Guest conductors, including such renowned fgures as Gunther Theuring, Peter Phillips, Yan Liang-kun ( 嚴良堃), Paul Traver, Bob Chil- cott and Frieder Bernius have praised the TCS or its unique sound and expressive power. Beginning with Renaissance vocal music, the TCS has broadened its repertoire to take on contemporary choral works rom around the world. In 2009, the TCS delivered works by Alberto G rau, Oscar Escalada, An tonio Estev ez and Ernani Aguiar. Then in 2010, it perormed works by Arvo Pärt, Veljo Tormis, Einojuhan i Rautavaara , Pekka Kostiainen, Gyorgy Ligeti and Jesper Nordin. Last year, the TCS per- ormed works by Morten Lauridsen and Moses Hogan, along with those by old masters des Prez, Lasso, Palestrina, Morley, Victoria, Tom- kins and Wilbye. Moreover, or the past fve years the TCS has been dedicated to commission ing, pre- miering and publishing new choral works by Chinese composers living around the world to oster a contemporary, East Asian choral tradi- tion. This initiative, known as Music Unlimited (合唱無設限), has generated works by more than a dozen composers: Chung Yao-kuang ( 鍾 耀光), Chen Mei-chun ( 陳玫君), Yim Fuk-wing (嚴福榮), Chen Chiung-yu ( 陳瓊瑜), Lee Tzyy- sheng (李子聲), Jen Chen-hui ( 任真慧), Liang Hsueh-hsien (梁學賢), Ma Ting-yi ( 馬定一), Jan Tien-hao ( 冉天豪), Chan Wai-kwong ( 陳偉光), Chen Shu-si (陳樹熙), Chao Ching-wen (趙菁文), Tseng Shing-kwei (曾興魁) and Jin Xiang ( 金湘). In addition to regular annual premieres, the TCS has perormed commissioned works at in- ternational events such as the 2007 ISCM-ACL World Musi c Days Hong Kong and the 2008 World Symposium on Chor al Music Denmark. Below, TCS President Jenny Fang (方素貞) and Artistic Director Chen Yun-hung (陳雲紅) discuss their thoughts on having dedicated two decades to the choir. Q: How did TCS start? Fang: Twenty years ago, a group o us who had been singing in choirs or a while wanted to sing particular pieces or which we lacked the opportunity. So we discussed getting to- gether to sing repertoire that we like. We did not realize at the time that we would be doing this or the next twenty years … As music stu- dents, our education wasn’t particularly rich in terms o choral music. We thereore thought that perhaps by collaborating with riends we could fnd the missing piece in our musical puzzle. We bega n with a c appella [unaccompanie d] pieces as a counterbalance to the accompani ed repertoire that we were singing all the time as voice majors, such as operas, art songs and oratorios — 20 years ago, a cappella choral music was uncommon in Taiwan. Renaissance music is a great gateway to a cappella choral singing; we also met Chen with her orte in Renaissance music. It turned out to be match made in heaven and we continued collaborat- ing or years. Later on, we started exploring realms beyond the Renaissance. Renaissance pieces were stipulated or the competitions we en- tered during the frst ew years ... Ater going abroad several times, though, scales ell rom our eyes and we started noticing the other teams — who they were, where t hey come rom, what is unique about those places and what kind o music they sang. We then asked ourselves whether we can do something else in addition to Renaissance music. We there- ore developed the Music Unlimited series and, along with that, a sense o mission and responsibility. Q: Chen, what motivated you to take the TCS to international competitions and by what strengths was the TCS r ecognized? Chen: The TCS was ounded with an aspi- ration or artistic excellence. We took part in international competitio ns to let the world see choral excellence rom Taiwan as well as to see the world or ourselves and broaden our scope. Our maiden voyage was to Italy to take part in one o the world’s top six competitions, a veritable challenge. At that time, ew choirs r om Taiwan t ook part in competitions abroad, and there were ewer competitions overall. Yet many out- standing teams would go despite unding di- fculties because room and board are ree or contestants. As the choir gre w, we s et new directi ons, such as incorporating stage theatrics, diver- siying musical styles, and developing the contemporary ocus starting fve years ago. We innovate in accordance with the singers’ prog- ress, global trends and the listeners’ needs. Q: What changes have you seen in the TCS over time? Chen: I must thank both veteran and new choristers or their dedication to the 20-year relay race, who sustain the ensemble’s legacy and renew its vigor. What’s more, the remark- able choristers that have been with us since the beginning have especially been inspira- tions. Plus, we have a vibrant, ocused admin team with a clear vision. All in all, the team- work is tremendously enjoyable. Q: The “Music Unlimited” type o repertoire is not very popularly oriented or easy to market. Does this compromise the TCS fnancially ? Fang: I think all choirs ace the same chal- lenges. Choirs are actually the most populist or accessible among music ensembles. Pri- mary schools, middle schools, high schools, universities, neighborhoods and corporations all have choirs. Yet to run an excellent choir is more difcult, since choirs generally don’t pose the kind o technical hurdle that orches- tras — or instance — pose to t heir players. I also believe that unding limitations preclude almost all choirs in Taiwan rom turning proessional. Being no exception, our choris- ters come rom all walks o lie. We have tour guides, civil servants, engineers, teachers, stu- dents, researchers, we even had a judge at one point. Whatever their proession, these people are united by their love or choral music. Q: Any more thoughts on the 20th anniversary o the TSC? Fang: Something central to running a choir is how to retain the choristers, to oster in them a dream o the kind o artistic higher ground where you’re taking them. Perhaps the style o the music is not very mass-market ori- ented, but spiritually everyone involved eels ulflled. We also get to introduce to listeners the idea that perhaps choral music does not need to be confned to a certain mold, and can encompasses a wide range o styles. We have had listeners tell us that they don’t ‘get it,’ to which I say ‘it’s OK; and you can still come to get a eel or the new works.’ Meanwhile, we also present accessible avorites, done in the fnest manner, in addition to serious, demand- ing works. O course, rehearsing is hard work. The pieces could be downright bizarre and Chen is as strict as ever. But in the end, the music orged through this process becomes beautiul and sublime. To move listeners with music so that they go home with a ull heart is some- thing we hope to accomplish at every concert. I we can muster that, then let those who don’t oten listen to choral music come explore, and let those who do come discover something dierent yet equally satisying! The TCS will be perorming on Aug. 5 and Aug. 15, in Pintu ng ( 屏東) and Taipei ( 臺北) respectively, as part o “The Original” (原色) 20th anniversary tour.
