We then approached the school and the SGB denied that the allegations were true. We conducted our own investigations - we went to the SGB chairperson’s and the other two member’s houses and we found each having a box of stationery which includes exercise books, pens, pencils, instrument sets, ruler and erasers.” “The SGB members found with boxes of stationery agreed that they had stolen them from the school. We wanted to open a case against them but they begged us not to. We took a resolution that since they have brought back the stationery they need to apologize to the learners at the assembly for stealing from them, which they have done,” said Patose. He added that they suspect that the SGB has been misusing the school’s funds. “We want the Department of Education to investigate the allegations and we require a fully audited report by June. We are sending a strong message to corrupt SGBs that COSAS is coming after them,” concluded Patose. A member of the SGB who wanted to remain anonymous said, “The allegations of mismanagement of funds are true. There is a lot of money that was allocated for different projects at school that did not materialise and funds disappeared. Some of the SGB members have ripped the school off.” SGB chairperson Lucky Mathabela refused to comment on the allegations, stating that they have been disbanded by the Department of Education. Nanagolo Leopeng, Gauteng Department of Education’s spokesperson said, “The Department is aware of the matter and will soon launch a preliminary investigation. The Mokwena family and the police are searching for Kagiso Mokwena (6) from 1494 Tshongweni section in Katlehong who went missing on 9 January this year.Sbongile Mokwena, the child’s grandmother, said
her grandson left home around midday to play in the park with his friend, whose parents are her tenants. “His friend came back home alone and informed me that an unknown woman took my grandson with her. He showed me the direction they took and we have tried to search for them without success since that unfortunate night,” said Mokwena. She alleges that her tenant’s son told them that an unknown woman came to the park where they were playing and offered to buy them sweets. The woman gave the children money to buy sweets and when they came back, took Mokwena with her.Captain Augustinah Selepe said, “There are no developments so we are still investigating the case of kidnapping. The lack of a swimming pool, the scorching sun and underdevelopment in Zonkizizwe have all contributed to children from the area swimming in the dangerous Kliprivier.Concerned resident Lucky Tshidi said this unfortunate situation puts the lives of children at risk and something must be done urgently to save innocent lives. “Children between the age of 9 and 14 years are always swimming in the river. It is dangerous in that some are drowning; we
also rescued one girl. The river is situated next to an open space with reeds and maize; children might be victims of rape and murder,” said Tshidi.Another resident, Dumisani Makhomboti, said, “The water that the children are swimming in is dirty - they coud be infected with water-borne diseases. We are appealing to the municipality to construct a swimming pool for our children. There are rumours that there is a snake in the river and the lives of children swimming in the river are at risk.”Speaking to tame TIMES, the children swimming in the river pointed out that swimming is their favourite sport. However, the lack of a swimming pool in the area has left them with no alternative but to swim in the river. They are appealing for a swimming pool to be built. They said the closest swimming pools in Eden Park, Thokoza and Vosloorus are too far for them, as they need transport money to travel there and back.Ward councillor Kenneth Teboho Letsoho said he was aware of the incidents of children drowning in streams and the Kliprivier next to Zonkizizwe. “Last year we rescued one child who had drowned in the river. The other challenge is that the community is digging holes to access building soil and when it rains the holes are filled with water and children swim inside them. The construction of a swimming pool was never raised by the parents in public meetings. We urged parents to propose its construction during public meetings so that action could be taken to save the children,” said Letsoho.

