Mothosele obtained distinctions in Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Science, Sesotho and English. “My marks are good enough to guarantee me a spot in most of the universities in the country. However, my poor financial background is the main stumbling block towards achieving my dream. My mother is unemployed and my father is the only breadwinner at home. My mother is studying nursing under a sponsorship. It would be an additional burden for my father if I expect him to pay for my tuition fee at the university,” explained Mothosela. According to Seipati Mothosele, her daughter was accepted in two institutions of higher learning in Gauteng. However, she was disadvantaged because they wanted a parent to sign a surety form for a loan to be granted to her daughter to pursue the studies of her choice. She was unable to sign the surety form because she is unemployed. She is disappointed that her situation disadvantaged her daughter. Charity Moyo, the editor of tame TIMES (Kathorus)

Happy New Year to you all, I hope you enjoyed the holidays and are ready to start a new year. I guess it was an amazing holiday for everyone, as some had travelled to different places and had spent precious time with friends, family and relatives. As we begin the journey of 2014, some have started life in a positive way - especially those who have passed matric. Well done to the class of 2013 for the outstanding performance. The township schools have at last outperformed the suburbs and town schools, with Lethukuthula Secondary School in Katlehong being the best in the Ekurhuleni South District. I encourage those who have passed matric and did not get a place at a university to consider Further Education and Training Colleges for skills development and training experiences. Those who are experiencing financial challenges should also consider non-paying skills training centres and colleges and to apply for bursaries. Every year people have their New Year’s resolutions, but the question is do they stick to them. We have to try to be honest with ourselves and make the resolutions that we are able to live with. People have to make sure that they change the things they did wrong last year as part of their resolutions, in

order not to repeat the same mistakes.Lastly, we have three sections in our newspaper: motoring, divas and cooking. We would like to encourage interested readers who want to feature their cars, become tame TIMES divas or want to share their recipes to contact our editorial team. Let’s meet again in our next edition. You can also join me on tame TIMES KTV Facebook page / twitter: at @moyo_charity / linkedin: za.linkedin.com\pub\charity-moyo / www.tametimes.co.za. Cheers for now.

Welcome 2014

Tiisetsong Secondary School’s class of 2013’s matric learners’ persistence helped them to live up to their school name, perseverance, when they surpassed their predecessors’ matric pass rate in their 2013 matric examination. According to school Principal Kensani Mkhondo, their class of 2013’s top learner obtained higher results compared to their 2012 top learner. “This shows that there is slight improvement in our learners’ pass rate this year. Our 2013 top learner is Katleho Mahlaba. The youngster obtained five distinctions in Economics, Business Studies, Accounting, Life Orientation and Mathematics. Nontsikelelo Hoboyi was our second top learner. She obtained four distinctions in Business Studies, Accounting, Life Orientation and South Sotho. Our 2012 top learner was Morakala, who also obtained four distinctions,” said Mkhondo. He congratulated the teachers for the job well done in 2013. Mkhondo also wished the learners who have passed their matric well and urged those who failed to try again this year. Katleho Mahlaba attributed his success to the hard work done at the beginning of the year. He will be studying an Actuarial Science Degree at Wits University this year.“I would like to urge all the pupils who have

failed Grade 12 to never give up on their studies. They should work hard towards their studies from the beginning of the year until they sit for their final examination. They shouldn’t give up their dreams, but enrol at a college or write their supplementary exams early this year,” concluded Mahlaba.

Landulwazi Comprehensive school in Thokoza is delighted with the 13,38% increase in the 2013 matric pass rate by obtaining 72,38% compared to the 59% of 2012.Kwambewe Samuel Mdhluli, the acting principal of the school, was excited and acknowledged the support they received from the district, parents, teachers and learners during the preparations of the examinations. “We conducted extra classes; the teachers and the learners were committed. The 2013 matrics learners have set a trend for 2014 and we envisage an 85% pass rate this year,” said Mdhluli. The school did not obtain many distinctions but the pass mark includes access to 16 bachelors degrees, 51 diplomas, and 70 higher national certificates, and with a total number of 193 matric candidates who wrote the senior national certificate 137 passed and 56 failed. Of the learners that have failed, 49 qualify for writing the supplementary examinations in February and only 7 don’t qualify. Catherine Thelma Lopa is the top learner at the

school with one distinction in Life Orientation. “Lopa’s results are excellent. Even though she did not get a lot of distinctions, she is a star,” said Mdhluli. Lerato Faith Dyonase from Thokoza, raised by a single parent residing in the backyard of a

relative’s house, is also another top 10 learner at

the school with also one distinction in Life Orientation.

Dyonase is going to pursue a career in teaching at the University of Johannesburg. She said, “I worked hard and knew that l was

going to pass, but the fear was that l was not going to achieve the results l

envisaged. I expected to do better than this but l am also grateful that l made

it despite my underprivileged background.”

