Maddison BowenProject: The Polar Plunge

Troop # 5715Fairmont, WV

Gold AwardRecipients

Through my Gold Award project, I discovered so many things within myself as well as within my community. Before I began I discovered a need for a new freshmen orientation and that the students and staff at Fairmont Senior High School lacked leadership skills. While completing the project I discovered new leadership skills within myself. To complete my project I connected with the administration of my school, my fellow students, and the upcoming students. We all connected through the Polar Plunge orientation day. We all worked together as a team to accomplish this amazing event. My action project was planning and putting on the Polar Plunge. This orientation day was greatly needed as the outdated orientation plan was no longer helping the students. I took the bull by the horns and planned the new orientation day for students to attend the high school for one day. They got a full tour of the school, got to meet their teachers, socialize with upperclassmen, and got to discover all of the activities available to them at Fairmont Senior High School.

Joanna CollinsProject: Shedding Some Light on Conservation

Troop #4528Morgantown, WV

My project addressed the poor lighting at Izaak Walton League Chapter house, which in turn, decreased utilization of the League’s conservation efforts. The lighting I installed around the property makes the environment safer and will allow the property to be used for various League conserva-tion activities throughout the year. Through this project, I learned that to be a good leader, you must plan ahead, communicate effectively and have a strong understanding of all aspects of your project.

Lindsay CrawfordProject: Wellness Nature Trail

Troop #55007Oakland, MD

Throughout the Wellness Nature Trail Project, I discovered that although planning down to the second before taking action, unexpected issues can still arise before and even while taking action. I learned that you can not control mother nature, even though the forecast might say one thing mother nature can take a turn for better or worse.

Sarah DennisProject: Butterfly Learning Lab

Troop #60424Marietta, OH

The Butterfly Learning Lab is a handicap accessible garden for students that consists of eight butterfly beds, built behind Marietta Middle School. Our troop researched the butterflies and the type of plants they require to thrive. We received approval on the project and design from the Board of Education. We spent countless hours fund raising, building the raised garden beds, seats and area for wheelchair access. Local organizations in the community assisted throughout the project. The Butterfly Learning Lab will be used by the Multi-Disability Class at Marietta Middle School where students will participate in hands-on experiments through their sensory perceptions. The garden will be available to all students and community members for years to come.

Cera HollandProject: Cera’s ARK (Acts of Random Kindness)

Troop #34581Huntington, WV

Throughout my project I discovered that I am capable of achieving anything I put my mind to. I learned throughout this process that even through something so simple and easy I was able to gain life skills by taking control and getting done what needs to get done. I connected with many people throughout my project. I may not have me everyone the donations were given to, but I felt as though I have a connection with them, because I gave them the ability to be happy.

Kyra GriffithProject: Child’s Learning Area at HART Adoption Center

Troop #55007Oakland, MD

My Gold Award project concerned the creation of children’s furniture and pet care activity sheets for children. This material is now part of the new adoption center in my county . Our county has many animal organizations that have tried to help save the lives of unwanted pets in the past and have also tried to improve the county’s shelter. The improvement due to the county’s desire to fund the shelter was limited. Therefore, the HART organiza-tion decided to build a state of the art facility.

McKayla MooreProject: Clothing Closet

Troop #34982Frametown, WV

I discovered that there are a lot of children in my community that need clothing due to poverty and lack of help. I was able to connect with adultleaders of my church as was able to provide a closet of hope. Also, I was able to Connect with the children and Take Action and provide clothing to the children. The Clothing Closet impacted me by showing me how blessed I am and how it doesn’t take a lot to make a difference in others lives. The Clothing Closet impacted others by providing them with clothes and hope.

Savannah McSwainProject: Tech Savy

Troop #54555Morgantown, WV

My project Tech Savy has impacted me and others in several ways. I discovered that a lot of people in the world today, especially the other generations, have almost no clue how to navigate through my world today. I decided that I could impact several peoples lives by helping that issue. I connected with several people on several different levels. I connect-ed with peers, elderly that I helped and educators. I connected with them by getting close and teaching them what I knew and helping everyone I could. My actions were that of, finding anyone that I could help and trying my best and putting all my effort into this project, to help them learn about technology in our world today. This project really enhanced my leadership skills because now I can talk to people more in person, I’m not afraid to talk to a big crowd and I can now be a leader to a team! This project truly did change a lot of things in me, and I’m glad that the Girl Scouts was what did it!

