. But soldiers, nobody said this was going to beeasy. At least they never said it tome. Love those souls and keepon keeping on until your Lordcalls you home.

SCRIPTURES1) PETER LEADS 3,000 TO

JESUS CHRIST - Acts 2:36-47King James Version (KJV)

36 Therefore let all the houseof Israel know assuredly, that Godhath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, bothLord and Christ. 37 Now whenthey heard this, they were prickedin their heart, and said unto Peterand to the rest of the apostles,Men and brethren, what shall wedo? 38 Then Peter said untothem, Repent, and be baptizedevery one of you in the name ofJesus Christ for the remission ofsins, and ye shall receive the giftof the Holy Ghost.

39 For the promise is untoyou, and to your children, and toall that are afar off, even as manyas the Lord our God shall call. 40And with many other words did hetestify and exhort, saying, Saveyourselves from this untowardgeneration. 41 Then they thatgladly received his word werebaptized: and the same day therewere added unto them aboutthree thousand souls. 42 And theycontinued stedfastly in the apos-tles’ doctrine and fellowship, andin breaking of bread, and inprayers.

43 And fear came upon everysoul: and many wonders andsigns were done by the apostles.44 And all that believed weretogether, and had all things com-mon;

45 And sold their posses-sions and goods, and parted themto all men, as every man hadneed. 46 And they, continuingdaily with one accord in the tem-ple, and breaking bread fromhouse to house, did eat their meatwith gladness and singleness ofheart,

47 Praising God, and havingfavour with all the people. And theLord added to the church dailysuch as should be saved.

2) PAUL CALLED HIMSELFCHIEF OF SINNERS - 1 Timothy1-2 King James Version (KJV) 1Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christby the commandment of God ourSaviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope; 2 UntoTimothy, my own son in the faith:Grace, mercy, and peace, fromGod our Father and Jesus Christour Lord. 3 As I besought thee toabide still at Ephesus, when Iwent into Macedonia, that thoumightest charge some that theyteach no other doctrine, 4 Neithergive heed to fables and endlessgenealogies, which minister ques-tions, rather than godly edifyingwhich is in faith: so do.

5 Now the end of the com-mandment is charity out of a pureheart, and of a good conscience,and of faith unfeigned: 6 Fromwhich some having swerved haveturned aside unto vain jangling;

7 Desiring to be teachers of

the law; understanding neitherwhat they say, nor whereof theyaffirm. 8 But we know that the lawis good, if a man use it lawfully; 9Knowing this, that the law is notmade for a righteous man, but forthe lawless and disobedient, forthe ungodly and for sinners, forunholy and profane, for murderersof fathers and murderers of moth-ers, for manslayers,

10 For whoremongers, forthem that defile themselves withmankind, for menstealers, forliars, for perjured persons, and ifthere be any other thing that iscontrary to sound doctrine; 11According to the glorious gospelof the blessed God, which wascommitted to my trust.

12 And I thank Christ Jesusour Lord, who hath enabled me,for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; 13Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious:but I obtained mercy, because Idid it ignorantly in unbelief.

14 And the grace of ourLord was exceeding abundantwith faith and love which is inChrist Jesus. 15 This is a faith-ful saying, and worthy of allacceptation, that Christ Jesuscame into the world to savesinners; of whom I am chief.

16 Howbeit for this cause Iobtained mercy, that in me firstJesus Christ might shew forth alllongsuffering, for a pattern tothem which should hereafter

Remembering

the farm; the

beauty of home...It was more than half a

century ago now when

I was a little boy growing

up alone on the farm.

I caught rabbits in

wooden traps and mixed

wild ones and tame,

making them all my own.

I had nine barn cats

meeting me at the school bus,

knowing good and well

they would get fed.

From grade 2 through

graduation day, not much

changed. A boy, his

grandparents, his girlfriend

and a lot of smiles

and good times.

Band, church, 4-H,

we had it all in

Hagerstown, Indiana.

No riots there, no

rediculous fires,

only well meaning

folks and kindness toward

any child...

Bailing hay, getting hot

and sweaty, taking

a good ole shower and

rinsing long hair in

my sink on that farm.

Getting up early,

studying hard. Graduating

high school, playing

clarinet, trumpet, just

doing the John and Joni

thing in the home town.

Where did all that go?

Now I live in a world

that tries to deny history

so they are doomed

to repeat it. Somehow

it feels like my grand kids

are gonna get cheated.

