What We Already Know ´ Our classes are challenging
´ Disruptions are frequent
´ Motivation is low
´ Engagement is challenging
´ Our Students are Diverse ´ Learning Styles
´ Backgrounds
´ Level of Current Understanding
´ Our Outcomes Are Evaluated Regardless of Our Resources ´ Parent’s send us what they’ve got! They are
not keeping all the good ones at home!
But…
…we still go to school everyday to make a difference!
As professionals, we must strengthen our armor and build up our educator toolkits with superpower strategies that help us meet and defeat these challenges! We really are lifesavers!
What We Really Need
´ To see value in our work
´ To believe student success is our standard and responsibility
´ To obtain real tools that help and not just more “Jelly-of-the-Month Club” initiatives
´ We need proven strategies that work!
We need these because…
“…every child deserves a champion - an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best they can possibly be.”
Rita Pearson Ed.D. 1951-2013
We all have our champions! Our students do, too!
Beliefs 1. All students are
different
2. Engagement and motivational strategies need to reach across learning styles and intelligences
3. Teach content in the best way students learn
4. Engagement and motivation strategies can be used with all learners
5. Use them in often
6. We need to differentiate learning and instruction
7. Not all students learn the same way or at the same time (Teachers, too!)
8. Students have different modalities of learning
9. Depth of knowledge is as important as breadth of knowledge
10. Reasonable amounts of pressure is needed for peak performance
Components
1. Promoting Positive Feelings
2. Promoting Attention/Interest
3. Promoting Connectedness/Relevance
4. Promoting Self-Efficacy
5. Sharing Best Practices – Matrix Planning
Strategies that work!

Session Wrap-Up
Putting Your Tools to Use
´ Model Often, Model Well
´ Tweak for Your Students’ Learning and Your Teaching
´ Build Your Toolkit Inventory
´ “I’m still learning!”
´ Seek Help – Give Help
´ Be part of the matrix!
Caution… ´ You can’t do every
strategy with every class
´ You can’t do them all at once
´ You can’t “overuse” them to the point they have no “spark” with the students
´ You can’t do these if you’re students don’t see YOUR spark!
Reminder… You may have hundreds or even thousands of students over the years, but each of those students will only have ONE of you! You may not remember all of them, but most of them will vividly remember YOU!
