Au Pair in

the USA!

2008-2009

!A new adventure

is waiting for you

Congratulations on taking the first step towards a life-changing year. As an au pair, you will be an important member of an American host family. You will not just provide full-time childcare for a family while the parents are working; you will become integrated into American life and family life. Although you will be spending the majority of your days with your kids, you will also have time to experience much more. Attend classes at an American college, make friends with Americans and other au pairs in your area, and take the time to travel in your days or weeks off. This is your chance to step outside your normal daily life at home and become fluent in English, grow in maturity and independence and truly understand life in the American culture. We’re here to show you— you can live your dream!

Warm regards,

Jaike de Boer, Program Manager

Live your dream!

Step out of the box, into something new

THE REAL AMERICAN DREAM

“I have definitely improved my English skills. I

speak English every day with my host family

and with my friends so it´s almost impossible

to not do it. This experience has been a re-

ally good way for me to improve my English!”

“I think that I changed a lot. I got so mature

and grown up. I’m confident about myself

and it was the best and most important ex-

perience in my life. I would regret it so much

if I would have stayed in Austria instead of

going to the USA.”

“In school I enjoy learning the

English language and I have a

lot of fun time with my school-

mates, sharing experiences and

knowledge; and I’m having the

big opportunity to apply for a

fashion design course, which-

makes me very happy and proud

of myself.” “One thing I didn’t expect was the fantastic

friendship I would develop with my host family

and other au pairs in my city. I had so many

amazing people there to help me through my

year and they will be my friends and part of

my family always.”

WHY I LOVE...

Illinois“I love the state Illinois, in particular Chicago be-

cause there are so many exciting things to do! Only

just driving down to the city on the highway is awe-

some when you can see the skyline, even at night!

It gives me this amazing feeling in my tummy! The

people here are so nice and friendly, if you need

help, you don’t need to look for it long, everybody

wants to help you. And you only can say “wow”

when you see Illinois in winter!”

—Marlene, Austria

American sports“No matter how beautiful or rich in history Mas-

sachusetts is, these are not the things that people

living in this state are so proud of. It is the sports

as baseball, football, and basketball that are

important in lives of these people. I had never been

crazy about sports before, but the excitement of

people about Red Sox becoming World Champions

affected me too. And nothing could be more excit-

ing than watching Super Bowl with my host fam-

ily, friends and neighbors. Even though our team

didn’t win, this great game I will always remember.”

—Karolina, Slovakia

Colorado“Upon my au pair journey I traveled coast to coast.

And let me tell you proudly of the place that I

loved most. This place was Colorado; the state

one mile high. I loved those wondrous mountains

that made you stop and sigh. I loved my home;

The Valley. I loved the fluffy snow. I loved those

Coloradans who were way too nice to frown. The

photos and the memories of the state one mile

high will always be held in my heart even after

my goodbye.”

Makefriendshipsto last a lifetimeBeing an au pair is a great experience, but it’s also a full time job. Different than other jobs, you become part of a family. Your host family will be the most important support during your year. Our Cultural Care Au Pair host families are thoroughly screened and are ready to accept you as a member of the family. Who are they? A typical host family:

• Hastwoworkingparents

• Has2-3children

• Livesinthesuburbsnearamajorcity

• Hashostedanaupairbefore

• Isunlikeanyotherhostfamily

A program you can trustAfter arriving in the USA, all au pairs attend Cultural Care’s own Au Pair Training School in Long Island, NY. The support continues after the au pair arrives in her/his host family. Our au pairs and host families are supported by Cultural Care Au Pair at the local level by Local Childcare Coordinators (LCCs). Why should you trust Cultural Care?

• Wearethelargestworldwideaupairagency

• WearemembersoftheInternationalAuPairAssociation(IAPA)

• Wehaveofficesandagentsinover40countries

• Wehavebeeninbusinesssince1989

• Wehavethebeststaffandhostfamilies

“We have had many au pairs over the years and each one is special

to our family. Hanna was our first au pair back in 1998 and she has

been back to visit our family several times. She was there when

Katie was born and still refers to our children as ‘her kids’. Ryan and

Katie’s lives are so much richer because of the influence of all these

wonderful young ladies. The Robinson family is not just the four of us

but includes seven other fantastic women from around the world.”

“Many people wonder about this crazy job I have. It is really busy, chal-

lenging and sometimes stressful to be the LCC for 25 host families and

au pairs in my region but the rewards make it all worthwhile. Being

able to see these young people grow and develop over the course of the

year is amazing. I also love that we create more understanding of the

true America with the au pairs, as well as of many other cultures with

our host families. But the best part is seeing my au pairs and host fami-

lies form friendships that last for many years to come.”

Live your dream!

Become a member of an American family

9www.culturalcare.com

Through your experience living with a real American family you will become flu-ent in English and understand American culture from the inside. You will grow in independence and maturity while also adding great value to your resume. But you will also have the chance to travel independently. During your year you will have two weeks of paid vacation and a whole month to travel at the end of your program year.

“Now that I’ve returned from my au pair experience I really understand

how much I have changed. It wasn’t always easy, but I guess no full-time

job ever is! But because of this experience I have American kids that I

still love and plan to visit, and with the improvement in my English I have

been able to get a fantastic job. I don’t think you can get so much from

any other 12 month experience. Even though it was a scary decision to

spend one year away from my family and friends it was the best thing I

could have done.”