Yes, as Elton John once

sang, I should have stayed

Gurdon Superintendent NikkiThomas started her job onWednesday, July 1 and said shewas looking forward to the chal-lenges of opening face to faceschool this fall, as well as gettingwith School Board members andher staff to set goals that centeraround giving Gurdon studentsacademic and employmentadvantages after graduation.

Superintendent Thomas saidher first School Board meetingwould be at 6 p.m. on Tuesday,July 7 “and revolve around goalsetting for the district.”

She said regular SchoolBoard meetings will continue tobe at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesdayof the month in the administrationalumni room - starting on July 21.

FALL RULESAlthough Thomas said school

this fall at Gurdon will probablyinclude some blended options, forthe most part classes will meetface to face. Still, someAlternative Methods of Instruction(AMI) will be offered in certainhigh health risk cases.

However, the face to faceCorona Virus health restrictionsmay not be as severe as previ-ously thought. Busing, for exam-ple, will be done with one trip in to

school and one trip home, with allstudents 10 years old and olderrequired to wear masks to reducevirus spreading risks and youngerstudents being told they maywear masks on a voluntary basis.

“The state is allowing us tohave some flexibility on social dis-tancing and mask rules,” shesaid.

“As to AMI, if a family choos-es that we plan to offer a flashdrive option so that high gradeInternet is not required, but wewill have a daily lesson checkingtime and students in AMI willneed an approved helper athome.”

Thomas said daily atten-dance, whether in face to face

school or AMI, will be required, aswell as doing the daily lessonsand keeping up with homework.

“We believe most studentsget a better experience face toface, but also understand that ablended option will probably benecessary - with situational evalu-ation done on a case by casebasis,” she said.

“On the masks, we do hopemost of the younger ones keepthem on but requiring them to doso may be too much to expect.Overall, we want to conductschool as close to normal as pos-sible, while adhering to healthcautions over the virus, such associal distancing and the wearingof masks whenever possible.”

Summer heat leads to swim

popularity in Gurdon areaBy SHERRY KELLEYGurdon Mayor

Summer is here. Muggy and hot days for the next couple ofmonths are upon us. Lots of swimming pools are going up inGurdon.

With the Corona Virus many people are staying home andyou can’t’ hardly find a pool at the Walmart or Atwoods.

Luckily, I have an old one that still works well. It is a greatway to go through the summer.

I like projects. It’s enjoyable to think them up and an adven-ture to find great partners who will fund them.

But my favorite part of projects is enjoying them when theyare done. We’ve made real progress with the downtown facadeand Gurdon City Hall entryway this week

The sign is up on the Ross Foundation funded seventy-five-foot-wide by fifteen-foot-tall newly purple facade of the old Bill’sDollar Store. Volunteer Mary Lewis (my mom) painted a Golden“G” sign which now hangs proudly over Main Street. We will addsome lights, soon.

Three framed issues of The Gurdon Times newspaper nowhang in the newly gold painted Gurdon City Hall vestibuledirectly above the Cabe Foundation funded Chandler and Priceprinting press c. 1910. The historical sign will be added nextweek.

Weather permitting, we will replace several hundred feet ofsewer main this week.

Here is hoping you enjoyed your Fourth of July holiday andcelebrated responsibly.

We are seeing a number of virus cases result in a signifi-cantly lower number of fatalities here lately. Let’s keep up thegood work for the benefit of us all.

Face to face church servicesare alive and well at FirstAssembly of God in Gurdon everySunday morning at 11 a.m.

Pastor Andrew Goodwin, 33,has been the preacher there forseven years and admits he was abit apprehensive about convertingto drive-in church for 12 weeks, starting in March, due to CoronaVirus health warnings “but ourattendance was surprisingly goodduring that time.”

Traditional church servicesstarted Sunday, June 14 with facemasks available to those wantingto wear them and social distanc-ing advice to reduce the spread ofthe highly publicized bat flu fromspreading has been adhered toby church goers.

“We used the drive-in churchtime to remodel our sanctuary,”Brother Andrew said Wednesday.“Our attendance to the drive-inservices actually pushed up tonearly 50 cars in our lot and prob-ably 100 people attending wor-ship. The face to face serviceattendance has been good, but isalways a little smaller than usualthis time of year due to our mem-bers going on vacations beforeschool starts up again in the fall.”

He said face to face atten-dance these past few weeks isabout 60 percent of what is nor-mal during the non-vacation timeof year. As to the drive-in church,it started on March 22.