The top twelve achievers of the Kutlwanong class of 2014 were awarded with trophies and certificates of achievement from Liberty at the Kutlwanong award ceremony.The prestigious event was held at Liberty’s premises in Braamfontein and attended by learners from Kutlwanong centres in Katlehong and Umbumbulu in KwaZulu Natal. The Katlehong centre performed extremely well, with top ten learners from the following secondary schools: Ponego Secondary School, Sijabulile Secondary School, Zonkizizwe Secondary School, Fumana Secondary School and Alafang Secondary School. Michael Bila was the number one learner, with six distinctions and 100% in maths and physical science. Bila said his success was the result of hard work. “A positive attitude towards education, respect, team work accompanied by hard work is the key to success,” said Bila.Ivan Mzimela, Group Executive, Strategic Services at Liberty, applauded the learners for passing Matric and gave them university tips. “Go out there and change the world.
The colour of your skin will never determine your future. Avoid abusing your freedom at university by refraining from partying and be disciplined. Katlehong based Reahile Primary School recently unveiled its road safety programme and its team of school patrollers - the brainchild of Regent. Speaking to the media, Bruce Smuts, the founder and head of Active Education, said the scholar patroller programmes emerged from the organization’s extensive experience in school sports coaching since 1998, which is aimed at ensuring that children have fun and creative sports experiences.“Over the years our Active Education leaders witnessed far too many road accident tragedies in and around schools. We are therefore naturally driven to find a practical way of changing this situation. The Active Education road safety and scholar patrol programmes uses the organizational skills and training experience we develop in sports coaching. We have a programme that is highly effective in not only addressing traffic management around
schools, but also instilling a practical sense of road safety in children,” said Smuts. The school principal Dorah Theko said the programme is both the beginning of good things and the end of troubles. She said Reahile Primary School was the only school without school patrollers. She said they had had several incidents in which learners were knocked down by cars. Tebogo Makofane, (35) a former learner from the school, was instrumental in introducing Reahile Primary School to the school patrollers programme and Regent programme. “A few years ago I lost my 3-year old child to a road accident; hence I’m passionate about the road safety campaign.” Ward 51 councillor Ronny Rampai urged learners to respect the patrollers and promised that more would be done for the school. “Sporting resources will be created in the school so that the safety of the learners would not be compromised and their safety could be then guaranteed. The Regent initiative will go a long way to ensure their safety.”

My Body My Space is a new festival of public arts happenings co-ordinated by The Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative (FATC) in Ekurhuleni between 2 and 7 February. The event features a range of works by Johannesburg’s top contemporary choreographers and dance companies, community based artists and crafters. It celebrates 20 years of democracy as it explores issues relating to gender violence and the impact of HIV/Aids; and aims to re-stitch communities and spaces that have previously been separated, to shine a light on the role of women, children and other vulnerable members of society and find a shared voice and experience around critical, personal and social issues.The festival will play out as a series of “guerrilla style” art interventions, installations and live public performances, erupting on the streets and pavements of Ekurhuleni, in hubs of city life, under-served communities and at the intersection of its diverse citizenry. Since antiquity, philosophers and architects have imagined cities as bodies, with arteries and veins through which pedestrians and traffic stream; My Body My Space seeks to make the connection between the individual and the city patent.
With the City of Ekurhuleni as a metaphor for the human body, FATC envisages the festival and events unfolding along the city’s numerous critical routes and arteries, which serve as major transport routes but are also significant in their linking of historically, politically, socially and
economically separated
communities. The installation of My Body My Space will take place during 2015 as follows: February 7 from 11am to 4pm: Central Nervous System at Wattville’s OR Tambo Cultural precinct. The programme comprises dance, music, cultural events and performance art, as well as a craft and
vendors’ market, creating a rich experience that activates every corner of the cultural precinct. The audience will travel with the programme on foot. They will be guided through an array of happenings, performances and installations placed at strategic points along the
route.

Kasie FM’s Jabulani Xhasa “Dj X” recently celebrated his 34th birthday in style by unveiling his latest inspirational projects on air.The inspirational projects are under the banner of his company Excellence Unlimited. According to Xhasa, the latest project includes a compilation album, book of short stories and various accessories ranging from T-shirts to inspirational messages written on key-holders. “I decided to unveil my inspirational work to the Kasie FM listeners across Ekurhuleni. My compilation album is called Dj X and Friends which is part of my inspirational work. The album is a mixture of RnB, Pop and House music, which consists of 10 tracks. Ekurhuleni artists featured in the
album include: Madluphuthu, Mpho Putini, Kruna, Zipho, Untshebe, Vice, Lifika labo Tshabelo, Sabelo Mthembu and others. A newborn baby’s head was found inside a plastic bag next to a bar building in Nhlapho section in Katlehong recently.The body of the newborn baby, who is estimated to be one to two weeks old, was missing, however; and Katlehong North police officers are investigating a case of murder. It is alleged that the community members in the area saw the head and alerted the police. The motive for the killing is unknown and no arrests have been made so far. Police are appealing to the community to come forward with information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators and the identification of the baby’s family.