Caroline NicholasProject: Goal Keeper’s Camp

Troop #34982Duck, WV

Goal Keepers’ Camp was a free soccer camp I created to fight childhood obesity in Braxton County. My campers and I learned so much in those two days we had camp. I learned that respect is more a personal goal than something to drill into your children, because the truth is that kids will be respectful to anybody that respects themselves. I think the reason for that is that self- respect is a huge value that people look for in a leader. My campers learned healthy habits, and not just in eating. That learned how vital team work really is, especially when the team was simply put together for a drill when I needed to see if they’d work with people other than their friends. The kids I coached could bond well with anybody else there, it was beyond impressive, and I made several new friends as well. Though we had a lot of laughs and smiles through the span of camp, we tackled a serious is-sue early in life together. In the last few years, I noticed the younger kids in our area gradually in-flate. It was becoming a serious problem and I knew it was my turn to act. The camp went off without a hitch, and while I think that I impacted those kids’ lives, I know they made a difference in mine.

Jordan PauleyProject: Don’t Bully Me

Troop #32847Sissonville, WV

My project addressed bullying in elementary school. I hoped to make students aware of the causes of bullying and to help them know how to respond when bullied. This project has made me a better problem solver, given me more self-confidence, better communication skills and a reason to stand up for what I believe in. As a victim of bullying, I learned that you can change what is happening. Every small act helps make a difference.

Samantha PrinceProject: Sam’s Back to School Bash

Troop #9054Wheeling, WV

I saw a need when I was volunteering at local after school programs and the local soup kitchen, the parents would wonder how they were going to get school supplies for their children. Other programs hand out supplies, but you are never given a choice. I wanted the kids to feel like they had a choice, where they could “shop” for their own supplies and feel like they earned the “money” themselves.

Lindsey PutmanProject: Fun for Everyone

Troop #1208Middleport, OH

My project has impacted because I have realized that there was a great need for some fun for the handicapped children to do that was not offered in my community. When I was first doing this project and found out there was nothing offered, that is when I knew what I was going to do to help out in my community. I talked to Tammy Barnhart, she is the manager at Forked Run and she said that people don’t realize how many people have left the park because they didn’t have anything for those type of children to do for fun. Then I went to the Meigs County Health Department and talked about grants and got my project started. Now my project has come a long way and I am having installed a handi-capped swing set and I have made two wheelchair accessible tables.

Anna SchlesProject: Dara Care Kits

Troop #4817Charleston, WV

While working on my Gold Award Project, I discovered that I could help people in need in simple ways. I discovered this by working with people at my school and church to get items for my kits. The project enhanced my leadership skills by teaching me how to be comfortable asking for help and showing people how they could help.

Sierra SchraderProject: 5&2 Outreach Project

iGirlScott Depot, WV

I worked with my church’s outreach and mission program to help people in need in Putnam County and Honduras. I collected clothing, shoes, food, hygiene items, dental items, emergency supplies, medical supplies, and disaster relief supplies. I worked with Pastor Joe Melendez to find out the needs in Honduras so I could get the items the families needed there. We served 1,500 people in Honduras and gave away 90 coats and boots.

Seneca ShettyProject: Waste Not - Want not

Troop #4528Morgantown, WV

My project addressed the issue of unsustainable resource use that is prevalent throughout the world, especially in the USA. I hoped not only to find a better way to dispose of the excessive amounts of paper that are used on a daily basis at the school, but also teach the students the importance of recycling. The school benefitted by acquiring a recycling system that is designed to give the school freedom to expand in the future and students learned about how to recycle at school and home.

Jacqueline TeedProject: Water Safety Awareness

Troop #4817Charleston, WV

Because of this project, I was able to develop skills in regard to articulating my ideas, and motivating people to act towards a common cause. I learned how to be a leader in my community by encourag-ing others to learn more about water safety, and by working with local community centers. This project also improved my communication and timemanagement skills, and taught me that one person can really make a difference.