There was also at least oneChristian movie offered from theparking lot, with a radio stationaudio reception in place. This edi-tor and his wife did attend andfound it similar to the old fash-ioned drive-in movies of a fewdecades back.

Brother Andrew, a Texasnative from a family of ministers, came to Gurdon First Assembly ofGod in October of 2013. He hasbeen married to Sarah Goodwinfor 10 years. Both are alsoinvolved in music ministry, withthe pastor on drums and his wifesinging specials.

The couple has three chil-dren; Audreanna, 8, Anthony, 6and Esther, 22 months.

As to the church remodeling, during the early days of theCorona Virus epidemic, Brother

Andrew said the sanctuaryreceived new lighting, new carpetand some “new to us pews.”

“We got a bargain on those

Gurdon First Assembly of God Brother Andrew

hopes all services will be in person by fall

OPEN SUNDAY MORNINGS FOR FACE TO FACE CHURCH -

Gurdon First Assembly of God Pastor Andrew Goodwin did 12 weeks

of drive-in church in cooperation with Corona Virus health restric-

tions, but used the time to remodel the santuary. The Gurdon church

now has 11 a.m. Sunday face to face services, with social distancing

encouraged and masks available. (John Nelson photo)

Page 8: tailgate NEWS July 6, 2020 - month€¦ · 06/07/2010  · Jaedyn A’maiya Shields, Shelly Myka Marie Smith, Titana Taniyah Staten, Thomas Dwayne Stockdale; William Jackson Stroud,

pews, which only cost us $1,000,but I think everyone would agreethey sure look good and are verycomfortable,” he said. “It wasgood to get something positiveout of this unusual time in histo-ry.”

So far the Assembly is justhaving the 11 a.m. worship serv-ice on Sunday mornings, “but weare planning to go back to ourSunday School at 10 a.m. andour Children’s Church as soon asit is feasible,” he said.

“I am a face to face, personto person kind of guy, so thisdrive-in stuff was hard on me andI realize it has been even harderon some of the older members ofmy congregation who enjoy notonly the worship time on Sundaysbut the company of their friends.”

Brother Andrew said gettingthe Children’s Church started upagain has been on his mind, ashe has noted the reports fromGov. Asa Hutchinson confirmingthat only 125 have died nation-wide, who were under the age of25, during the entire Corona Viruspandemic since it became anissue at the first of the year.

“We hate it that anyone haspassed from the virus, but real-ize our children’s Christianexposure does matter,” he said.“For the kids, we have beendoing a Wednesday nightTailgate hang-out in our park-ing lot at 7 p.m. for those from2 to 16 years old,” he noted.

Tailgate hang-out for theyoungsters includes Christiansongs, skits and lessons. Theadult Sunday services also

include the old hymns, specials, the sermon and other encourag-ing activities promoting “the Spiritfilled life and the idea that everybeliever in Jesus Christ shouldseek to grow in his or her person-al relationship with Christ andbecome more Christ-like in theirbehaviors as time goes by.”

“We teach that an individualwho accepts salvation from JesusChrist, by way of asking that theirsins be forgiven and forgiving oth-ers of any wrong doings, is savedby the grace of Jesus Christ andHis sacrifice through faith and notof ourselves,” he said.

Brother Andrew said a goal

of the First Assembly of God is to

promote a positive life change

that comes from All Mighty God

washing them from the inside out

and therefore God being respon-

sible for a transformation to

behavior more and more like

Jesus Christ has instructed a per-

son to live in the Christian Bible.

“We want to be a churchwhere everyone is comfortable,no matter what stage ofChristianity they are at,” he said.“We want them to feel God’spresence and to feel acceptedhere, as we realize nobody is per-fect.”

Brother Andrew said he relieson the Spirit of Jesus Christ to leta person know when a sin hasbeen committed “and then it is upto the individual to not ignoreGod’s revelation of said sin and tomake an effort to overcome it.”

Praying for loved ones is a

regular occurrence at theAssembly, and singing old, inspir-ing Christian hymns helps set aGod praising mood for worship-pers.

Brother Andrew said he hashigh hopes of Sunday School,Children’s Church, Bible study, and other activities that occurredpre-Corona, to resume this fall.