The OR International Airport, Specsavers, Ster-kinekor, Waltons and Awesome Solar held a Back to School campaign for Manzini Primary School learners recently. According to the OR International Airport Assistant General Manager Kris Reddy, the future of the rainbow nation lies in the books children are reading. He urged learners to focus on education. “We will be visiting different school starting from January 27 to February 27 to promote our Back to School campaign. We have donated half a million to this programme that will benefit four schools within the greater Thokoza and Tembisa area,” explained Reddy. Ster-Kinekor Corporate Social Investment (CSI) Manager Geraldine Engelman said the initiative is close to their hearts. She said there are some learners who are visually impaired, hence they brought a mobile clinic for 90 learners to have their eyes screened. Specsavers administration manager Jerry Chweneyagae said learners who have eye challenges would be retested. “Learners who have possible eye damage will be referred to an eye institute for further treatment and those with minor eye challenge will be given spectacles. All the learners who had their eyes tested were selected by the educators across all grades,” explained Chweneyagae. A total of 335 Grades R and 1 learners received additional stationery and schoolbags, as most of them are in their first year at school. Grade 2 to 7 learners were given party packs; some had their eyes tested and all were entertained by the school Principal Thulani Sibisi. He added that, “The initiative of supplementing the stationery already handed out by the Department of Education brings relief to most parents who were expected to buy additional stationery. We are grateful for the sponsorship and we commend it to our learners.”

Welcome, everybody, to 2015. As we all know, people have different New Year’s resolutions concerning their health and eating habits. Some people want to lose some kilos, while others want to gain some or maintain their normal weight. It is all up to the individual to choose how they want their bodies to look like. This year in our cooking column we will be providing you with nutritious and delicious recipes. We are kicking
off the year with a lemon bar recipe contributed by Crissy from Ubuntu Creative School. The recipe is nutritiously rich in calcium and vitamin C.
PREHEAT oven to 180° C. Line an 8-inch-square (20cm) baking pan with foil, leaving a 2-inch (5cm) overhang. Spray foil with non-stick cooking spray.BEAT butter, powdered sugar and salt in large mixing bowl until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in flour on low speed until just combined (mixture will be crumbly). Press dough on to bottom of prepared pan.BAKE for 15 to 20 minutes or until lightly golden.WHISK together egg yolks, sweetened condensed milk, lemon juice and lemon peel until smooth. Pour over crust. Bake for an additional 25 to 30 minutes or until set. Cool completely in pan on wire rack.REFRIGERATE for 2 hours or until firm. Using
foil overhang, lift on to a work surface; cut into 20 bars. Dust with additional powdered sugar before serving. Squares will hold, covered, in refrigerator for up to 3 days.A FEW TIPS:If you make the bars in advance, don’t dust with powdered sugar. Only do this right before serving.To produce really clean slices, place the baking pan with lemon bars in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes before cutting. Wipe the knife between cuts. If desired, trim away edges. For serving, place bars in individual paper cupcake liners. This way guests can easily help themselves and you need not worry about dessert plates.

What’s going on in Soweto?
LOCAL HAWKERS: are often much less well
resourced than foreign spaza-owners.