“The lack of consistency and commitment from both learners and teachers were the reason that led to the drop of the Thoko Thaba Secondary School matric pass rate from 80% in 2012 to 70% in 2013,” said the principal, Gcina Makhathini.“There was a little bit of inconsistency in terms of late coming to school and lack of commitment from learners and teachers last year. We intend to improve in such areas and in the subjects that the learners did not perform well in. We envisage a 90% pass mark for the 2014 matric class and we are working towards achieving it,” said Makhathini. The school had a total number of 117 learners passing their matric and 52 learners failing the national senior certificate. Qenehelo Victor Motsoeneng from Unit F in Thokoza is the

top matric learner at the school with five distinctions in Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Orientation, Geography and Sesotho home language. He is going to pursue a career in mechanical engineering at the University of Wits. Speaking to tame TIMES, Motsoeneng said, “It is all because of my hard work and dedication. We were prepared for the examinations. Immediately after writing Grade 11 examinations we started revising for matric. I encourage the 2014 matrics to follow our footsteps and for them to achieve best results.”

Cooking is one way people express themselves. There is some form of satisfaction in creating something with your own hands. It is even more exceptional when it is baking, because we usually buy baked foods. In this section, for the New Year we’re sharing a banana loaf recipe, which is simple to prepare. During this rainy season, when the weather gets a bit chilly, you can make your own banana loaf and enjoy it alongside a cup of tea or coffee.

Banana Loaf Recipe

- Heat oven to 180 degrees Celsius- Grease and line the base of a 1kg loaf tin- Mix the flour, soda and salt together- Cream the butter and sugar until it is pale and fluffy- Add the eggs a little at a time alternatively with the flour- Stir in the remaining flour and bananas - Put the mixture in the baking tin- Bake for about 1½ hours- When done, take tin out of the oven and leave it to cool outside for about 15 minutes- Ready to be served- It can be served with custard or as it is, without any additions, and can be taken with tea or coffee

- 225g self-raising flour- 1/4 teaspoon of bicarbonate soda- A pinch of salt- 75g butter- 175g caster sugar- 2 eggs which are beaten- 450g of bananas weighed, peeled and mashed

Thokoza-based Kgomotso ‘Caster Junior’ Khechane had a hectic schedule during the festive season, competing in various athletics competitions. Speaking to tame TIMES, the athletic sensation was excited

that she amassed four athletics awards during this period.“On November 30, I took part in the 10km Street Mile Marathon held at Thembisa. I came first in the ladies under 19-20 category. As if that was not enough, on 5 December, I competed in the World Aids Day 5km race held at Huntersfield Stadium in Katlehong. Due to an injury attained in the previous race held in Thembisa a few days before, it was uncomfortable for me to showcase my best during the race. I obtained position five in that race, which was not bad for an athlete that was limping,” said Kgomotso. The tenacious young athlete further took part in the Street Mile Championship 1500m and 200m race, both held in Thembisa. She obtained position one in the 1500m in the under 22 category. Caster Junior put the cherry on top when she obtained 3rd position in the 200m race later on the same day. Her five star performances earned her two awards in both races. “I’ve just passed matric, which presented me with the opportunity to further my Sports Management Diploma at Vaal Technikon this year. I want to be knowledgeable in sports because it is the career of my choice,” said Kgomotso. Ward 57 councillor Tisetso Nketle said she wants to play a part in helping Kgomotso succeed in her athletics career. “I will be speaking to MMC of Sports, Arts and Culture in Ekurhuleni and the Madam Speaker of Ekurhuleni Metro on how we could help her in advancing a career. I promise to work hard in securing her a bursary to pursue a career in sports,” concluded Nketle.

“Hundreds of Kathorus aspiring soccer players continue to hone their football skills, but their hard labour doesn’t bear positive fruits because they are often being ignored by soccer scouts,” said Tsunami Football Club coach Sabelo “Bharaza” Nkosi. He said townships such as Soweto, Thembisa and Daveyton are often visited by soccer scouts. Nkosi said players from those areas got selected to play for leading soccer teams and their careers are flourishing. “However, if Kathorus scouts continue to shun untapped talent from the area, they leave aspiring stars seeking respite in alcohol and drugs.“ “Kadi Mosadi was the last soccer star who was discovered in Kathorus Township in 2011. He is now competing in the ABSA Premiership for Amatuks FC and we are proud that he is a young rising soccer star coming from the neighbourhood. Football fans are aware that Kathorus is capable of producing good football stars,” said Nkosi. He said Thabiso “Sjeke” Mabope and

Sbusiso Buthelezi are some of the promising stars who are capable of playing in the Absa Premiership League. Nkosi said some of the best local soccer players ever come from Kathorus, including former Kaizer Chiefs midfield genius Jabulani Mendu, current Mamelodi Sundowns player Sibusiso Khumalo and Polokwane FC player Kagiso Sinamela. “We have three of the best soccer tournaments held regularly in Kathorus, which we would like soccer scouts to attend. The Charles Tournament held in April at Thokoza Extension Two soccer grounds, Mboro Tournament held in June at Samhlolo Grounds in Katlehong and Chris Hani Mall Soccer Tournament held in December at Lesedi Soccer Grounds in Vosloorus are some of the biggest tournaments in Kathorus. Some of the best football stars once participated in these football tournaments and are now campaigning in leading local soccer leagues,” concluded Nkosi.