“Our goal is to open up safe-ly, but to also recognize thathuman contact with other believ-ers is so necessary in theChristian walk. I will let peopleknow dates for opening certainaspects of our ministry as soonas I know them and look forwardto things getting better,” he said.

believe on him to life everlasting.17 Now unto the King eter-

nal, immortal, invisible, the onlywise God, be honour and glory forever and ever. Amen.

18 This charge I commit untothee, son Timothy, according tothe prophecies which went beforeon thee, that thou by them might-est war a good warfare; 19Holding faith, and a good con-science; which some having putaway concerning faith have madeshipwreck:

20 Of whom is Hymenaeusand Alexander; whom I havedelivered unto Satan, that theymay learn not to blaspheme.

2 I exhort therefore, that, firstof all, supplications, prayers, inter-cessions, and giving of thanks, bemade for all men; 2 For kings, and for all that are in authority;that we may lead a quiet andpeaceable life in all godliness andhonesty.

3 For this is good andacceptable in the sight of God ourSaviour; 4 Who will have all mento be saved, and to come untothe knowledge of the truth. 5 Forthere is one God, and one media-tor between God and men, theman Christ Jesus;

6 Who gave himself a ran-som for all, to be testified in duetime. 7 Whereunto I am ordaineda preacher, and an apostle, (I

speak the truth in Christ, and lienot;) a teacher of the Gentiles infaith and verity.

8 I will therefore that menpray every where, lifting up holyhands, without wrath and doubt-ing. 9 In like manner also, thatwomen adorn themselves in mod-est apparel, with shamefacednessand sobriety; not with broidedhair, or gold, or pearls, or costlyarray;

10 But (which becomethwomen professing godliness) withgood works. 11 Let the womanlearn in silence with all subjection.

12 But I suffer not a womanto teach, nor to usurp authorityover the man, but to be in silence.

13 For Adam was firstformed, then Eve. 14 And Adamwas not deceived, but the womanbeing deceived was in the trans-gression.

15 Notwithstanding she shallbe saved in childbearing, if theycontinue in faith and charity andholiness with sobriety.

3) ALL WILL HEAR THEGOSPEL BEFORE CHRISTRETURNS - Matthew 24:6-24King James Version (KJV) 6 Andye shall hear of wars and rumoursof wars: see that ye be not trou-bled: for all these things mustcome to pass, but the end is notyet.

7 For nation shall rise against

nation, and kingdom against king-dom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earth-quakes, in divers places. 8 Allthese are the beginning of sor-rows.

9 Then shall they deliver youup to be afflicted, and shall killyou: and ye shall be hated of allnations for my name’s sake. 10And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, andshall hate one another.

11 And many false prophetsshall rise, and shall deceive many.12 And because iniquity shallabound, the love of many shallwax cold. 13 But he that shallendure unto the end, the sameshall be saved.

14 And this gospel of thekingdom shall be preached inall the world for a witness untoall nations; and then shall theend come.

15 When ye therefore shallsee the abomination of desola-tion, spoken of by Daniel theprophet, stand in the holy place,(whoso readeth, let him under-stand:)

16 Then let them which be inJudaea flee into the mountains:

17 Let him which is on thehousetop not come down to takeany thing out of his house: 18Neither let him which is in thefield return back to take his

clothes.19 And woe unto them that

are with child, and to them thatgive suck in those days! 20 Butpray ye that your flight be not inthe winter, neither on the sabbathday: 21 For then shall be great

tribulation, such as was not since

the beginning of the world to this

time, no, nor ever shall be.

22 And except those days

should be shortened, there should

no flesh be saved: but for the

elect’s sake those days shall be

shortened.

23 Then if any man shall sayunto you, Lo, here is Christ, orthere; believe it not.

24 For there shall arisefalse Christs, and falseprophets, and shall shew greatsigns and wonders; insomuchthat, if it were possible, theyshall deceive the very elect.

Thoughts by Max Brown

Jesus is there;

Whether your need

is big or small, short or tall!We don’t have to pick out certain things to go to

Jesus with. He cares about ALL your needs big or small. So when you talk to Jesus you can share all your needsto Him and ask for the answer. He already knows theproblem, Amen?

Israel was God’s people and He told the: Isaiah41:10-11 “do not fear for I am with you “and today wehave to realize if we’re God’s people; “ Christians,” thenHe is letting us know not to fear. He is our refuge, Psalm91:1-2.

This world may be going crazy but we have a Hopeand that Hope is Jesus and the Word that will withstandeverything! Amen, God Bless, Love Ya!