The recent looting of foreign spaza shops in Soweto has grabbed headlines, concerned investors and had government washing their hands of the problem with words like “criminality” and “xenophobia.” Is the problem really that simple, though? Are the reasons for the stealing of millions of rands worth of stock [http://www.citypress.co.za/news/counting-cost-sowetos-looting/ ] just jealousy, criminality and xenophobia – or is the situation more complex?While jealousy plays a part in the looting, it is not the whole story. Black apartheid entrepreneur Richard Maponya himself said in 2013, “that white businesspeople and foreigners should not be allowed to dominate business in townships. ‘Soweto has suddenly become a place where white businesspeople want to do business, when small entrepreneurs of the area should be given an opportunity to own business here.’ ” [http://www.citypress.co.za/business/bee-real-thing-richard-maponya/] In the past ten years, there has been a wave of big supermarkets and filling station shops moving into many townships like never before. In many cases, the only businesspeople able to undercut their prices are the Somali, Pakistani and Bangladeshi shopowners who sell their cut-price products from behind bars, looking more like bank-tellers than friendly corner shopowners.
Many sources claim that foreign spaza-owners are undocumented foreigners, who pay no tax to the South African government and bribe the police with airtime and colddrinks to turn a blind eye. A visit to any one of our Gauteng townships will reveal a sharp contrast between their typically well-stocked and secured premises and the makeshift plastic sheets held up by sticks that locals generally sell their spinach, bananas and amakipkip (sweet, coloured popcorn) from. So jealousy is no doubt a factor when foreigners are targetted, but it is not the only one. The looting frenzy in Soweto allegedly started with the shooting of a South African 14-year-old by a foreign spaza-owner. The same thing happened in Etwatwa, Daveyton late in October last year, although it was not as widely reported - apparently a young nyaope addict was caught stealing from a Pakistani-owned shop and shot in the foot by the owner. Local residents then sent all the foreign spaza-owners in the area packing, but not for long - they are now all back in business.If government does not blame the problem on criminality and xenophobia, it will be forced to admit that its policies have failed to make inroads into South Africa’s massive problems of unemployment and corruption; and, of course, next month the Honourable Malema will be back in Parliament telling our President to “pay back the money.” According to an old Zimbabwean proverb,
“a fish rots from the head down.” So how can our first citizen expect standards of integrity from the poor, the uneducated and the unemployed that he himself does not display? How can government urge local entrepreneurs to work together to compete with foreign spaza-owners when the latter have a reputation of non-payment of taxes, unfair labour practices, bribery of the authorities, possession of illegal weapons - and even impregnation of local young girls? Who should parents report their suspicions to when they believe their children are in danger of being shot by trigger-happy shopowners with illegal weapons who have the police on their payroll?The recent spate of looting – although an example of inexcusable public violence and
criminality - was perhaps not so much about unrestrained thuggery as targeted retribution and intimidation. According to the City Press, “Next to Sea Point, there is a shop owned by a South African. It was not plundered. All foreign-owned tuck shops in Zola North were closed this week.” [http://www.citypress.co.za/news/cops-told-us-loot/] The Sunday Times printed a photograph on their front page of a wall with the spray-painted message “Somalis, hands off our spazas.” [250115]In the meantime, however, poor Soweto consumers who rely on the low prices charged by foreign spaza-owners will have less food to put on their plates. Those renting premises to foreigners may also suffer.

South Africans were holding their thumbs when the home team opened their scoring account with Kaizer Chiefs wonder boy Mandla Mahalangu’s volley in the first 17 minutes of the game. However, our team lived up to their reputation of scoring first in all their group stage games, but failed dismally to dictate terms in the middle of the park and consolidate a lead. Black Star demonstrated experience and vigour to come back into the game when they started camping in the South African half, giving no space to the Mzansi boys to breathe. The Ghana coach introduced a double substitute late in the second half, which accelerated the attack of the Black Stars and their efforts were finally rewarded when John Boye drew level in the 75th minute. Mashaba made a desperate change when he introduced Amakhosi
pair Reneilwe Letsholonyana and Bernard Parker. However, the Ghanaian engine room was already on fire and the Bafana team could not handle the constant wave of attacks on their goal mouth.
