President’s Message:
My first order of business is to once again
thank Scott Rutherford for the use of her lovely
home for our Labor Day Match.
It was a great success, perfect weather, a
good attendance, and much fun!
Also, the club held a very successful Earthdog
Seminar on July 17th taught by AKC Field
Rep, Barbara Teigen.
Many thanks to Jan Silva for organizing the
Seminar and to Carleen Farrington to hosting it
@ her home.
The following day we held another Earthdog
training day where all the seminar attendees
had a chance to practice what they had
learned.
The board has been busy making more
progress on our AKC application. We have
one more bylaw revision to vote on and a
second “B” level Match to hold.
Then we can apply for “A” level status.
We’re getting there!
Our upcoming events include another
Earthdog Fun Day on October 23rd and our
Annual Holiday Party on December 11th.
Please look for more details on these events in
this newsletter and I’m looking forward to
seeing many of you then.
I hope those of you that went to Montgomery
had a great time.
We’ll be looking forward to hearing your brags!
Meanwhile, enjoy your Terriers!
Best Wishes to all,
Mary

Labor Day Match Report 2010 The New England Terrier Club’s Labor Day Match was held on September 6th at Scott Rutherford’s grounds in Uxbridge, MA. The weather could not have been more perfect and the grounds were immaculate. Even though the club had not hosted this match the previous two years, 36 people (including 18 non-members) were able to attend. Sweepstakes Judge, Judy Hunter, was presented with an entry of 20 puppies, ranging in age from 3 – 15 months. The largest entry was in the 3-6 puppy class where 8 pups were judged. Across all the age groups, several breeds were represented, 6 Airedale, 4 Cairns, 3 each of Australians and Scottys, and one each of Dandy, Kerry, Norfolk and Welsh. There were no veterans entered. Best in Sweeps was awarded to the 9 month old Airedale bitch puppy, Amity, owned by Susan Rodgers and Shirley Good. Juniors were next, also judged by Judy Hunter. There were 3 entries in the PeeWee under 9, each showing Norwichs, and one each in Novice Jr 9-11 as well as Novice Intermediate 12-14. Best Jr was awarded to Ally Ridz, from the Novice Inter 12-14 class. This was followed by a brief break for lunch. The club provided cake, in celebration of both our 40th anniversary, as well as the first steps taken toward AKC recognition. Our Confirmation judge, Kathi Brown had a entry of 26 dogs, with Airedales accounting for 9 entries. The Cairns were next with 5, and we even saw our first Dandie in quite some time. Puppy Group results were 1st place to the Airedale # 210, Amity, the 9 month old bitch puppy that had been awarded Best in Sweeps, owned by Susan Rodgers & Shirley Good. 2nd place awarded to Cairn puppy #217 Hilltop Thunder, owned by Joe & Dora Keating. 3rd to Scotty #204 Stoneleigh Marvelous Maeve, owned by Susan Miley, and 4th to Parson Russell # 224 Jeep, owned by Pat Wilcox Adult Group #1 was awarded to Smooth Fox #221, Mo, a 4 year old male, owned by Mary Smith. 2nd place to Cairn #219, Falcroft On the Run owned by Peter & Lin Falat, 3rd place to Scotty #205, Rococo’s Macalister Grant owned by George & Mary Beth Grant, and 4th place to Welsh #215, Bremadog Like the Sun, owned by Karla Gilman. Best In Match was awarded to #221, the Smooth Fox Terrier, Mo, owned by Mary Smith. We would like to take a moment that thank everyone both on the board and off that worked so tirelessly to make this a successful event. Most of all we would like to extend our most sincere thanks to Scott Rutherford, for hosting this event. Without her hospitality, this event would not be possible. Sincerely, Lin Falat & Maureen Lee

I was surfing the Internet looking for items of interest for this newsletter and
found this tidbit of information that can hurt us breeders even more :
Humane USA-Massachusetts was formed for the singular purpose
of electing individuals to public office in Massachusetts
who care about the humane treatment of animals, and defeating those who
oppose it.
Founded in 1997, after the 1996 ballot question to restrict cruel traps was
passed, they created a reportedly nonpartisan political arm of the animal
protection movement in Massachusetts.
Please Note:
Nonprofit groups are not permitted by law to support or oppose
candidates.
However, it seems that a Political Action Committee (PAC) was formed by
them so they can engage in the important work of striving to elect public
officials who will create a body of law that protects animals and shapes the
way people interact with and treat animals.
Humane USA-Mass does this by seeking out and publicizing the position of
candidates on animal protection issues, making endorsements and donating
to the campaigns of humane candidates, and mobilizing volunteers to give
grassroots support to favorable candidates.
They also take aim to make candidates aware that, with or without large sums
of money to support campaigns, animal protectionists are a large voting block
in Massachusetts whose interest in helping animals must be taken seriously.

