dear Friends and supporTers,

This January marks the tenth anniversary of Parivaar. From bringing 3 children into a rented building, it has been a wonderful journey building up this Family of 865 resident children and 170 dedicated staff.

2013 has seen Parivaar make great strides, and I am thrilled and proud to be able to share what we have accomplished.

This year we increased our resident children by the hundreds, admitting 135 more kids into Parivaar. We also increased our outreach efforts in far flung tribal areas in and around the state where we operate, West Bengal.

We began construction on new dorms on both our boys’ and girls’ campuses, and on our new school.

We launched our new website this year, highlighting some of the most special moments in Parivaar’s history and answering many of the questions our supporters ask. We also expanded our Facebook page, keeping friends of Parivaar more up to date with what is happening with our kids and staff.

2013 was also the first time I traveled to the United States. Parivaar Awareness Campaigns were held around the country, in Massachusetts, New York, Washington D.C., Illinois and California. It was deeply inspiring for me to witness the interest of and receive encouragement from people who had never heard about Parivaar until being invited to an Awareness Campaign. It was also humbling to meet with so many supporters who have been with us, in some cases, for years.

There are many hurdles we still face in our effort to reach even more kids in and around West Bengal. I feel extremely confident, though, that with supporters like you, we will continue to change the destinies of ever more children. Thank you enormously for you friendship and support. I cannot wait to see what the next ten years bring.

yours, Vinayak

Founder’s Message

Page 3: Take up one idea. - Parivaar

Parivaar exists for this very purpose: To change the destinies of these children and in doing so, to change the destiny of India itself.

Each child who comes to Parivaar becomes part of our family. That family relationship is maintained beyond our kids simply turning 18 or graduating from high school. We commit to them as surrogate parents, mentors, and friends for their entire lives.

Our staff, called Seva-vratis, are true mission bearers for Parivaar. They work tirelessly for the Parivaar community to achieve success in each issue area we cover: education, nutrition, arts and culture and play.

For our children, the sky is the limit. There is no preconceived notion about what our kids can and can’t accomplish when they leave Parivaar. Each child is given the support to dream big and the tools to make those dreams a reality.

Providing excellence in care is what we do. Parivaar’s commitment is to changing children’s destinies. That’s a big responsibility — one we don’t take lightly.

pariVaar Means “FaMily.”

At Parivaar, we believe each child is a unique and special addition to our ever-growing family. Our approach to care and development is holistic: a combination of love, community, responsibility, education, service and fun. The kids at Parivaar are not treated as charity or as clients, just as the care-givers and teachers are not treated as employees. Everyone is part of the Parivaar family. When we invest in the life of a child at Parivaar, we are investing in that child’s future, her family’s future, and the future of India.

our prograMsAt Parivaar, we have three main program areas:

Parivaar has both a girls and boys campus. Each campus has dorm-like housing, a library, computer lab, dining area, cultural and multi-purpose halls, play area, and study-rooms.

The boys’ campus, called Parivaar Ashram, with 572 boys in residence, is home to Parivaar’s main school, which all our kids, boys and girls, attend. This is also home to our main sports field, where kids play during recess, in the evenings and on weekends.

After having a common campus for boys and girls for eight years, the girls’ campus, called Parivaar Sarada Teertha, was opened in June 2011. It has almost 300 girls currently in residence. This campus is located only one mile from Parivaar Ashram.

Parivaar is more than just safe, clean, comfortable homes for boys and girls. It is also a place for children to get a superior education, with a rigorous schedule of regular classes, tutoring, and test preparation. We have our own K-10th grade school called Amar Bharat Vidyapeeth (ABV). It is located adjacent to the boys’ campus, and both boys and girls study there until Grade 10. For Grades 11 and 12 kids go to one of a few good schools located nearby. After 12th grade, kids enter a university program based on interest and aptitude.

Parivaar’s accelerated learning program, called Bridge, is where children who are not at the correct grade level based on age - the case for most incoming kids - are taught until they are caught up.

educaTion

Village iniTiaTiVesParivaar engages in a number of activities to help ameliorate the health and economic conditions of people in our community. We have five main village programs:

Education Excellence Program: We support the education of 3,000 students from surrounding village areas with books and other materials.

General Welfare: Parivaar provides medical assistance, vaccination campaigns, emergency pecuniary services, and sports events for village youth.

Ambulance Service for Surrounding Villages: Parivaar runs a 24-hour ambulance service for the population in the adjoining rural areas.

Monthly Foodstock Scheme for Old and Ailing Villagers: 800 needy elders receive a stipulated quantity of rice, dal (lentils), oil and other essentials required for the month. They also get help acquiring medicines and physician’s visits when required.

Field-based work in tribal areas: Parivaar does outreach in over 100 villages to some of the most impoverished tribes in West Bengal and Jharkhand through its local community volunteers and associated field-groups. These populations suffer from chronic malnutrition, and members of these communities live in sub-human conditions without the benefit of education and the most basic modern amenities. More than 350 children have been admitted into Parivaar’s residential program from these areas.

PARIVAARsTaTs

2013 has been a year of growth and accomplishment for Parivaar. For the first time our Founder, Vinayak Lohani, traveled to the United States. He met with old supporters and cultivated new donors, growing our organization’s base of support in the US.

2013 also saw Parivaar break ground on 3 capital expansion projects: a new girls’ dormitory, a new boys’ dormitory, and a new day school with capacity for 2000 students. We also outfitted our Girls’ Campus (Sarada Teertha) with 30 brand new computers. Finally, we launched a new website - parivaar.org - detailing our accomplishments to date and our plans for the future. We also expanded upon our vibrant Facebook page as a platform to send weekly updates to our supporters.

Reaching our 10 year mark this January, we saw the first 8 of Parivaar’s kids – with us since 2003 - pass Grade 12 and enter classes at local universities. Additionally, after much hard training, 12 of Parivaar’s kids were selected to participate in State-level Athletic events.

We also continued with our support programs in our local community, providing services to Thousands oF children and

ailing seniors in The Villages around Parivaar.

We went from 730 children at the end of 2012 to 865 as of January 2014 (293 girls and 572 boys).

Parivaar has become West Bengal’s largesT Free residenTial insTiTuTion For children