Jian TravisProject: Landon’s Library

Troop #55004Oakland, MD

The Oakland area has many children from low income homes. The percent of free and reduced meals for the Oakland area elementary schools for 2012 was close to 70%.The information was sup-plied by the Garrett County Board of Education. This information shows the great need for Landon’s Library in my community. Landon’s Library is not a real library building but an organization founded by Crystal Roberson-Boal and Brian Boal in memory of their young son. Landon’s Library has the philosophy that reading well requires reading often, and it is essential that young children have easy access to age appropriate books. The organization holds monthly play dates that gives children ages 2-5 a fun-filled hour and a half to experience the magic of books through age-appropriate play and learning stations. The children attending each play date receive at least one book to take home. I also believe children need books to enjoy which will help them learn to love reading; therefore, I wanted to help Landon’s Library and earn my Girl Scout Gold Award.

Moriah VosteenProject: Fitness Trail Gold

Troop #3209Wintersville, OH

My project addressed the lack of free workout areas open to the public. With a free fitness trail, I hope my community becomes more physically active. All ages can find some way to use the trail to stay fit. Through this project, I learned that not everything will go as planned and when you come to an obstacle, you should keep calm and fix it the best as possible. I also learned to push myself past my social comfort zone. I do not like talking on the phone, and especially not to strangers. Now, after this project, I am more confident making phone calls and approaching strangers for a good cause. I even gained a new skill - learning how to chat online. I did this with the equipment company. I know I am capable of asking for financial support for a good reason and I have become a great thank you note writer. I also now know I can come up with an idea and through lots of work, make it a reality. This project has better prepared me for the challenge of college.

Medal of Honor

Every Girl Scout is prepared to do heroic things. When a girl does something exceptional, such as saving someone’s life, she is honored with this award. The Medal of Honor is an award given to a Girl Scout who has shown presence of mind (a clear and calm head) and true Girl Scout spirit during an emergency.

There is no question that these girls’ actions made a difference during the emergency situation they faced, for their families, themselves and the world. Today, we celebrate their bravery.

Emily Milam, Shade, OHEmily’s mother suffered from heat exhaustion and dehydration and became very ill. She pulled the car off to the side of the road because she could not continue to drive. Emily found her mother’s phone and contacted her father. He called for help and then called her back. She stayed on the phone with her father and continued to care for her mother until help arrived. She received the Medal of Honor for her heroic efforts. Congratulations Emily!

Jade Neubauer, Elkins, WVJade’s brother suffered a seizure while bathing. He was found under water by Jade’s father and brother. Jade found her father’s phone and dialed 911. She told them the address and the information they needed to dispatch help to the site. She then called her grandmother to come and assist with the emergency. We are very saddened by the passing of Jade’s brother. However, we want to recognize Jade for her heroic efforts in attempting to save her brother’s life. Congratulations Jade!

Special Recognitions

Girl Scouting develops leaders. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience encompasses everything we know and love about Girl Scouts - troops, camp, patches, cookies, etc. - and enhances these elements with critical leadership processes and outcomes. Developing a purposeful leader is as much about the journey as it is the destination. Throughout their experiences, girls develop a variety of skills and characteristics (positive values, conflict resolution, problem solving). The result is a generation of girls who lead with courage, confidence and character.

Such is the case with girls in this Special Recognitions category. Below is one such girl that exhibits extraordinary leadership skills and deserves to be recognized for her efforts.

Alexandra Miller, Grantsville, MDAlexandra Miller has been a Girl Scout since first grade, and today as a junior at Northern High School in Garrett County, Maryland, she is a bright and shining example of the courage, confidence and character that girls develop when they participate in a program such as Girl Scouts. She has already earned her Gold Award, and she says of this experience “I developed skills in presentation, communication and perseverance, all of which have been an integral part in achieving my goals.” In April, Alex and her robotics team entered the First Robotics Championship Competition in St. Louis where she took home one of only ten “Dean’s List Awards” offered at the competition. In March, at the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair, Alex was one of two students to receive a scholarship worth nearly $6,000 from Carnegie Mellon to attend their AP Pre-College program. She received the Young Women in STEM Award from the Carnegie Mellon Society of Women Engineers and the Yale Engineer-ing and Science Award for the Most Outstanding Exhibit in Engineering. She was named a Carson Scholar, has won an award from Aerotech, has been recognized by the Institute of Electrical Engineers in Pittsburgh, has won multiple awards from Northern High School for academics as well as the Prudential Spirit of the Community Award, and she hasn’t even graduated from high school yet! Alex feels that it’s important for girls to have strong role models, especially in male-dominated fields such as science, technology, engineering and math, which is why programs like Girl Scouts are so important. It lets a girl know she can be anything and do anything, develop her skills in a safe environ-ment and it opens a world of possibilities.