Judith Hunter’s Search
I had come to the end of my line of wires and wanted a new girl to breed and
have fun with.
After calling around the eastern states and found no one that had anything
they either wanted to sell, co-own or had any pups or would lease a bitch.
This was a dilemma!
I called my handler, Diane Harrison who breeds Kerry Blues and has friends
in Europe. She called a few of her friends and again did not have much luck.
She then surfed the web and found this Hungarian site that advertised wires
for sale.
After many questions from the breeder and videos, he was kind enough to
make and send., Diane suggested and I agreed on a young girl.
We then checked on her parents. Her dam was pretty but we did not know
much about her pedigree. We looked at her sire's side and the were all
Travella champions which seemed to be good movers with good basic
structure.
So -- we decided to take a chance and we sent for our girl.
KLONDIKE IOTA
I cannot say enough good things about Diane and her knowledge of dogs
and her help in allowing me to have a great little girl to continue having fun in
dogs.
Gier Pederson and Raus Kraus were heard to say many wonderful things
about her and she was awarded two 5 point majors and BOB at the
Wrentham shows, this year, where she won the New England Fox Terrier
Specialty over two champions. Her breeder is thrilled and we are happy for
him.
**Hopefully Judy, will forward us a winning photo for
our Website.
VETERANS IN THE SHOW RING
Permission to post this lovely piece was given by Terry Russo.
"I see that the *Smiths* have entered their dog in the Veterans Class. Apparently
there is no one in this Club who knows that it is customary to offer a round of
applause for those that are entered.
Six months ago, at this same show, I entered my Veteran Dog in this same class.
Not one person applauded. Not one person came up and said anything.
Not one person came over to give him a kind word or a pat.
Not one person made him feel he belonged again.
He was no threat to anyone.
He wasn't going to beat anyone, take any points, or win anything.
He was just an old dog who thought he was special again - back in the ring for
the first time in many years.
Maybe he even recalled his "Glory Days". He would have loved to have met
anyone there. He would have welcomed you like an old friend. You didn't have to
say anything nice about him if you didn't want to.
But just in case you can't think of anything to say about a Veteran Dog, here are
some suggestions: "It was nice to see him out there". Or go up to him and tell
him he's a "Good Boy". Or tell his owner that you are glad that they brought him.
Those aren't exactly compliments, but they will please his owner and make him
glad that they brought him. I don't think that's asking too much. One day, all too
soon, all your beautiful young dogs will be old dogs too. Maybe one day you'll
enter them in a Veterans Class. And I hope that you do. Or, like many of us, you
remember that old friend, now gone, and wish you still had the chance.
They deserve it. It may be their final time in the sun - their last time out in front of
people.
Their last time to ever be in the ring. My old dog is a Fool. He thought he was
wonderful that day. He thought he belonged. Instead, he was ignored. I have
thought about this for 6 months now, and wasn't going to say anything.
But on his behalf, and that of any other Veteran, I hope that something like this
never occurs again. As a Club of (Breed) Fanciers, you should feel ashamed.
Even if you dislike the dog or his owner, at least show Good Sportsmanship and
do the Right Thing. Show others that you have respect for your breed. Make that
Veteran Dog feel wanted and special again. Let him know that you are glad to
see him. It will make his day. You may never get the chance again. Thank you."
As Lynda began reading it, the hush that fell over the room was incredible.
Bless her heart, my friend Lynda broke into tears as she struggled through
reading this. EVERYONE in the room lowered their heads, and many of them
began to cry also, including the President (who is a man). I tried my best to hold
my head up and refrain from tears, again.
The President strode over to where I was sitting and in a broken voice said
"Terry...... ..I am SO sorry. He is such a wonderful dog. There is no excuse for
what happened to you. And to him." As I started to say that I "wasn't going to
say anything" again, the room nearly burst with everyone trying to talk at once.
The discussion that followed was both eye-opening and of valuable purpose.
Many came up to me in tears, with hugs and apologies. I am a very private and
shy person, not given to sharing my deepest feelings easily. This had been an
incredibly difficult thing for me to do, but in honor of my Veteran and all the
others out there, I felt it must be done. Was it worth it?
When *Mr. Smith* took his lovely 12 1/2 year old dog (neutered due to testicular
cancer) into the ring, our entire membership remained - and applauded and
"whooped and hollered" him with every move.
The Judge moved to the center of the ring on his final go round and applauded,
as did her ring stewards. Others nearby, watching other breeds, came over and
remarked on how wonderful it was to see a Veteran being treated like that.
Many (including me) asked to take his picture. Everyone complimented him and
his owners. If only my old dog had enjoyed such a day... Was it worth it?
You tell me... Sorry for the length of this, but so many in other breeds who heard
about what happened have already asked me for a copy of my written paper
that I thought perhaps it was something that needed to be shared.
Amazing how quickly word spreads amongst us dog people. It's often said "You
can't teach an old dog new tricks". But I know one old dog who taught
something of great value."
Sadly, this is all so true. Remember those
Veteran Dogs with Respect. (Carleen)
