#16 KEVIN CASH, MANAGER

TONIGHT’S STARTER: RH NATHAN EOVALDI (3-4, 4.59 ERA)

LAST START—On Fri at MIN, lasted 2.2 IP, his shortest start since Aug 10, 2016 at BOS (1 IP, injury) and shortest non-injury start since June 16, 2015 at MIA (0.2 IP)…yielded season highs in hits (9), runs (8) and earned runs (8), and tied a season high with 2 BB…his 9 hits were his most since June 8, 2016 vs. LAA (10) and his 8 runs were his most since June 16, 2015 at MIA (8)…yielded 4 runs on 6 hits in the 1st in-ning, the second time in his career he allowed at least 6 hits in a single frame, and 4 runs on 3 hits and 1 BB in the 3rd inning, including a 3-run homer to Joe Mauer, his last batter faced…his line: L, 2.2 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 2 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR, 65 pit, 45 str.

Ê Was the fourth time in club history a starter yielded at least 9 hits and 8 runs and failed to finish 3 IP, following Alex Cobb on Aug 18, 2012 at LAA, Rob Bell on April 18, 2015 at NYY and Bryan Rekar on May 17, 2000 at TEX.

THE LONG BALL—Thirteen of his 26 runs allowed (50.0 pct.) have scored via the home run…eight of his 10 HR allowed have come with the bases empty, the only ex-ceptions coming on June 10 vs. SEA (Mike Zunino, 2-run) and Fri at MIN (Joe Mauer, 3-run)…his 1.76 HR/9 IP ratio would be 3rd-highest in the AL if he qualified—only KC Jakob Junis (2.12) and TEX Bartolo Colon (1.86) are higher among qualifiers.

Ê Has allowed at least 1 HR in six of his 9 starts…hasn’t allowed multiple homers since June 20 at HOU, when he yielded a career-high-tying 4 HR including back-to-back-to-back homers in the 6th inning.

WELCOME HOME—Only two of his 9 starts this season (22.2 pct.) have come at Tropicana Field, lowest pct. in the majors among pitchers with as many starts—clos-est is WAS Jeremy Hellickson (30.8 pct.)…is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA (11-IP, 3-ER) in 2 starts at home, and last pitched here on June 26 vs. WAS, when he outdueled Max Scherzer and had his no-hitter broken up after 5.2 IP by Bryce Harper’s double.

HARD TO HIT—Has made 3 starts this season of 6 IP (or more) and 1 hit (or fewer), most in the AL and tied with PIT Trevor Williams (3) for most in the majors…for context, he has done that three times in 9 starts with the Rays, compared to twice in 127 starts from 2011-16 with the Dodgers, Marlins and Yankees…his 3 starts of this type are tied for the most by a Ray in a single season in club history, joining Jake Odorizzi in 2014 and 2017…on July 8 at NYM, he retired his first 18 BF to tie for the 2nd-longest perfect game bid in franchise history, behind Chris Archer (6.1 IP) on July 29, 2015 vs. DET.

IN COMMAND—Min. 5 starts, his 1.41 BB/9 IP ratio ranks 2nd in the AL and 3rd in the majors, behind CLE Corey Kluber (1.14) and LAD Ross Stripling (1.32), and his 5.63 SO/BB ratio ranks 4th in the AL and 5th in the majors…min. 50 IP, his 0.98 WHIP ranks 4th in the AL and 7th in the majors…excluding openers, his 7 starts of 1 BB or fewer are the most on the team, ahead of Chris Archer and Blake Snell (6), and his 3 starts of 0 BB are tied with Snell for the team lead—and he has achieved this despite starting the season on the 60-day DL…has allowed 2 BB or fewer in 14 consecutive starts dating back to July 19, 2016, one shy of matching the longest such streak of his career (15, July 4–Sep 21, 2014).

vs. MIAMI—Has made 2 starts against the Marlins, including earlier this month when he allowed a 2nd-inning RBI double to Miguel Rojas and 5th-inning solo homer to J.T. Realmuto, but took no decision after the Rays tied it in the 9th inning…also pitched against them on June 16, 2015 at MIA (with NYY), and he allowed 9 hits and 8 R/ER in 0.2 IP…spent parts of three seasons with the Marlins, going 13-27 with a 4.10 ERA (369-IP, 168-ER) in 63 starts.

Ê Is 5-9 with a 5.16 ERA (125.2-IP, 72-ER) in 23 career interleague starts, including 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA (24-IP, 6-ER) in 4 starts this season.
